The Evangelion franchise as a whole is woefully overrated, yet somehow these Rebuild films have managed to deliver on what was seemingly impossible for the original series... a satisfying and worthwhile ending that doesn't alienate its own audience. As with this entire series, Shirō Sagisu's music shines through above everything else and they actually make you care about the characters this time around. None of the original series' influence can be seen with them. The story is bollocks until the last 10 minutes. The animation is decent enough but far too generic typical of Eva’s style.
Hideaki Anno can now finally fully focus
...
on working on Shin Ultraman which is shaping up to be just as amazing as Shin Godzilla.
Overall, the rebuild films are just a more worthwhile experience than the originals ever were.

"If there ever was an age of miracles it ended a long time ago. They're called miracles because they don't happen."
I'll be honest after my previous experiences with Godzilla and anime, I didn't have the highest of hopes for this one, but I can put those doubts away because this… is incredible! and the sole reason I'm going to be mega tired for the rest of the day due to binging this all this morning.
Although the first two episodes are admittedly a bit of a slog once you hit episode three the series kicks into overdrive and never stops. Brilliantly directed by Atsushi Takahashi and
...
scored just as well by Kan Sawada, studio Bones have outdone themselves with this one. Although admittedly you are more likely to get something more out of this is you are a Godzilla fan to begin with. Otherwise you're gonna be hopelessly lost at points.
Overall, Godzilla Singularity Point maybe a little light on the characterisation but the Kaiju action is plentiful and the characters are endearing. My man Jet Jaguar also had the biggest glow up, bravo.
Also Mei totally reminds me of a friend of mine and I can never unsee that.

I'm not entirely sure where I stand with this new version of Shaman King given that the original show has such a banger of an opening theme and was an equally decent show, this new one already had the deck stacked against it. But in fairness, it's not overly terrible, it's not overly amazing either but I digress. The story is okay, art equally so. The sound design and music is pretty damn good all things considered but the characters seem to be a noticeable step down from the original show, a shame since I’m getting a ridiculous amount of enjoyment out of this one.
Overall,
...
I’d recommend viewing this one with significantly lowered expectations but I guess we’ll have to see how this one improves.

Ano Hito no I ni wa Boku ga Tarinai took me by surprise when I first picked it up since I really didn't think a lot about it and thought it a very cutesy love story. Glad to see I was proven wrong by what turned out to be a very Lovecraftian-esque tale. The love story is still there but is pushed more into the background in terms of exploring the characters feeling of wanting to belong more than anything. The art compliments it brilliantly with some near nightmare-inducing images contrasting brilliantly with the character designs.
Very much a recommended read if you're looking for something
...
a bit out there and different.

"People trust you, they let their guards down so you can peer into their hearts."
If I could sum up this trilogy with a few words, it would come down to 'wasted potential'. It tries to convey a more spiritual meaning to Godzilla and why people act in such an aggressive way whenever they hear his name. Unfortunately it never fully delivered on those concepts and ultimately just went for shock and angst.
Following the destruction of Mechagodzilla City, the remaining Bilusaludo on the Aratrum demand justice for Haruo destroying what they saw as necessary to defeat Godzilla. The humans disagree, believing Haruo exposed the Bilusaludo's true
...
intentions of assimilating Earth. The Bilusaludo revolt and shut down the ship's engine room, forcing the ship to run on secondary batteries for the next two days. On Earth, Haruo learns from Dr Martin that Yuko is rendered brain-dead with the nanometal in her body keeping her alive. He also learns that those treated by the Houtua survived the nanometal's attempt to absorb them, with Methphies deceiving the survivors into believing their survival was divine intervention. When confronted by Haruo about converting the remaining humans, Methphies reveals his plan to bring the Exifs' god to Earth and needs Haruo's help to make it possible. Dr Martin advises Haruo to hide until tensions ease... however, Metphies has other plans to try and bring chaos to the otherwise unshaken peace with the arrival of an old god.
The direction is a little better than City on the Edge of Battle but nothing for the most part happens. Takayuki Hattori's score is at it's weakest here lacking a lot of the punch that his previous two had. The actual story is a little bit more interesting showcasing Metphies having groomed Haruo into the perfect follower but not accounting for the death of his closest friend and love. He attempts to corrupt him in order for Ghidorah to rule the universe. That itself is quite interesting but fails at the final hurdle of actually delivering.
Overall, the Godzilla anime trilogy is really not worth wasting your time, a huge missed opportunity with unlikable characters yet some stunning animation and decent music.

"Descended or not, they're not an evolution more like a new generation."
Part of me really wants to like this trilogy but it's making it incredibly difficult due to how shocking the quality of the actual story is. The positive stuff from the previous adventure carries over, like the music and animation but dear god has it just nose-dived into pure angst.
Following the events of Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, the Aratrum is unable to contact Haruo and the rest after their encounter with the original Godzilla. The Captain orders the Aratrum's withdrawal if drones fail to find survivors within 48 hours. Haruo reunites with some
...
of his teammates and is taken captive by a humanoid hunting party. The group are reunited with Martin Lazzari whose platoon have been healed by a humanoid race who is known as the "Houtua", surviving descendants of humans who remained on Earth and safeguard the egg of their fallen deity. The group are telepathically questioned by the Houtua leaders over why they burned their lands, letting them go once Haruo explains they were only attacking Godzilla. Haruo's group reunites with Metphies and the other survivors during an encounter with the Servum. During the fight, Galu-Gu realizes that the twins' arrowheads are laced with "nanometal", the nanotechnology used to create Mechagodzilla!
The direction is definitely a step down from the previous one getting even flatter in comparison to the more interesting shots of the first. However, the fight between Mechagodzilla and Godzilla are the biggest highlight and show some semblance of competence. Takayuki Hattori's might be one of the best parts of this film, especially his themes for Mechagodzilla. The story has some decent concepts about remembering your origins but it's so needlessly edgy that it hurts. The characters are perhaps even worse than the last one but again it has some concepts which are okay.
Overall, City on the Edge of Battle, a stupid title, is pretty a disappointing story that is backed up by a halfway decent score.

"He is the punishing iron hammer for the arrogant. For the species who pronounce themselves as lords of creation, a divine avenger will pay them a visit. And so, he will..."
So, after 63 years we finally got a full animated Godzilla film. Was it worth the wait? Ehhhhh. It's hard to judge the entire story to this one based solely on this film alone since it is part of a trilogy and therefore incomplete. However, as a film on it's own its nothing terrible but it's nothing amazing either.
In the last summer of the 20th century, giant monsters began plaguing Earth and humanity is driven
...
to near extinction by one monster which eliminated the others: Godzilla. Two alien races with ulterior motives, the religious Exif and the technologically advanced Bilusaludo, came to Earth and offered their assistance against Godzilla. After the Bilusaludo's gambit with Mechagodzilla failed before it could be activated, both the aliens and humanity were forced to abandon Earth and emigrate to Tau-e via the spaceship Aratrum. The time is now 20 years after the exodus from Earth and 11.9 light-years away, and the Aratrum contains the remaining humans accompanied by Exif and Bilusaludo refugees. After 2 decades of bad luck, humanity turns around and heads back to earth, arriving 10,000 years later they discover Earth is still inhabitable but Godzilla still remains...
Directors, Kōbun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita both do an excellent job and provide us with some great battle sequences and lighting techniques, very visually appealing, which is step one. However, I feel they played it too safe in some areas so it comes across as rather flat. I was a little iffy about Takayuki Hattori returning to compose for this franchise after his efforts on SpaceGodzilla and 2000, but the musical score for this one is by far his best yet. It still lacks in certain cases but he has certainly improved since the 90s. The main characters aren't anything memorable, the humans especially as they simply come across as hyper angry meatheads, but the cast all do a decent job both subbed and dubbed.
Overall, Planet of the Monsters as the first part in a trilogy wasn't anything overly memorable and suffers from unlikable characters. However, the art and sound design are top-notch.

I've always got a soft spot for manga that are self aware but this might just be the finest example of how you do it right.
The title alone had me hooked, The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You. My brain went, yes Dan, you must read this. I’m so bloody glad I ended up doing so, I laughed, I cried, it makes me experience every emotion known to man and then some.
I cannot recommend it enough, at the time of writing we have just reached the 11th Girlfriend... so only 89 left to go. One for everyone’s tastes.

"Maybe it's because they don't know that once you lose something, you can never get it back again."
Attack on Titan: Lost Girls is another OVA which feels integral to the plot and development of it's characters that I'm equally as amazed that it never got an official localisation.
As Annie is my favourite character from this show I'm certainly happy she got an episode all to herself exploring a day in the life of her role in the Military Police. It adds much more to her character that is painfully glossed over in the main show for the most part and even provides the hints to
...
the great depth of her own story, even hinting at the then unknown twists from Season 3. It's just remarkable storytelling. While I do enjoy the Mikasa episode from this trilogy, it certainly didn't provide me with anything new but still was a great watch.
As with most of Titan, it's equal parts visually gorgeous and emotionally heart wrenching. I cannot recommend this to you enough.

"Everyone saw your fight. You've given them hope that Humans don't have to lose to the Titans if we fight correctly. It was really outstanding!"
Attack on Titan: No Regrets, looking back, really is integral to the plot of the first half of Season 3. It shows the growth of an early Levi in the Survey Corps and all his loss and development into Humanity's Most Powerful Soldier.
Well, what can I say apart from this is near perfection in terms of visuals, storytelling and music. It gives focus to one of the more popular characters of the series and fully explores his otherwise vague backstory from
...
the main show, dear god is it heart wrenching.
Why it has never been officially localised I do not know since it greatly benefits the viewer going into latter seasons and explores his relationship with Commander Erwin. But overall, a fantastic two part OVA that's in desperate need of a proper release one day.
