It was a nice concept. I'm always a sucker for closet-case stories, but what was interesting was that she had a lover before that. Although, I find it hard to believe the her in the past was the same as the her in the present. They seemed like two different people with two different lives; it didn't mesh together properly. But it was one of the best lesbian films I ever saw.
1. She cheated and it seemed to be acceptable.
2. The main character did not behave like a mother at all. I don't know if this was deliberate or whatever, to prove that this was something that she wasn't cut out for, but then in the end, she was fighting for the child. Trust me. But if you want to try some of the stuff I mentioned, listen to How I Loved You by the Angels of Light, and White Light from the Mouth of Infinity by Swans. They're both projects of Michael Gira's, and Swans began as a more brutal industrial/no-wave project, but it evolved into a more "folky" American gothic and post-rock style. I would also recommend the double album Swans are Dead. Though if you end up wanting some gentler recommendations, I have some...
