I came in not expecting much and boy did Pierrot prove me wrong.
Phenomenal art, amazing world, interesting characters, and a surprisingly nuanced look at power and its effects on everyday people. I was surprised when (despite what many reviews say) the main characters actually experienced growth, having to reconcile their typical, naive views with the way the world really is.
The "akudama" were well fleshed out, self-actualised, and complex too. And it was especially refreshing to see non-sexualised anime women in positions of authority.
I think this was also the first anime I've seen that could be considered to be reflecting on modern (2020) Hong Kong and the struggles people encounter everyday in the face of increasingly authoritarian, connected institutions worldwide.
If none of this resonates with you, then just watch it for its amazing art, or surprisingly solid English dub.
If the akudama are just normal people, then what does that make the police?
