oh goodness, where do i begin?
well, to start out, erased is the perfect medley of time travel and murder mystery. it is the story of satoru gaining real, strong emotional connections in both the past and present, which allows the story to expertly connect his future and his past. his heartbreaking repeated failures in trying to save kayo and his mother serve a purpose not only narratively but thematically: to slowly turn him into the kind of person who is capable of saving both his mother and kayo as well as loners like himself.
as a mystery, the show is very well built. there are
...
real stakes and danger, which is largely due to the anime's villain. while satoru may be a child, he has the knowledge of the future and how the killer will progress with his murders. the killer is always one step ahead of satoru, even when he changes the past again and again. the killer is an absolute genius: when he tries to drown satoru, he leaves town; to keep himself safe, yes, but also to reward satoru for catching him time and time again. but in the end, this is what leads to the killer's downfall - when satoru survives the drowning, the killer finds it unfair to kill a comatose satoru, who by living has beaten him once again. the killer's identity can be identified with different clues throughout the story, which can make satoru's obliviousness more annoying than it should be.
satoru's goal is to bring about the opposite timeline: from a timeline where lives are ruined, satoru's emotional growth is halted, and a killer is left to run free, to a timeline where he prevents kayo's death and the killer's other victims and in turn ends up in a coma. but with his sacrifice, kayo and his friends are left to grow up and have happy lives without a serial killer following them. this, to satoru, is all worth it.
overall, this has to be one of my absolute favorite anime. it's thematically deep with great characters, and just left me with a smile on my face.

i watched the entire season the day it came out. meaning, i dedicated an entire day watching this season - that's how much anticipation i had built up for this season.
and it was worth it; for the most part, at least.
after i watched this season, i began reading the manga. and though i knew this season went in a completely different direction of the manga, i still found it enjoyable. not as good as the first season, but still enjoyable.
it still has those moments (there's no shortage- trust me) where you question kei's choices, so i'm glad they kept the same vibe.
i'm not giving
...
this a higher score because one: it doesn't follow the manga *at all,* which at this point i really wish it had, because it would have just made more sense instead of adding a bunch of filler. and two: not leaving me on a fucking cliffhanger.
it was honestly just as good as the first season.

black butler is BY FAR one of my favorite anime of all time. i absolutely love the concept of demons/grim reapers and a child taking over as the earl of his family's estate. i love the time setting of victorian era england where earls and nobles make up the majority of the monarchy. but trust me- that's not the only thing that has brought be back to this series so many times.
black butler may just be the most well-written anime series i've seen. it doesn't have the lazy, shortcut type of writing that's just there to fill in the gaps, rather, it builds different stories
...
that supports different themes but ultimately leads up to the same goal: to find the people who killed ciel's parents.
the themes of revenge and redemption are knitted together so perfectly with yana toboso's well-crafted storylines. though this isn't an anime with nonstop action, it has its share of dark battle scenes but also with dark, witty, humorous battle scenes. it has quite a bit of dark humor, but also a unique sense of humor throughout the series that never fails to make me laugh.
overall, this anime never fails to bring a smile to my face or tears to my eyes with its shocking scenes and backstory, or its dark humor. if you don't think you'll like it after watching the first episode, KEEP WATCHING! it breaks off from the manga around episode 15 or so, but it's still good after that.

before i start, let me tell you: do NOT let the animation fool you. yes, i know, it's pretty bad, but don't judge a book by its cover.
ajin comes in at a close second or third in my top favorite anime of all time, right below death note and tokyo ghoul. now ajin's plot is VERY similar to tokyo ghoul's, but keep in mind that i watched ajin before tokyo ghoul.
now on to the actual review: ajin is a dark, violent, psychological, edge-of-your-seat tale that is rarely subtle about giving a negative view on human nature and society. this negative view doesn't exclude the
...
main protagonist kei nagai either. while he may seem considerate and helpful at times, he's actually an emotionless little bitch.
in comparison to TG, i'd say there's a fine line where you would compare the two, which is where the ajin and ghouls' immortality come into play. in ajin, ajin are completely immortal. in TG, ghouls can be killed by quinques and sometimes another ghoul's kagune if they try hard enough. both shows have the same idea in the plot and focus on humanity itself, but they do have their differences.
overall, this is one of my favorite anime. watch it if you like tokyo ghoul.

death note is my favorite anime of all time. and to some that may seem like a stretch, but it shows us the vulnerability of humanity and our psyche in and of itself. it's one of those anime where it makes you /think/ and honestly just really messes with your head.
death note tells the story of a young man who looked at the world, saw its many flaws, and said, "i'm gonna change it with this convenient thing that i found called the death note," and light yagami is the perfect example of a road to hell paved with good intentions.
and though he's considered
...
to be a villain by many (including myself), going against L in the epic battle of good vs evil, he was a pretty idealistic person, shocked by the corruption of the world and was given a chance to do something about them- he had good intentions at first.
but what he failed to realize was that he was just as fucked up as everyone else; killing all the "bad" people makes you a "bad" person: a killer.
now on the other hand, my personal favorite character of all time, L, followed the rules of what is considered right by society, but just like light, he was also flawed. he distanced himself from other human beings just by being smarter than most, and i guess you could consider him as being unhappy because of this.
many see L as the main hero of the story, including myself, but in reality, he was actually really isolated.
both light and L wanted a better world, and they were brought together by this. but they were both miserable and lonely and honestly they should have been friends, but they couldn't because of how the world isolates us as individuals and tells us our way of doing things is always right.
overall, death note is beautiful because is asks you the question: if you were given the change to change the world for the better, would you?
