Seeing as you saw LotGH, which I consider the magnum opus of all anime. I'd highly recommend you read The Ravages of Time as it plays out a lot like LotGH except on a vastly more grandiose and complex scale. Granted, it is based of RotK which is naturally more grander and complex than LotGH, but The Ravages of Time is probably 428x more convoluted than even RotK. Most of which happens to be a big improvement on the original novel.
