Just after I wrote that last message, a landscaper my apartment complex contracted to clean up hedges and such was apparently taken by a sort of wire trimmer fiver, because he decided to enter my fenced patio and shred to bits my whole garden. Ok, I lie, he did not destroy the potted plants on my window seals, so... thanks? I guess.

I have no idea what came through this man's mind: the garden was just recovering from the cold so it was very far from overgrown (only a couple of my sages had made a real come back), several plants were very visibly staked, the patio was closed (goes without saying that the man didn't knock), my potted succulents were out and blooming... I mean, it didn't look like it was a back alley mess in need of cleaning! Plus the guy left my shredded plant pieces all over the place, so it was definitely looking worse, by all possible accounts, after he came in. My current working theory is that he was either sage-rabbid or dumb to the point they should probably no let him out with anything sharper than a pair of scissors. Rounded tips. -_-

So anyway, my apartment manager was treated to a nice welcome the next morning... and then, I am back to hoping at least some of my plants manage to come back from death once more (I guess it's very thematically in line with Easter) -_-

Your balcony sounds amazing! Philodendrons are indeed very pretty plants, I had no idea they could sustain full sun, actually, but I like your environmental engineering efforts!!
Here it is too dry for those types of plants. I have some tropical plants indoors and had to finally put my poor Thai blue fern under a cloche because it was mummifying as it grew (despite my turning seriously ferocious with my water spray bottle, trying to out-mist the Texan summer! Ahaha). Even my succulents need to be protected from the sun in the summer's height. I didn't have your architectural calms, and just put together a makeshift awning that would probably hurt your soul ^^

João Guimarães Rosa's Campo Geral is now on my to-read list! Put Lonesome Dove on yours, if you like the idea of the American West, it is a very good book. Not necessarily a love letter to that time and place though, but a very vibrant window on it, revolving around a long journey and the feeling of adventure, in all its romantic and not-so romantic aspects. They made a series of 4 movies on it, in the 80's. I watched 2 and stopped everything to read it before I would spoil myself: it's one of the best books I have read in a long time!

Oh and yeah, last year and the pandemic pretty much killed whatever trust and hope in humanity I had left. I didn't (yet) turn fully misanthrope, I still like people when taken individually, but as a whole we are just a dreadful species.

If you're in the mood, just watch everything by that man (I loved everything I have watched from him and more recent movies of his are also strikingly beautiful: the way he manages skies and rain/water in animation is breathtaking!)

Also, 26 episodes/month is definitely binging by my standards too :p
Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! made me laugh so much: I need to pick it up again, I had caught up with the translation so I started to check it out less regularly and eventually let it slip -_-

As for reading "real" books, I made myself an account on Goodreads some time ago, thinking it would be like MAL and help me find good books: well scratch that, the recommendation and user comparison system of this website are utter shit. But I still found a couple awesome things to read (I am currently alternating between a western, a fantasy and a sci-fi books and all 3 are truly amazing: I lucked out!)

Man, academia is not easy but getting back to it is the worst: I left it for around 2 years between my master and PhD, taking some time to decide where I wanted to go and working other little jobs meanwhile.... and though in my case I was happy to get back to it, it was very hard to re-enter the right frame of mind to be a student again, once I had stopped. And sounds like you were out more than 2 years, so props to you for hanging in there and going through it!! <3

Ahaha, they didn't send me a gun (yet) but I hear gunshots every so and then (think weekly at least) and I am in a very calm and normal part of a little city... wtf? :o I am choosing to believe that people here just love setting off fireworks, one or two at a time, all year long. My sanity needs that filter ^^ Texas is how I see America: a land of extremes, weather included. I have a little patio I had extensively planted (and pandemic helping, was borderline talking to said plants on coffee breaks, don't judge me! Ahah) And it all froze out, I admit the day I realized it wasn't gonna make it through I almost cried - Ahaha, I swear, I need to see people again ^^ But the good news is I had planted only natives (you know, to help the pollinators and all) and apparently they all managed Texas craziness like champs: they are all restarting from the roots and I think I only lost one in the end :o
--> See what I mean, I have a plant/garden problem: I just find ways to talk about it. Some have cats, I have plants -_- Ahaha, omg I'm old.

Speaking of old, I badly sprained my ankle doing nothing more than taking a light jog around the block to get to my apartment's backdoor, last weekend, on a perfectly level cement sidewalk. How sad is that? You hit 30 and it's all downhill! T_T

And yeah, I guess you guys have your own Trump to deal with atm. Here, the change at the helm has helped: the pandemic was handled like a nightmare but since our own donkey was unseated, the vaccination campaign is at least going swiftly. I actually got vaccinated yesterday (and despite what I just said above I am actually healthy ^^ and I also work from home, so I was not expecting to see a vaccine until early summer at the very best)... But it's lucky they are going fast because at the state level, donkeys are still aplenty: Texas governor decided last month that the pandemic had ended and no restriction whatsoever, not even just masks, should be maintained. So we better vaccinate fast to save those poor fools who believe in that sort of BS. Ah well.

You broke the Hoshi no Koe vibe! Can't say I'm sorry for it, though!
-> also, very good movie, but don't watch it (or most movies from that director) when you are already sad or feeling nostalgic, it will end you!

I have been told many times HxH is better than one would think, actually... but I have so many thing to catch up with and those shonen are so long!! I have also been reading a whole of a lot more recently, too, and 24H a day is really not that much time ^^
Hard life :p

Glad to hear you found a better balance, btw! Academia can be a bitch and it took me a good burn-out to reach the level of wisdom required to find a better life balance... and academia is my job, I imagine it probably doesn't help when you happen to have another job in addition to it!!

I am indeed still in Murica. Boy has it been an interesting couple years over here ^^
I recently moved from Tennessee to Texas. I kinda like it here, the weather is way better (aka drier, I can deal with hot but I hate humidity, and hot humidity is my nemesis!)... well we did just go through a huge polar cell madness where temperatures dropped from 25C to -20C for a week, and then back up, all of that in barely 48H transitions each time, and now we are entering tornado season, I have been told... So ask me again if I survive spring, I guess ^^
I moved during the pandemic, so it's been a bit empty, social life wise though. But I have been very lucky to have a good group of friends who are all pretty good with remote communications, so it's honestly been fine!

"Hope you are doing well and we can talk soon! If not, see you in a couple of years! ::)"
--> Your last sentence was prophetic T_T

I hear you about studies: I was finishing a PhD last year and I am still barely recovered. I have not watched many animes recently... sadness!
But I did watch Kantaro on Netflix and I feel that qualifies ^^ (Do watch it if you have the occasion, this is beautiful! Ahaha)

How have you been in you last 2 years?
I feel we're emulating a sort of MAL-friends Hoshi no Koe situation, but so far the we're maintaining the frequency at once every two years! :p

Hey there \o/
Ok, so I guess I took one of those long breaks from anime series again ^^ (to be honest it was a break from many things as work intensity has ramped up slowly but surely over the last year for me: trying to finish my PhD here, and man that feels good but that's a lot of work!)
Has been ages... I had left Kaiba mid-way too, so I'll have to rewatch it from the beginning, which is not too bad a thing to have to do :p

And wait a minute! Holy f****, it has been almost two years!! I just checked the date of your last message and that was way older than I though (I thought I had talked to you last year or something). Man, time flies... will you even remember me? :o
Well, now that I am looking at those old posts, I'm thinking that I will need to add some music to my phone too: you had interesting recommendations and since bike is my primary mean of transportation now, I have plenty time to listen to stuff \o/

Well, that was a particularly unconstructive post, but I was re-activating my account here and thought I'd say hi... so that was it: Hi! From an old MAL friend ^^
Hope everything is going well with you and talk to you soon, hopefully!

It's quite nice. The intro made me think it's going to be a death metal song :)

Same.
Norilla Mar 22, 2017 1:16 PM
Yes. Things have been getting much better for me.
Norilla Mar 21, 2017 6:52 PM
Yeah, I went back to college for gaming.
Norilla Mar 15, 2017 7:05 AM
I see. My internet's pretty bad, so it'd be hard to do the roulette, it's partly why I've been so slow at watching things... ; -;

I've mostly been busy. I quit my weekday job and went back to college.
Norilla Mar 14, 2017 12:52 PM
Indeed... it has been a while.

I haven't really abandoned it, it just went quiet and every time I show up there was no one's there, so I just don't appear often.
