I guess I'm just one of the old guard now. Was your age when I found the site and found it useful to keep track of where I left off on the anime I take long breaks from.
1. Well i mean... in overall HxH is better than Code Geass based on Explanations and Detail, also far better explained Power System. BUT, HxH has no ending and some pretty boring Arcs. So i might even agree on that, because CG has still some really huge events, like the End of Euphy or the final Episode of Code Geass R2, which were really amazing
I recommend watching "Legend of the Galactic Heroes." Reinhard goes through the character development you say Lelouch goes through and it isn't forced. Actually, I think Lelouch was supposed to be a copy of Reinhard but the writers realized they had no idea how to write a truly morally conflicted character, not to mention all of the romantic comedy hijinks kept interrupting the tone and story. Then the writers also ripped off Evangelion.
Lelouch collapses part of the Tokyo settlement after a mere four-minute warning then says to his classmates he and the Black Knights don't kill innocents. This was after there were episodes that established he tried to be on the moral high ground, but the writers just decided something edgy needed to happen that episode. I suppose you don't have enough life experience to understand proper characterization. As long as the script tells you he is smart and the one who is right, you'll believe it. But even at your age I would have caught how badly written it all was.
By the way, Zero Requiem is written specifically to appeal to naive children. People wouldn't get over their racism after two months of mutual suffering. If Suzaku is exposed as a false hero, Lelouch's lie will fall apart and Gino, Anya, and Nonette would spring into action to execute him for his war crimes and killing their friends.
I was being sarcastic. π Lelouch goes from being an angsty psychopath to a misunderstood and tender-hearted guy in an instant. He's probably the least consistent character I have ever seen.
My favorite part of Code Geass is when Lelouch creates his own UN despite being a cackling psychopath who brought down part of a city on an untold number of civilains at the end of the last season. Such masterful character consistency!

1. I wish Code Geass had less Plot Armor and stupid Plot Holes + skipped Explanations.
2. Did you know it has a Movie after the Second Season? R2 isn't the true ending, there is more.
3. Lelouch is fking Hot, i would be gay for him
