To help keep track of what I have and haven't seen - MAL
Since I've been updating my list for quite a long time now, I've seen and read an abundance more anime and manga. Over time my opinion has changed on quite a few things and remained constant on others. I think it's a nice thing to remember how certain series made you feel and experience all sorts of various emotions. So here are a few 'titles' that I'll look back at in time and reminisce.
Most Heart-warming: Natsume Yuujinchou series
This is something of a surprise because I originally watched the first season years ago (maybe 3 or 4?) and I found it so boring that I dropped it after the first few episodes. After a couple of months, on a whim, I went back and rewatched it and fell in love. It became like an addiction - even 6 seasons doesn't feel like nearly enough. And even now I go back and rewatch the whole thing to experience the same thrill and feels. Two of my most revisited episodes are Season 4 episode 13 and Season 6 episode 1. Natsume is also my no. 1 favourite character for sorta blurry reasons. His character is everything and more.
Most Heart-breaking: Clannad Afterstory
Clannad is infamous for being beautifully sad, and it really, truly is. No spoilers here if you haven't seen it but trust me when I say it will break your heart.
I can't think of any other series that made me cry like this did but I'm almost certain there were others. Going through lists doesn't help either bc it's none of the ones like (your lie in april, charlotte, plastic memories, angel beats)... Maybe I'll remember one day.
(21-07-2020) There are a couple to add: Orange, Hoshiai no Sora
Most Psychologically-screwy: Neon Genesis Evangelion
I can say now with full confidence that this show is pure brilliance and I love it. However, my younger more naive self honestly got f*cked up progressively more the more it went on. I used to hate Asuka and Shinji - I rated NGE something like a 6 on MAL. Now, I think Asuka is the best character of that whole show, still hate Shinji, and rate it a 10. For a couple of weeks afterwards I couldn't stop thinking about it, I questioned everything, but at the end of the day no character has made me hate them more than Shinji. That's something great actually. I can be confident in hating him because he was so well written into being more than a 2d flat reflection of the creator's desires. Like I acknowledge Kirito from SAO is a shitty protagonist and character all round, but I don't hate him simply bc it's bad writing. Whereas Shinji can be seen as an actual person and that's great, he's flawed, he's realistic, and still I hate him. So even though I veered off course from what I was originally saying, Shinji > hate him but great character vs. Kirito (example) > don't care and terrible character.
Best OST: A few contenders for this one:
Zankyou no Terror - a big reason why this is in my top 10 [EDIT: whoops no longer in the top 10] is solely due to the soundtrack. One of my favourite scenes of all time is incredibly enhanced due to the intensity and melancholy of the music playing alongside nerve-racking events. If I can convince anyone to watch this anime, stick to it even if it's only for the music.
Houseki no Kuni - a recent anime with a whole lot more going for it than just the soundtrack. Beautiful visuals, interesting story, good characters, unique setup and environment. Too good to be true. I still frequently listen to this OST while reading.
Made in Abyss - another great OST. The only thing that comes to mind is Kevin Penkin (hope I got that right) who created this masterful soundtrack. It's the sound of fantasy and adventure.
Tokyo Ghoul - lastly is ye olde (but not actually that old) Tokyo Ghoul. I'm mentioning it because for quite a long time this was my favourite anime and Kaneki was my favourite character. Though my thoughts have changed, I'll never forget singing along with Wanderers, On My Own, Glassy Sky and of course, Unravel. It's sad what happened to the series and I'm sorry to see all that Ishida Sui went through, but these songs hold a particular fondness with me and a lot of others out there.
Most Laugh-inducing: It's a tie between...
Daily Lives of Highschool boys - The entire segment of literature girl brings me to tears every time I rewatch it... (which has been a fair amount).
Most Sweaty-palm, Heart-racing: *I'll add later*
