Tonikaku Kawaii

Because they are both wholesome, light-hearted, romantic comedies with similar premise and mood. If you know of rom-coms, you then know of the general formula. A (sometimes unlikely) couple usually get together by the end, after a bunch of hijinks, while also overcoming melodrama and finally confessing. These two shows, however, put their own interesting twist in the rom-com tradition, in that the main couple actually get into a relationship very early on. 'My Love Story!' and 'Tonikaku Kawaii' are just that; anime about the lives of a dating/married couple, with a relaxing and comedic tone. Very little drama present in these shows and in the few moments when there is drama, it's sincere. Not highly recommended for those seeking more of an engaging plot line rather than just a character-driven show. Both shows are primarily meant for fun, relaxation, and good laughs.

Yu☆Gi☆Oh! Duel Monsters
add

Because they are “cool kids” type anime centered on young protagonists that are introduced to a competitive game, after discovering the secrets of a spiritual artifact. These talented young individuals are up-and-coming prodigies, aided by the guidance of an ancient spirit that has extensive expert knowledge of the game’s mechanics. Along the way, the young protagonists meet new players, forming friendships and even rivalries to make things interesting. Both shows premiered in the early 2000’s, though ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ is a card game with more high stakes showdowns, intense mind games, and over-the-top opponents; while ‘Hikaru no Go’ has a more down-to-earth approach of a niche board game, ‘Go’. Both have a mix of comedy, drama, and fun showdowns throughout.

D4DJ First Mix
add

Because they are cute girls school idol shows. Actually, that's not the main reason. The more I watch 'D4DJ', the more I think this anime is like a love letter to the original 'Love Live'. 'D4DJ' feels like a big 'Love Live' reference; drawing significant influence from it, while also managing to have its own charm and spin on the idol genre. If you don't mind the CG animation, then you'll find more of the same wholesome idol fun.

Because they are of the fantasy genre that share a similar premise and setting. Even though both shows setup a fantasy world with two divided factions at war with one another, the story focuses more on a Romeo x Juliet type romance. Two characters, one from each faction, trying to find peace or some common ground are also ordered to fight their adversaries. However, after their fateful encounter, these “enemies” grow fond of each other; becoming friendlier and more open with each other after each meeting. Even so, they have to live up to their duties as enemies destined to defeat the other. Both shows primarily focus on romance, but they also have similar mix of action, magic, fantasy elements, & slice of life moments.

Sekai no Yami Zukan

Because they are both a collection of short narrated eerie horror stories based around ghosts, monsters, and Japanese urban legends/folklore. These shorts are told and shown in a traditional storybook-like style, that helps create a bit of an uncanny and authentic horror-like atmosphere. Some of the stories can come off as unintentionally hilarious too, if you're in that kind of mood for an obscure laugh.

Aoki Ryuusei SPT Layzner

...then you might like
Rokushin Gattai GodMars
add

Because they are both 1980s plot-driven, action-oriented, super mecha shows that share a similar premise. The stories of God Mars and Blue Comet SPT Layzner feature a male protagonist that was born from an alien race that wants humanity destroyed. Once both protagonists, Takeru and Eiji, learn of Earth’s fate, they set out to defend humanity. With the help of some human comrades and a trusty super robot, the defectors fight to defend Earth against a threatening alien force. Both God Mars and Layzner are retro shows that primarily focus on mecha action; though God Mars is more episodic in nature, whereas Layzner tells a slower paced survival space adventure.

Yakitate!! Japan

Shokugeki no Souma
add

Because of the similar main characters and overall comedic feeling. Souma and Azuma are both very similar to each other; talented young individuals that are masters of their culinary craft. However, due to their unorthodox methods and nonchalant personalities, they unknowingly get a bunch of other characters sucked into their crazy antics. What follows is over the top comedic reactions to the food making and eating; high stakes cooking showdowns; and a vast knowledge of food preparation. While Food Wars is all about gourmet cooking and Yakitate Japan is all about bread, they both have similar comedic flair. Big difference is Food Wars has much more appealing production value. Though if you don’t mind the retro style and are hungry for more cooking madness like Food Wars, I believe Yakitate Japan is worth a try.

Katsute Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e

Because they are both an action-oriented, somewhat political, post-war drama, that share a similar premise and setting. After fulfilling their role as “weapons of war”, the “Fairy soldiers" (Fairy Gone) and “Incarnates” (Abandoned Sacred Beasts) must now adapt to living a peaceful life in society, or be hunted down. Both shows feature a male and female duo that go around and investigate disturbances caused by the former soldiers. These soldiers have a supernatural ability to summon/become monsters; which in turn creates conflict among society.

Glass no Kamen (2005)
add

Because of the similar premise and overall feeling. I watched Kaleido Star first and always thought that Glass Mask was like KS, but with acting instead of acrobatics. The stories of Kaleido Star and Glass Mask feature a female protagonist chasing their dream of being on the big stage in the entertainment world. Though they soon find out that becoming a performer brings many challenges and hardships that talent and hard work alone can't easily overcome. Both KS and GM are slice of life/work life dramas, that share familiar themes and other elements such as comedy, conflicts, friendships, rivalries, and more; making both shows feel very similar to one another. *It's a bonus if you fancy the older shows (pre-2010)*

Kono Oto Tomare!
add

Because of the similar premise and overall feeling/execution, of its plot and characters. The stories of Chihayafuru and Kono Oto feature a group of high school students involved in a competitive club, trying to master their skill set well enough to compete in the nationals, for their respective activity/sport. Both shows are primarily school-life oriented, with a familiar balance of comedy, drama, and character development. One of the more striking resemblances between the shows is the characters. Each character, in these stories, has their own distinct personality, as well as unique backgrounds, goals, and motivations. Having the characters be not only likable, but also feel diverse in personality, makes them interesting and fun to watch. Some other similarities include art style, episode/plot structure, production values, mood, how the characters interact, and more; making both shows feel very similar to one another.
