both are truly surreal horror stories of children drawn into psychotic events involving strangenesses which could only be drawn out of a fever dream.......both manga share a similarly sketchy, impressionistic, and very personal style of art.....and i recommend both.........

both tales of ancient times in the far east........both feature talking animals who provide most of the comedy.....both are early examples of asian animation cinema - princess iron fan was the first feature length animation film produced in china (1941) and anju to zushiomaru was produced by toei in japan (1961)........those interested in early animation history should definitely check both out!

both are great yuri manga by torajiro kishi about the lives of high school girls and the (somewhat) innocent sexual situations they get in to - both also have amazing and beautiful art...

If you liked Gegege no Kitarou (1968) add

both of these series were made at the very end of the classic black and white era of anime (dororo to hyakkimaru was actually the last one made in black and white) - both are atmospheric, ahead of their time, and have dark themes including demons and yokai - both were originally from grandmasters of manga (dororo by osamu tezuka and gegege no kitaro by shigeru mizuki) - and both are great!

Both are stories about the impermanence of love and friendship in this life, but also about the feeling that it is better to love and then lose because our memories of those time are eternal, or at least 'til we, too, pass on - both give a warm feeling of summertime and the bittersweet feelings of its passing...

both of these truly amazing pieces of art deal with the danger that comes with messing with unmei (fate) and the beauty and fragility of the moment that is now - we must learn to appreciate what we have while we have it, to appreciate ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) which is impermanence - both also made me cry and laugh a lot - if your looking for truly transcendent anime, look no further!!!

both series have a soft almost watercolor style of art, dark atmospheres, beautiful sad and melancholy female leads, and strange and obsessed male leads. both are about death and all the strange feelings that surround it. both are very enjoyable if you're happiest when it rains...

both feature beautiful delicate art - both are about beautiful beings kept in cages - both feature a similar mood of longing and sadness, lost love...

If you liked Yuutai Nova add

by the same mangaka - also about the frustrations of love/loneliness, etc. oshimi-san is really good at questioning the nature of reality/morality/love - check this out - excellent!!!

If you liked Summer Wars add

...then you might like Eve no Jikan (Movie) add

these two movies have very different plots, but they gave me a very similar feeling of warmth - both show the importance of being surrounded by a family of those you love, whether they be related or not. in eve no jikan the main character finds a sort of family at the eve no jikan cafe, where he learns you can be human or android, but the emotion of caring for others is still the same. similarly, in summer wars, the main character is thrust into a family of strange "others" (someone else's family), but he finds love all the same. two of my favorite films (anime or otherwise) of all time!
