Haha, I'm actually quite the opposite. I didn't fall too many shows for Fall 2015, there weren't that many that appealed to me. I have a couple on my PTW but I may end up not watching them. Pretty excited for this upcoming season though, looks really promising!
Hyouka actually has no romance in it; it is strictly a mystery. In short, it is about a high school club solving a bunch of mysteries around their school and town - that's all. As for Clannad, yes, it is very moving. I can't really compare it to anything you've watched already, but *maybe* the closest thing to it would be Byousoku 5 Centimeter but even so it's a long way off. Clannad AS is better than the first season, imo. I haven't watched Nana either but I have heard good things about it. And that's good :) I think the first manga I read was One Piece but that was ages ago and I've stopped following it a long time ago.
I hope she changes too, and based on what I've seen in the first season, I think it is inevitable (after all, you know, her and Soma's father, lol).
I may get to KLK one of these days, but I already have a lot on my list that I want to go through :( I've watched Spirited Away only once, however, haha. I've had a couple problems with it plot-wise but otherwise from that it is very decent :)
Oh and btw Mahou Shoujo (which you have on hold) & Hyouka (PTW) are SUPER slow in the beginning. Like imagine a turtle, take the speed of the turtle, and multiply it by 3. That slow.
Only difference is that Mahou Shoujo does pick up in speed over the halfway point, but you do have to get over the trippy artwork and what not; Hyouka is just generally slow, but the arcs themselves are executed in an interesting way.
Thank you for your nice comment about my reviews on my profile :) and Happy New Year's to you too! And you're right, I do use the entire spectrum, but because I use the entire spectrum a lot of my ratings tend to be much harsher than most people's. If you want to standardize my ratings and consider whether a show will be tolerable for you or not, just +2 to all of my scores. If the resulting score is 5 or higher, you'll probably enjoy it based on what you mentioned; if lower than 5, probably not. Or I can give you a string of recommendations based on what you have on your list, all you got to do is ask :)
Yes, A Certain Magical Index was extremely bogged down due to the use of so many confusing terms. A lot of the arcs are pretty interesting on the whole, but whenever they spit out some weird term I'm like "Huh?" and it's really not explained ever again. Plus that and a lack of character development is why I ended up giving the show a 3. Personally I think the Railgun series spin-off is MUCH better than the Index series. There aren't as many confusing terms and when they do use convoluted terms they try to explain it using diagrams + long explanations.
Oh yeah my Shokugeki review is a little on the harsh side; I'll admit I'm a little nitpicky when it comes to criticisms, but they are criticisms nonetheless. I know I gave it a 3, but I didn't really hate the show either (as I indicate in my rubric on my profile I don't really factor in enjoyment, which I know is strange, lol). And that was exactly what I was thinking about Soma and Spice Guy too! Haha, we think alike :)
After I wrote that review, one of my friends here on MAL told me that it is common for Shounen shows (which Shokugeki is) to have huge castes of characters. (Another Shounen show that I am watching right now, Haikyuu!!, also does this.) That's something I didn't realize but I do know now, and there's nothing wrong with new characters being introduced. I think my problem with it is exactly what you indicated in that there wasn't enough main character development (minus Megumi). But what was also kind of a bummer for me was that none of the characters that were introduced really stood out to me; most of them had personalities that were (and forgive me if I offend you) a little unoriginal (since most were drawn from archetypes). And you're correct, Soma is dense and his dense nature doesn't change much, but if you want to see an EXTRA dense MC, I recommend watching Infinite Stratos (actually don't watch the show, it is bad, lol).
I am hoping S2 changes too. Even though I gave S1 just a 3, I am still going to watch S2 as the show itself, despite its flaws, is still somewhat interesting by my book.
And, yes, cheers! :)
P.S. - I see you have Great Teacher Onizuka on your PTW. The artwork is a little dated (I mean the show was released in 1999, lol) but it is an amazing piece of work - a good long-term, running plot with funny & (relatively) reasonable characters. I have high confidence that you will enjoy it very much.
