You know, people call Ikuhara's shows like that.

Pseudo-intellectual Bait.

I forgot to reply. Sorry.

Tried to watch Tatami, but it was too fast paced for me. I have a list of shows that have fast dialog to train my reading skills.
But watching the spin-off movie first sounds like a good idea actually. Prolly gonna do that.

But yea, idk how the author of OMK is able to construct such intimately relatable scenarios. Never read/watched anything so personal, except for maybe Aku no Hana. Ugh, that moment where Takao eats Pizza with Aya's gang; jesus christ was that painful to read (in a good way).

Nah, I never got that impression. Trust me, I know some hardcore elitist who call Ikuhara's stuff "pseudo-intellectual bait" & they have the most boring taste imaginable. You can probably guess their top 5 anime/manga easily.

Oh yea, we actually share some favorites. Onanie Master was definitely a surprising story. Never would have expected to turn out like that after the first chapter lol.
Ping Pong is my kind of shit. Just the fact that such an obscure Manga was adapted in the first place is fascinating.
I want to watch Tatami Galaxy really badly, but that rapidfire dialog tho. Probably gonna watch Kaiba first.

Thank you for accepting ! Same for me, unfortunately...

I see you, rocking that hipster mentality. Nah jk, I'm just messing with ya. For me, each score means something notably different & a 10/10 system allows for a more nuanced portrayal of my taste. The difference between, say, Yu Yu Hakusho & Guilty Crown is so monumental in terms of enjoyment/resonance that I couldn't bring myself to not put them at opposite sides of the spectrum. In my mind it would be an insult to my favorites otherwise.

Alright, I'll probably watch Penguindrum first then. Seems easier to get into & probably helps me to contextualise Utena's style/themes.

I'm lazy asf rn, just read this convo I had: https://myanimelist.net/comtocom.php?id1=3955909&id2=5471782

Bruh, navigating through your lists is a nightmare on my phone lol. It looks very pretty tho.

I was wondering if there is anything I need to know/read before going into RG Utena? I'm planning to watch it rather soon and people recommended that I dig into some analysis before watching it, in order to properly understand it's themes & structure. What do you think?

Also, no 9s or 10s yet? What does a story need to achieve to meet your criteria for a "masterpiece", as MAL calls it? And are there other stories across different media (books, films, video games) that meet such requirements?

Nosma Mar 18, 2018 5:42 AM
True.

Man, my auto correction keeps making such stupid irrational corrections; is->iseems, there->thereally, masterpiece->masterpincest wft....

My previous message (the intended one, at least);

The pleasure's mine. Penguindrum is officially a part of me now. It has affected me so deeply that it is hard to visualize myself without it.

See, I don't think it is enlightenment, it is not that hard to comprehend, deprived of fanservice. Earnestly, I believe there are pieces of art that are just better. What makes it absolutely unique is how cutely abstract and profound it is, how comically realistic it is, how memorable, influenceable and distinguishable it is. It doesn't do anything groundbreaking, but it has its strong individuality and resonance. And that is what a masterpiece, or even, what a genius mostly does, with very few exceptions like Einstein. Rewatch it, and so will I do, too.

My brother is watching Utena right now, and all I can say is that it may be the most profound experience I've had. A masterpiece. Ikuhara talks to me like no other. I seriously love it.

Same here, I do like the black and white in general though. has this sort of impact, but the jojo one seems like they put a lot of work and effort into the colors.
Passion Mar 17, 2018 11:09 PM
Oh yes, its actually just as amazing as its hyped up to be. Its like restarting the world of Jojo's but keeping stands, the duo of the protagonists is one of the best in all of the series i will say. Multiple antagonists along with the overarching pressure of a race across the nation keeps the whole thing super exciting. If your not already reading the coloured chapters I do recommend them, makes it pop a bit more in my opinion.

Ya whenever Giorno says "I have a dream" I get a little hype. Ya Araki has been doing that forever, I guess the issue is whenever he gets his work turned into an anime it gets censored. Like ACDC from part 2 who got his name changed to Esidisi LOL. I like how they have these unique stands and then match together in the weirdest ways, its an experience that I missed in part 4 where most of the villains worked alone, especially the GOAT villain kira.
Passion Mar 17, 2018 1:39 PM
I love a lot of characters from part 5, Giorno feels like a mixture of Dio and Jonathan which is super cool. I also love Bruno and Mista, the stands still feel really creative and there is some really interesting side villains, the main protag is kind of lacking in character development, and his stand is one that I would say "just works" lol.
