Watching An Anime Alphabet #2 (8/20/2023 - 1/24/2024)

Deciding to do this again, an attempt to watch an "anime alphabet". Feel free to use this, as well as my other stacks, as "viewing challenges" (just switch out shows you've already seen with other things, or do your own unique set of anime). I very much prefer the Interest Stacks format that MAL has now, so will be using that for anime blogging like this from now on. The 2014 attempt was started due to difficulty in making a decision on what to watch, but now, it's being done as a motivation to work on my ever growing PTW list, as well as to explore the annals of the PTW in general. Also to motivate myself to watch more normal length anime, I easily get in the habit of primarily watching extremely long shows.
I will be doing it differently this time though, last time I burned out since I limited myself just to the challenge. So here are the rules:
1. A - Z in alphabetical order (no bouncing around the alphabet).
2. I'm not limited to doing just this challenge, I'll be watching other anime alongside this challenge.
3. I can skip a letter if desired, especially if it's something with very limited options (like X).
4. Will only be picking stuff that I can easily watch the full thing of in a reasonable amount of time, so like, single season shows, OVAs, stuff with short episodes, you know the drill. The 2014 had multiple multi-season shows and it made it needlessly harder on me.
5. Using the Japanese names or what is the primary name displayed on MAL.
6. Dates provided are dates finished.
7. I'm not locked into shows, I can drop or put a show on hold and choose something else for the letter if desired.
I'll also be including some little thoughts. MAL itself tracks the scores here, so I'll update per post (starting at entry #5 [E]).

Fairly recent entry to my PTW, was trying to find more anime with a medical theme/hospital setting; always liked that setting but is kind of rare (which I feel is also something that contributes to it being such a cool setting). Anyways, fun short-episode comedy anime analyzing mental disorders and tons of info-dumps. A lot of it revolved around sex related disorders and such, so it reminded me A LOT of Hen Zemi (which is amazing btw, go watch it).

B for Binbougami ga!
An excellent example of why I do challenges like this, this show has been sitting in my PTW for seriously a decade or more, and I finally watched it, and loved it too. I remember finding this show in a MAL thread about flat-chested anime girls, which is reason enough to watch it. The show was a lot of fun, and I strongly feel that early 2010s shows like this are super underrated, loved the comedy, characters, parody references, and ecchi. Reminded me of stuff like Jashin-chan Dropkick, but if it was made in 2012 and mixed with shows like Haiyore! Nyaruko-san and Ebiten; very fun watch for fans of this kind of thing~!

C for Coppelion
Another show that was on my PTW list for far too long. Added this to my PTW back when it started airing all the way back in 2013. I've always loved how Japanese media approaches post-apocalyptic/dystopian themes, and this show is no exception. The show was so visually stimulating to look at, beautifully done settings, and loved the way the characters looked; the character art reminded me a lot of Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls. Really nice show though, nice mix of drama, action, and atmosphere. Also, Kanon Ozu is INSANELY HOT, DAMN. Not sure what I'll pick yet for D, and is possible I watch some other shows for a bit, only time will tell~

D for Dragon Half
Although I do love early 2010s anime, was time to mix it up with an early 90s OVA. Pretty quick watch considering it's just two episodes. Fun little fantasy OVA, reminded me of other 90s fantasy gag anime like Slayers, Capricorn, and others. Didn't expect this to be one of those old fantasy anime that have some sci-fi stuff mixed in, so that was cool. Also, dang, this anime made me realize how less common chibis are in modern anime.

Finally watched this show, I remember it being absurdly popular back when it came out. It's been on my radar since then but never got around to watching it, and finally did. Pretty standard school club anime but really well done with a lot of amazing visuals, pretty stimulating show. Also, really nice OST too, wish the composer did more anime OSTs, they have a unique sound. ALSO, FIELD RECORDING GIRL, BASED~!!!

F for First Squad: The Moment of Truth
Well, that sucked. Sadly they can't all be winners, this is the first loser of the challenge. Decided to mix it up with both a historical anime and a movie, so finally got around to watching this. It's [b]extremely loosely[/b] "based" on a real life Russian girl who fought the nazis, but sadly, for a movie about a bad-ass loli killing nazis with a sword, there was barely any bad-ass loli killing nazis with a sword. Instead was just an hour of bland filler for a crappy fight scene at the end.
Since this anime sucked, if you're following along this challenge with me, or doing it after I've finished, I strongly suggest picking something else. I recommend using one of these short/shortish anime for this challenge instead:

G for Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Took a bit longer to finish this one due to also playing games and working on music, but was a cute show. After the awful F anime (press F), decided to play it safe with something that's commonly highly rated (this show used to be quite popular back when it came out). Was a fun watch, been a long time since I last watched a shoujo romcom, and was a pretty good one. Also, I spotted a noise album cover in this, so that's humorous. I also watched the six specials.

Finally watched this show, I was extremely excited about it when it got announced and finally got around to watching it. I love fishing stuff, especially with anime girls, and this show did not disappoint, absolutely phenomenal SOL, first 10/10 in this challenge. Really loved this show, sad it's over.

I for Ikoku Meiro no Croisée The Animation
Wow, this show absolutely blew me away, phenomenal SOL. REALLY reminded me of shows like Aria, which is one of my favorite anime, so I really enjoyed this. Also, after finishing Kaze no Naka no Shoujo: Kinpatsu no Jeanie earlier this year I've been itching to watch another historical anime, and this certainly hit the spot, another 10/10. I watched the main show, the OVA, and the Yune & Alice specials -- skipped the picture dramas since I tend to dislike those.

This was actually one of the first anime I ever added to my PTW. I tried watching it many times but only the dub was ever available, but finally the sub is available so finally got to watch it! Fun little adult-orientated mahou-shoujo-esque action OVA of girls based on playing cards fighting massive chess pieces. Really underrated anime, ignore the ratings/reviews, show is good.

First off, Carla (the dark elf girl) was amazing, super cute and hilarious, loved her. Second off, very fun show, the whole two characters playing off each other dynamic was a lot of fun, and I liked how both of them were equally useless in quests and the like, fun show all around. If you like stuff like Konosuba, you'll also like this.

Pretty cool sci-fi 80s horror OVA, reminded me a lot of Injuu Alien (one of my favorite anime ever); developed slowly but was quite good. I love old sci-fi OVA anime and was about time I watched one again, happy that I did.

This has been on my PTW for many years and its baffling to me how it took me this long to watch it, really awesome sci-fi fantasy 80s OVA with a cute girl who fights stuff, totally up my alley. Ignore the poor ratings this show gets, its very good, my third 10/10 in this challenge.

This thing has been in my PTW for over a decade and finally watched it, and still confused on what took me so long considering how many cute lolis it has. Really fun ultra-00s otaku OVA, simple and cute, enjoyed it quite a bit. Also third painfully underrated anime in a row, always amazes me how many good shows on here have awful ratings.

Yet another great anime with awful ratings here on MAL. Very cute short episode show with a very cute miko goddess loli. Sometimes these short episode shows feel derpy but this felt like a full-fledged anime, just compacted into 3-minute bites, really nicely done.

Finally back at it, was taking a break from anime for awhile due to burnout. Since it's spooky season and I wanted something quick to come back with decided to watch this one episode horror OVA, Psycho Diver. Was pretty decent, cool mix of sci-fi, cults, and idol stuff.

R for Rio: Rainbow Gate!
Well, that was something. Sadly a mediocre show, had potential though. I liked the casino resort setting, stood out a lot, especially with the "glitz and glamour" approach to gambling anime. That said, show felt confused on what it wanted to be and I wished it had more actual gambling. I didn't bother watching the special for this.

S for Sei Shoujo Sentai Lakers EX
It's not a Himeko list without a pinku. Fun mahou shoujo sci-fi theme, but overall was just way too tame, in both the hentai and the action. Great soundtrack though.

Finally watched this, been on my PTW since it came out. I watched both the short OVA (the one listed here) as well as the later (and much longer) alternate version OVA. As per rules of this challenge I linked to the original release, I enjoyed both but preferred the longer one (giving it a 10 even, but only counting the original's score here). Also, reminded me A LOT of Mahoutsukai no Yome.

I remember when this came out some friends recommending me it based on the pee content, still baffled it took me this long to watch it considering that. Cute and funny show with mid-length episodes, was a fun watch, lots of lewd humor and such. Also, end of the challenge is in sight, it's been fun but kinda want to get it over with now lol

I'm back, got burnt out on anime for awhile, but I'm back to watching/this challenge. Finally finished this show, I started it back before the burnout occurred. Anyways, the show was fine, bootleg Strike Witches. I liked the beginning and end but it dragged in the middle, overall was decent though.

W for Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!
This show has been recommended to me by several friends over the years due to the extreme amounts of cute lolicontent, and it did not disappoint. Very cute SOL with some comedic moments, really enjoyed it. I also watched the special and the movie (the movie was amazing btw, really reminded me of the Non Non Biyori movie).

Z for Zettai Junpaku♡Mahou Shoujo
More of a promotional animation than a proper anime but was decently cool for what it was, really wish it were a longer proper OVA, since it seemed like a cool concept. Also, with that, the challenge is now complete! I'm happy to have taken this challenge up again, finally beating it after all of these years. It was a fun journey through my massive PTW and it was fun to re-explore it all again. It rekindled my interest in a lot of PTW shows as well -- it was often hard to pick what to watch, even with the heavy limitations. I do have another challenge idea that I may do, but likely not now since I want to watch stuff more freely again, but for the time spent doing this, it worked quite well for me. With that, the challenge and this blog is now over, God bless.
