There's no risk. You can create a Linux live CD and boot from it just to test it out to see if you like it...without modifying your system, at all. If you don't like it, take the disc out, reboot, and you're right back into Windows as though nothing happened.

The only thing you'll want ot bear in mind if you do that though, is that Linux is going to run a lot slower than it's capable of, if you're running it from a CD. It's because the CD needs to constantly spin up while you're using the OS. Trying it out this way is best for figuring out if you like the interface, as opposed to testing the performance.

If you're worried about losing your visual novels when switching to linux, trust me...Virtual Box is the answer! I run Windows XP in a VB on my Linux system, and all I do with it is just play VNs. Any VN I want works just fine, that way :)

I have only been using it for a week, but as a windows user for 15 years, I cannot praise Linux and Xubuntu enough. It's like night and day -- the system resources are used much more efficiently, EVERYTHING happens significantly faster, no need for an antivirus to eat up performance, no disk checking, no defraging, no constant program crashes, ultimate customizability...it's fantastic! I wiped windows entirely off my main computer and replaced it with Linux. The windowed GUI interface is also pretty easy to figure out for anybody who has some knowledge of Windows itself, and a little aptitude.

As far as compatability, nearly every type of program a normal user would need has a Linux equivalent, and they're extremely easy to find. Ubuntu has an integrated function that brings up an app manager, where you can easily peruse any program in their database and download what you need with no hunting around the net for it. There is also a program called Wine, which is used to run windows binaries. I've had plenty of success with that. I'm currently working on setting up WindowsXP as a virtual box running inside my linux. That way, there's no Windows presence on my computer save for when I want to run a more obscure windows binary (a visual novel, for example).

I don't intend to look back :D

Seems we've all gotten some more time for the computer, heh. I recently started using xubuntu linux on my computer rather than windows, and I tell ya, I'm sold. No more Microsoft for me. I guess maybe that's why I'm back to actually using my computer so much, again.

Err...sorry it took me, what, three months, to re-accept your friend request? I've been on hiatus. I now have a computer that my wife won't be usurping to appease her need for Facebook though, so I should be back on more often :)

Don't know what happened to the lists, either. Seems I lose several people on my friends list. Oh well.

I'm interested in Gekkou no Carnevale too, I like the arts. But there is nobody on a translation currently.

Yeah the song is nice, I can't wait to play it.

Heh, that's pretty cool. It's always nice when school assignments result in interesting ideas like that. Sometimes I wonder if short stories would be easier if I simply made up an assignment for myself and see what happens.

Just read it. That was surprisingly clever! For something so short, I definitely enjoyed it :D
_eternal Jul 27, 2010 10:23 AM
Cool, I wouldn't mind. Let me know when you post it.
_eternal Jul 27, 2010 9:57 AM
Haha, funny how that happens. Well, problem solved :P

Hmm... must have been tough to go that long without internet, though I guess that's a helpful way to focus on school. Sounds like you're doing a lot of extracurricular stuff as well. Are you going to college? I'm starting uni this Fall (focusing on English), so school will start occupying some time, but it shouldn't be too bad. Most of the stuff I do outside of academics is anime-related, and I'm mostly content with just going to class and doing my work, although I might want to get involved with a school newspaper or something. Of course it's far more likely that I'll join the anime club~
