To sum it up, this anime is essentially Evangelion and FLCL combined into a cesspool of GAINAX cliches.
By no means is this OVA necessarily bad, but it feels contrived. GAINAX plots are notorious for being indecipherable, and unsurprisingly, this show's plot is overly elliptical in its pacing, pun intended. It does have a cohesive plot once you do some brainstorming, but like I said, there's hardly time for most viewers to weigh in to connect the dots. I found myself pausing time again to grasp what was happening.
I feel like there's always an effort on part of GAINAX loyalists

This film aged extremely well, in my opinion. Try watching it in HD.
Don't watch it dubbed though. I listened to about 10 minutes of the dub, laughed, and switched to sub. The story is really straightforward and easy to follow, and the premise is also really easy to pick up. The 80s action movie vibes in the film are very strong, but I think it was executed well -- nothing too cliche. It didn't feel contrived, even though you had over-the-top action sequences. Furthermore, I really liked the characters. I think it was a nice contrast to have the anti-hero being sensitive regarding children and ...

Nostalgia may blind you, but it hasn't for me. Blue Gender has a very interesting premise, and the characters are engrossing and likeable. But, everything went downhill near the end - it just didn't make sense. I mainly mean that the major twists that occurred in the latter half seemed somewhat capricious and questionable. It seemed like an evangelion-esque ending that didn't follow through.
The animation was also pretty mediocre and didn't age well. I almost didn't recognize the characters some times lol The movie also isn't worth watching as it is a compilation of scenes from the series. Nonetheless, I did enjoy it. |
