It's interesting reading other reviews, and noticing how they call out the same details I did, but hating them where I loved them,

Arthur the meme-knight: They know exactly how he looks, and the show constantly jokes about his stupidity.
Shinra the meme-hero: Unlike other shounen protagonists, he isn't unreasonably, unnaturally weak! He's smart, driven, and gifted, all welcome changes from basically all other shounen
The meme-captain: He's the token "I have no powers" person. Again, super refreshing that the normy isn't the MC and is a person of status
The ecchi: This is my biggest criticism of the show and where it will lose a huge part of ...

Preliminary (7/74 eps)
This story focuses on the most banal aspect of being a doctor.

News flash: Doctors are legally required to treat all lives equally, and to do everything in their power to save them.

The lead doctor would save more lives during a single shift than the antagonist has taken in 9 years (8-15). No head of any department would abandon his post to.. Spiral into the abyss because ONE of the countless lives he's saved is a serial killer.

The show is drowning in sub-teenage level logic, the art is basic and 4:3, I guess the audio wasn't a negative but that's about it.

TLDR:
If ...

This show should be renamed: "Code Geass: Deus Ex Machina"

The amount of stuff that comes out of nowhere and serves no real purpose is mind-boggling: The orange android, flight engines, VV, the ganymede, literally everything to do with Viletta etc. etc. the list could just go on forever.

Then there is the main character. At first I was not looking forward to another omniscient teenager beating the world's largest and most powerful empire, but then I was surprised to see him actually lose! Then he loses again. And again, and again, and again..

Seriously, here's how every fight goes:
Lelouch commits some horrific act (usually a war-crime)
Ambushes Britannia
They're ...

Akira (Anime) add
This show is timeless in a way so few pieces of media are.

I watched this recently, at imax and I was dumbstruck.

After years of hearing how "Akira, was so influential to my work" I didn't want to watch it.

There's no way it could live up to the hype.

But it does, my god does it ever

It's amazing how big of an impact an ending makes, and this show has an all-time milquetoast ending.

There are some powerful sub-plots. Domestic abuse, abuse of power, rape.. But when it came time to reveal the finale, it was.. limp.

It's strange how a show that rather deftly handled an awful molestation scene, infanticide, body horror, (amongst others) can't step beyond mental health stereotypes from the 80s.

It reminds me of NGE in many respects, but I feel like the overwhelming sexualisation and the utter lack of a worthy ending undermines any appreciation I could draw from it.

PROTIP:
I suggest you stop watching after Director Kurama's last scene ...

I really loved the first season, and in preparation for season 2 I rewatched it.

Boy did the first arc (first 3 episodes) of S2 absolutely kill all of my hype. It focused on one of the standout characters from S1, and attempted to tackle some very heavy topics.. But honestly they fumbled in the worst ways possible.

I was ready to drop it, but I pushed through one more episode and I'm so glad I did.

The rest of the season quickly overshadowed all of my initial concerns with some truly inspiring and genuinely excellent moments - artisticly, musically, and especially in character development.

I must give a ...

Akudama Drive (Anime) add
I came in not expecting much and boy did Pierrot prove me wrong.

Phenomenal art, amazing world, interesting characters, and a surprisingly nuanced look at power and its effects on everyday people. I was surprised when (despite what many reviews say) the main characters actually experienced growth, having to reconcile their typical, naive views with the way the world really is.

The "akudama" were well fleshed out, self-actualised, and complex too. And it was especially refreshing to see non-sexualised anime women in positions of authority.

I think this was also the first anime I've seen that could be considered to be reflecting on modern (2020) Hong Kong and ...

My god.

I just started watching it due it to being passed around as "great" but I wasn't really buying it.

It was solid, but there are a few *entire* episodes that are totally expository, out of place, and just seemed forced.

I stand by that assessment, but when somebody sticks the landing, my god does everything else just fade away.

The final twist is so satisfying, validating, and absolutely justified - as so very few twists are.

There's a lot of reviews talking about how pretentious the show is, how it ran out of budget, how much the main character whines, etc. but how so many people could completely miss the point is beyond me.

The reason this show is so beloved is simply its rawness.

It's not polished. Scenes are iffy, and the original ending has been ret-conned thrice, but I'll be damned if it doesn't make you feel something.

20 years later and it's core themes have only become more potent. In a world of incomprehensible connectivity, how do we all feel so disconnected? No other show I've seen (in any medium) has ...
