This is a message that was sent to me debating the points of my review of Devilman: Crybaby. If you guys are interested in reading it and my response below, I will share it here, because I found it to be interesting and he was the only person that took the time to explain his argument vs mine in a civil and well-thought manner.

Devilman Crybaby: A response
Hello, how are you doing?
Before I commence my civil and formal criticism of your review, I would like to state that MAL is obviously no professional ground to debate.
Now, I'm not here to attack you personally, but your interesting review, and how you dropped a 1 on the show.

On your first point you argue on the backstory, and the lack of it. The backstory which is obviously the story about God and the challenger Satan, and which pretty much anyone is familiar, and is even revised at the end of the series. If you think that the story was bad, and that it wasn't your taste, I get that.

About the rap, which I thought highly of, had you listened carefully about (maybe you did, but it also did not match your taste), the disparity between good and evil, noble or pleabian, rich or poor, reflects on the anime itself. Is there any good or evil? how do we separate them? And of course about greed, and wanting, and not getting.
Then on characters they don't hit you at all, which falls back to, you don't like the story and characters don't refclect anything on you, which is understandable. What you learned about Devilman is that he cries, which you should have picked up on the title (as you suggest as literal sarcasm, but is literal in the anime), not during watching the anime.

The last point you hit on is the animation style, in which you could not be more wrong. If you re familiar with Masaaki Yuasa, then you should understand that it is his style. Samurai Champloo, Ping Pong the animation the Shin-chan series, follow a pretty similar trait. The style. You should watch this when you have the time.

Quick about the budget, as of now it is undisclosed to the public, only between Netflix and the producers. Which still, if you look at the team, still make up many well-known animators, artists and producers. Low budget? Highly unlikely.

The last point is, "What is up with all the weird boobs? and why does Ryou get boobs in the end?", is a relation to lust. Eventhough lust is a contentious theme in demology in general, the anime itself leans towards the idea that some scholars follow, they are lustful and libidinous beings. Ryou being the ultimate incarnation of lust.

Certainly, the show was not flawless, but unquestionably does not deserve a 1, in my view that is.

Maybe I'm trying to change your mind, maybe I'm trying to understand why you hated it so much, regardless thatnks for reading my response.
Thanks, S

Hello Shinagawa-kun, I'm doing well thank you. Hope you're doing well too.

On my first point, I argued about the backstory. Yes, there was no backstory, and a content creator shouldn't assume that their audience know about the origin story of God and Satan. An artist that cares about their material will demonstrate their idea to everyone in their audience, instead of segregating the ones that aren't religious or don't care to fill the gaps in the story-line themselves. This demonstrates laziness.

About the rap, I listened to every word. The use of rapping to tell a story was excessive and at times seemed silly. Again, the audience watching this series will be segregated here since not everyone that watches this series tuned in to listen to an animated character rapping. If Netflix advertised this series as a rap-styled anime then at least everyone tuning in to watch would be interested in a story being told as a rap. However, this series was advertised as an action packed, horror, demonic, and a serious anime. The lyrics of the rap were very simple to understand as well. Adding the rapping medium to it didn't enhance its message in my experience.

Then on characters, it's not that they don't hit me. Connecting with characters requires development, which didn't exist in Devilman Crybaby. It requires the artist to tell their audience WHY they should care about the character. I shouldn't tell you how characters develop in anime. There are plenty of examples in anime on how the creator creates a connection of those characters with their audience. When I said that Devilman cries, I'm illustrating the fact that the creators of this anime did not develop this character past this character trait, which is the crying.

The last point I hit on about the animation style, which comes down to how this series was advertised. Watch the trailer for Devilman Crybaby. What do you think it's promoting? To me, it promotes action filled scenes, thriller, horror, and an interesting character. What Devilman Crybaby delivers is extreme laziness in animating the actions of its characters. If this is the style of animation for Masaaki Yuasa, then the advertisers for this series did a poor job of illustrating his style and promised something that couldn't be delivered by him.

About the budget: If this series truly had a high budget, then it should have been spent on what its advertisement promised. If you think the budget was well spent on this series then there doesn't seem to be a debate here. This point will fall to personal taste and whether or not you agree on the fact that this anime had their resources well spent.

The last point, I never said "What is up with all the weird boobs". This point will fall back to personal taste. If you think that boobs illustrate lust, then that is your interpretation. I understand the creator of this series used boobs as a means to showcase lust, and I didn't disagree with the use of female genitalia to illustrate that point. The anime did a poor job of explaining why, a male protagonist, grows boobs in the end of the series. The manga however, seemed to have done a better job of explaining why Satan has female breasts.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain your response to my review. It's OK for us to disagree, and I appreciate your civility in illustrating your points versus mine.

Great Devilman review. Can't even imagine how you managed to watch that shit of an anime till the end though.
Aromadi Jan 28, 2018 5:11 AM
Who am I baiting for exactly? Its fine if you disagree with the review, some people called Devilman (anime) a masterpiece, with no justification or explanation of how on earth did they arrive to that conclusion, which is also fine. My issue is that you think this community is attractive enough that a person would take the time to bait them.
CrimsonPique Jan 28, 2018 12:18 AM
that devilman review is definitely a troll/bait review, if not then you might need to reconsider your ability to review an anime.

Jex I don't know if you knew this, but some people have jobs and go to grad school. I don't care to update my account with all the anime I've watched and review every anime I encountered. I reviewed Devilman: Crybaby because I cared enough to create an account and write a review about it.
Jex Jan 12, 2018 6:17 AM
1 show on list, given a 1

Attack On Titan builds up and has good payoff which is what I like about it.

Akira vs Silene was very dark where you could not see what was going on. I would recommend parasyte over devilman it seems up your alley
Cyborg_Dragon Jan 9, 2018 4:36 AM
Ok what your favourite anime fam or do you have a real account?

The deal with the animation in devilman was it was hand drawn like the creators other works such as ping pong.
Cyborg_Dragon Jan 8, 2018 4:43 PM
Hey did you make a account just to give a anime a bad review LOL.

KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK, holly shit. I had already read the manga so I wasn't expecting anything amazing, but this anime managed to be worse than anything I imagined.
