I've actually watched Wonderful Days, it wasn't too bad. And Last Exile seems unusual, I'll check it out, thanks!!
Mecha is indeed a bit of a dead genre, which is why I try and ask for recommendations. I've found quite a few gems that way.
Hm if I were to recommend stuff that diverges from classic anime, I'd put forth 86 (since you've already watched Evangelion). It wasn't really my cup of tea, but it was a nice portrayal of just how unfair and brutal existence can be, for all beings.
