I've been an anime fan since the late 90s...or since the 80s if you count shows like Voltron and Robotech that were on TV when I was a kid. Other than a few old favorites like Escaflowne and Bastard, almost everything on my anime list is only what I've watched or re-watched since late 2013, shortly before I joined this site.
Characters are the most important thing for hooking me on a show. I can't get into a series if I don't like any of its characters, no matter how good it looks visually. Aside from that I'll give any type of series a try if it sounds interesting, but magical girl and slice of life tend to be my favorite genres. I also enjoy a good mecha series or a really well-written drama too.
The tags on my anime list describe where and how I've watched each listed anime (including before I joined MAL), and whether I've watched it subbed, dubbed, and/or raw. #x is the total # of times I've watched a series to completion (as far as I can remember). 87x means I've watched something too many times to count.
In general, I'll only give a 9 or 10 to an anime I've watched at least twice (I've made a couple of exceptions, but it's very rare), so an 8/10 is effectively the maximum score for anything that I've only seen once.
10: A once-in-a-generation anime that I also feel a very strong personal connection to. 9: A personal favorite anime I'd buy at Aniplex prices, or in a nice collector edition. 8: A very re-watchable anime I'd buy at typical Sentai, Funi, or NISA prices. 7: A re-watchable anime I'd buy as a discount edition or used copy. 6: A good mid-tier anime, worth streaming or borrowing once. 5: An okay anime that I still enjoyed despite having some major problems with it. 4: An anime that I can tell has some merits, but just didn't appeal to me at all. 3: A bad anime that might have some "so bad it's good" potential. 2: A bad anime that either turned me off immediately, or (if I finished it) was so terrible I'd prefer to forget I ever saw it. 1: An anime that wasn't just bad but actually offended me. Fortunately I haven't run into one of these yet.
