We also disagree about how to rate a show, which is why I sort of understand why you tried "calling me out". But before going into that, I'd like to make one thing clear: I did not enjoy Promare. To me, unless I'm invested in the character, I don't care much for the animation at all. It can the best work of art, yet I'd still not care. It's somewhat self-aware, but it doesn't do anything with it. When you spend large chunk of time with each exposition of the world, detailing every plot twist and character motivation, I don't think it should be excused because they spent a lot of time on the action. If a show's going to focus on the action, it shouldn't try to make fantastical racism stories that push so far that they justify the final antagonist's motivations. Because it ruins what could've been enjoyable schlock. My problem with Promare is that it tried to have a "deep" plotline, when it could've just been the tried and true teamwork schlock.
There are gold standards for every art-form(Show don't tell), and just because they exist, that doesn't mean people base their enjoyments off of them. Like as you point out, even animation can have quality to it. Promare's a great example of 3DCG being well executed. Contrast that with Berserk(2016), you can see the extreme differences, and probably point out why one succeeded Vs. another. However somebody's preferences might lead them to enjoy something like Berserk's animations.
With multiple reasons to enjoy something outside of the show itself(Not to mention that those reasons change as time passes), I do not think it is useful to base a rating of it on preference. A show is an expression of the artist, and said expression can vary in quality. Every show has some faults, like the people who make them, but they can also transcend their flaws. That doesn't mean they'll be successful, or that people will like it. But By using gold standards, you can explain why a show has certain faults, and make a more accurate score that's more based on it's merit, than the show's hype. When there's clear examples of bad shows and art, that can be the same for well written works. It's just easier to find out flaws in writing than true positives. That's my line of thought.

I don’t like Sawano’s vocal tracks that much either. There’s a lot of inane lyrics. Like hearing “Everytime you hurt yourself with knives” ruins it for me. Not to mention that the vocals are what carries those songs. This isn’t like NieR’s soundtrack where it accompanied the instrumentals nicely. It’s drum-beat, string beat, electronic patterns, repeating for what feels like 15 seconds before switching, and chorus. I don’t like him. There are way better composers out there that do the same thing he does. Like Kouhei Tanaka, Yugo Kanno, Iwatsuki. Sawano has been wasting his talents since Gigantic Formula imo.
I didn’t give anything a pass. I have them listed as favourites because I enjoyed them, not because I rated them highly. I think I have City Hunter at a solid 6 because it’s episodic schlock. I should also put Iczer 3 or Tylor up there to, despite them being okay at best.
I wasn’t looking for a superb story from Promare. I was looking for schlock, and I didn’t get it. Just because you can tell what route Trigger goes down doesn’t mean it’s not the same convoluted story-telling that’s present in their previous works to. It’s grating. I’d rather them have had a dumb simple plot that spent more time with colourful character types interacting than expositing plot twist after infodump. City Hunter and Reconguista in G can fit in a lot of action and enjoyable moments into an hour and thirty minutes, so I don’t see Promare’s excuse.
If you read my review you should understand that I couldn’t enjoy the action because the convoluted storyline kept getting in the way. I didn’t knock Promore for the action nor the soundtrack despite my distaste for the latter. I don’t think it’s a good movie and I didn’t enjoy it in theaters. Just because you enjoyed it doesn’t mean there isn’t a group of people that disagree. I think what Imashi is good for is fun, but he has produced works that combine fun with good storytelling. Promare isn’t either.
About Sawano: I don’t think he’s a good composer when his music has mostly been repetitive since Gigantic Formula. I cannot remember a single track in Promare besides Kakusei, and when there are loads of great composers in Japan like Kouhei Tanaka, Michiru Oshima, Akira Senju, Yugo/Yoko Kanno, Toshihiko Sasashi and Yoshino Hirano, his talents are comparatively lackluster. Though people might like his work, I have found very little reasons to.
