Though the anime never got up to most of the intriguing parts of the series. The anime got up to maybe chapter 20, if that.

It's tolerable, but not for everyone. It's 77 chapters long and there's been little "normal" romantic progress. There's been romantic progress, but it's also been slow going, since the author's original intention was to encourage teens to slow down.

It does have only monthly releases as well, so it's not for those with short attention spans. I've been reading it for 3 years and I've seen the count go from 40 chapters to the current 77.

It's unusual, yes. The author actually claims to have intended the series as a model for teens to take relationships more slowly, and probably was aiming to show that not every relationship has to dive straight into sex.

The drool I accepted as a fact of the series. That part wasn't hard for me to get over and process the rest of the story.

Having read the manga, I knew most of the awkward twists and turns that were coming, but I couldn't remember the order most of them happened in. As soon as one started, though, I was pausing so much so I could bang my head against the desk and/or wince in anticipation of the awkward moment to come.

Like Clannad snuck up on you? :P

Clannad tends to get higher ratings from people the earlier they are into their anime dive and the more they like slice of life stuff. I do wonder how much of the high scores comes as residual afterglow from After Story, though. You'll either not cry much at all or cry like a bitch for that one.
