This recommendation is quite obvious. The Night is Short, Walk on Girl feels like a sequel to The Tatami Galaxy. We have the same director, art style, universe, some shared characters, similar humor, and even some terms used in both shows are the same. E.g. 'Raven Haired Maiden' and a bunch others. I don't really have to say much. Similar romantic eccentric journey with a lot of comedy and non-sense and crazy characters linked by fate where no encounter is a coincidence. The Night is Short, Walk on Girl kinda feels like a short and really fast-paced Tatami Galaxy but it's not a copy at all, it has its own style, story appeal, and fresh characters. The main difference and this is something I really enjoyed in The Night is Short, Walk on Girl is that it really focus on both lovers whereas in Tatami Galaxy it focuses mainly on the guy. I really loved watching both perspectives as every event happened.

'Softcore hentai' is back yet again. Pretty much the same thing once again, switching the characters and the settings a bit, but we still have a submissive female lead and an aggressive male lead having sex or something similar every episode.

add

Two adventure anime following the paths of two kids as they explore an uncharted world in search for their mysterious parents. The universes are very different but in a way, the main characters and their circumstances are somewhat similar. Gon and Riko share this incredible positivity, determination, and the will to face adversity in order to find the truth about their parents, while Killua and Regu protect them like caring big brothers, build unbreakable bonds of friendship along the way, and overcome their limitations working as a team. The main difference consists in Hunter x Hunter (2011) being a more action and strategic fights oriented anime with a lot of physical development, while Made in Abyss focuses on world-building and the beauty and mystery of its dangerous yet beautiful unexplored world. In general, both manage to balance the cuteness of the characters and beauty of their backgrounds with a cruel and harsh reality that keeps punishing their main characters and presenting physical and psychological obstacles to be overcome in order to unveil the mysteries.

NHK ni Youkoso!
add

Welcome to the NHK is a dramatic and psychological love story that centers around a group of NEETS with various social disorders and traumas. Throughout the story, the characters learn to accept themselves and the ones around them and try to fit in society. The story has its share of comedy, depressing, inspiring and heart-warming moments. Planetes gives you the same feel, as its story manages to mix romance, drama, comedy and a bit of psychology just like Welcome to the NHK. Planetes plot main focus is on the expansion of humankind into space and all the issues surrounding it, however just like NHK, throughout the adventure, you get to know the main and side characters to an intimate and psychological level and all their backgrounds and motivations to go into space, where in NHK you get the dark backgrounds and reasons why the characters can't function correctly in society. Space is a vast place and it can be very lonely if you don't have someone alongside you. In essence, both anime deal with isolation and social integration and are incredibly inspiring in their own way. The setting might be different, but it doesn't matter where a human being goes, he'll still need social interaction or he'll eventually break. Beautiful looking and a great OST to boot, these anime are a roller-coaster of emotions that might make you cry, laugh, have a good time, feel depressed, or even inspired.

Softcore hentai basically, although this show only aired one episode, the style is unmistakable and I'm pretty sure it's the same anime with slight differences on plot/characters. Both stories also start with alcohol.

Dennou Coil
add

We have 2 must-watch Sci-Fi/Mystery anime over here. If you watched and liked one of these, you definitely should take a look at the other. Dennou Coil is kinda like a modern version of S.E.L as it plays around with the technology used at the moment each was released. It is not as deep and thought-provoking, however, that does not mean it is inferior. What it lacks in symbolism compared to S.E.L is compensated with fun and heart-warming moments. It is also a lot easier to follow and understand the plot/character motivation, while still managing to be confusing and trippy as S.E.L at times. A parallel world can be found in the universe of both anime, in which the Main Characters explore in order to discover more about their past, about the technology they're using, and trying to crack every mystery/conspiracy. I would say you have a bigger chance liking Dennou Coil if you enjoyed S.E.L as Dennou Coil aims for a bigger audience, while S.E.L is a pretty niche anime that not that many people tend to enjoy.

Alien 9
add

Emotionally unstable kids forced to fight "aliens" for mysterious reasons. Throughout the story, the characters do not only fight the unknown creatures but they also fight their own emotions and have to surpass various obstacles and limitations. Teamwork is also a key to beat the creatures. Alien 9 is an incomplete work just like EVANGELION, however, the latter got a movie that completes the anime and answers all the questions. The protagonist of both anime is always depressed, crying and scared of everything. Most of the time they would be dead if it wasn't for exterior help. However, it is up to you to find out if they emotionally grow through the story after watching both shows. Animation and sound wise EVANGELION is way superior, but do not let the simple Alien 9 visuals put you off. Give it a chance.

Steins;Gate
add

Two "weird" groups of young people having a normal life while using some type of experimental technology. Granted, the technology used in each is very distinct, but both have some kind of futuristic elements not achieved by our current technology. What makes Steins;Gate and Dennou Coil similar to me is the simple beginning with hints for a big mystery or conspiration that later develops throughout the story. Apart from a similar mysterious aura and issues around these new and futuristic technologies and the consequences of its use, there are also calm or fun episodes that contrast with the dramatic and dark moments present in both shows. Both also have share conspiracy elements. Character-wise, they are immature and childish at times, but serious when the situation requires and have some development. Some characters have pretty unique designs and personalities, especially in Steins;Gate. Steins;Gate is a more serious anime and feels more realistic, but has some fantasy/sci-fi elements like the time travel (as the genre implies). Dennou Coil also has its share of realism and sci-fi that is closest to our current technology (AR glasses) but also has a big fantasy element that is "the obsolete spaces".

Summer Wars
add

Dennou Coil is a show that shares many common themes with some other sci-fi works I watched previously. From those, the most similar one has to be Summer Wars, Steins;Gate or Serial Experiments Lain. But for now, I will be focusing exclusively on Summer Wars. Laster on I will probably create a recommendation for the rest. Firstly, focusing on the animation and sound, it can be noted that Summer Wars and Dennou Coil were both animated by Madhouse, so the characters designs, especially face and expressions have some similarities. Over-the-top and cheerful, while also having a more violent animation in specific moments of the story and also using a bit of CGI, but it wasn't bad. The soundtrack is also quite fun and cheerful aswell, while a bit darker on some occasions on Dennou Coil. Now focusing on what really matters, in the two universes, there is a futuristic type of technology that people rely on their daily routine. In Summer Wars the plot starts with a case of cyber-hacking and account theft, while in Dennou Coil the plot starts with a mystery related to missing people "lost on the other side". Most of the action happens in Japan, however, these two universes share the thematic of an alternative reality/world. At the start, both stories are pretty cheerful and the technology creates a utopian world, but problems arise later on and the group of kids of the respective anime has to save the day. The most important message you get from Dennou Coil and Summer Wars is the importance of family and the power of friendship. The message might be pretty innocent and simple, but the themes explored in the movie and anime are a bit dark, especially in Dennou Coil.

Bokura no

We have the same circumstances, kids piloting huge mechas as the only hope to save the Earth. The plot is very distinct but in both cases, we have kids struggling with their emotions while they have to maintain their sanity and not break under pressure or Humanity is doomed. Lots of mysterious, hidden truth, monsters attacking mysteriously, and someone pulling the strings from the shadows. Visually, Bokurano is weaker than NGE, even though it was released over a decade later, but it still has some interesting character designs. Final conclusion: Bokurano might have implemented many elements from NGE in its plot, but it is far from being a clone. It has its own identity and it is worth giving a try if you are into this kind of mecha anime/anime that plays a lot with the pilot's feelings.

Flip Flappers

Firstly, the similarities between animation and music are clear. Both anime have colorful and vibrant art styles and some songs have the same vibe. Secondly, I like how the two stories are cheerful, crazy and give the show uniqueness and diversity thanks to the many creative adventures the protagonists go through. Humanity Has Declined has its own uncommon settings and fantasy elements that break with the common logic, while Flip Flappers starts with a common school setting, but early establishes its own fantasy world and fantasy elements as well. There are also some surreal and sometimes trippy scenes shared in the two stories too. Lastly, while both stories look very vibrant and cheerful on the surface, both hold dark secrets, facts and backgrounds that later in the show are revealed or hinted.

Animation style aside, Gankutsuou and Monster plot have many common key elements and an antagonist with deep motivation to perform his evil deeds and trying to apparently murder and destroy everyone's life. It's undeniable how The Count and Johan Liebert are similar but also very different at the same time. They seem like the cruelest monsters on the surface of Earth, but both hold strong motivations and origin behind their plots and reasons to act like monsters. Manipulators, cold-blooded and heartless but end up charming many viewers including myself. The plots move slowly but you'll eventually get to conclusions and decide if you sympathize with the antagonist or hate him. The revelations are for the most time pretty unexpected and evil characters might actually not be as bad as they seemed initially. Both stories are very slow at the start, but as soon as the initial secrets are revealed, the rollercoaster of emotions and plot-twists doesn't stop until the end of the anime.

The two anime definitely have the same vibe and possess common main themes like corruption, political systems clashing and the fight for democracy by some party of the story. Rose of Versailles OST also reminded me of LotGH and the animation also holds some similarities despite the different periods they were animated. The time periods the stories happens is very different but holds many similar social and moral problems. The main characters develop a lot through the two long anime and change their minds at some time, most characters are not one-dimensional and they learn with their mistakes. Both anime are almost like animated documentaries of war. If you like to see what happens behind the curtains of war instead of just witnessing the action, who's plotting, scheming and commanding the troops, look no further.

These anime share a similar plot structure: we have a different case/adventure in most of the episodes while still retaining a background main plot. Throughout the story we learn more about each MC personality and past. If you like futuristic action and some mature themes, you got here two anime perfect for you. The crew in Cowboy Bebop is more of a 'bandit crew' while the crew in GitS is an investigation team and everything would point that they are opposite poles but they actually share many similarities. Just take in mind the settings and world are quite different.

These 2 anime were directed by the same director, have a similar art style and catchy OP/ED, and both have a pet that appears frequently in every episode. We have bears in Yuri Kuma Arashi and we have penguins in Penguindrum. The shows do not only share visual similarities but also share the same central themes of love, friendship, and (sometimes) family. Some Yuri Kuma Arashi characters share the same ideology and motivation of some Penguindrum characters. They almost look like references. These include characters with twisted motivations and concept of love and friendship that will do anything to achieve what they desire including betrayal. Some also share hidden and dark pasts that only very close to the ending are revealed. Both endings have a similar feeling too. On the side note, Yuri Kuma Arashi has the love between girls as a central theme while Penguindrum focuses more on family, but both have some light lesbian scenes. TLDR: The anime have a similar story, characters, and many other traits so if you enjoyed Penguindrum there is a big chance you will enjoy Yuri Kuma Arashi.

Crazy teams that get in messy situation for money - Check Badass MC - Check Shootouts, chases, and explosions - Check Those are the 3 most obvious similarities between those 2. Despite not having much of a plot, the little stories told in every episode and some character background will give you enough reason to love both anime. You just change the setting from Space and Future to Earth and Present time. To sum this up, if you like one of those, you'll get the same action and formula in the other and it's almost certain you'll like it too, especially if you are an Action Movies fan.

How is Eva similar to Yuuki Yuuna you ask? Well, we have teenagers desperately fighting "monsters" that "come out of nowhere" they don't understand. There's a lot of despair in the minds of these teens because they are forced to fight these powerful entities where no one else can. The main difference is Eva being a Mecha anime and Yuuki Yuuna being a Magical Girl anime, so that might lead people to ignore one or the other because those genres aren't really for everyone. Eva is darker, deeper, and longer. I ultimately enjoyed it a lot more than Yuuki Yuuna, but you might want to give a chance to both.
