Synopsis

For the agent known as "Twilight," no order is too tall if it is for the sake of peace. Operating as Westalis' master spy, Twilight works tirelessly to prevent extremists from sparking a war with neighboring country Ostania. For his latest mission, he must investigate Ostanian politician Donovan Desmond by infiltrating his son's school: the prestigious Eden Academy. Thus, the agent faces the most difficult task of his career: get married, have a child, and play family.

Twilight, or "Loid Forger," quickly adopts the unassuming orphan Anya to play the role of a six-year-old daughter and prospective Eden Academy student. For a wife, he comes across Yor Briar, an absent-minded office worker who needs a pretend partner of her own to impress her friends. However, Loid is not the only one with a hidden nature. Yor moonlights as the lethal assassin "Thorn Princess." For her, marrying Loid creates the perfect cover. Meanwhile, Anya is not the ordinary girl she appears to be; she is an esper, the product of secret experiments that allow her to read minds. Although she uncovers their true identities, Anya is thrilled that her new parents are cool secret agents! She would never tell them, of course. That would ruin the fun.

Under the guise of "The Forgers," the spy, the assassin, and the esper must act as a family while carrying out their own agendas. Although these liars and misfits are only playing parts, they soon find that family is about far more than blood relations.

Background

Spy x Family ranked first in the 2020 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division. It was nominated for the 13th Manga Taisho Award in 2020 and placed second in the final ranking. In the same year, it was also nominated for the 44th Kodansha Manga Award in the Shounen category. In 2021, the manga was nominated for the 14th Manga Taisho Award and placed 10th in the final ranking. In 2023, it won the Grand Prize in the Comic Division at the 52nd Japan Cartoonists Association Awards.

The series has been simulpub in English through MANGA Plus. It has been published physically in English by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint since June 2, 2020. The manga has also been released in Polish by Waneko since April 30, 2020; in Spanish by Editorial Ivrea since June 11, 2020; in Brazilian Portuguese and Italian by Panini Comics since September 15, 2020, and November 5, 2020, respectively; and in German by Kazé Deutschland since October 1, 2020.

An interesting take on Mr. & Mrs. Smith-style stories. The daughter, Anya, is the one who really drives the story. Her interactions with the cast are a delight to watch, and I always look forward to how she will nudge those around her into performing actions. She really is a child puppetmaster.

The "father" and "mother" are also superb, and make wonderful tsunderes. They are also quite competent.

I really enjoy how even mundane activities are transformed into amazing action spectacles. The authors are really good at writing and drawing action sequences.

In sum, this manga has a great mix of action, romance, comedy, and family themes. I ...

There is so much hype surrounding the anime from episode one that, when I didn't get it, I turned to the manga.
