The top ten anime tv series in Japan for the week of March 17th - March 23rd, 2008 are as follows:

1. Sazae-san
2. Chibi Maruko-chan
3. Detective Conan
4. One Piece
5. Yatterman
6. Gegege no Kitaro
7. Pokemon: Diamond & Pearl
8. Yes! Precure 5 GoGo!
9. Naruto: Shippuden
10. Mobile Suit Gundam 00

For those surprised by Shippuden's ratings, remember that throughout the almost two years of fillers, Naruto's ratings were usually much higher than this week's numbers. They only really started to drop near the end of the first series when they changed the day of the week it aired on and have modestly recovered since then.

They're all primetime (Golden hour) shows. Hardly the majority.

Those top 3 are Japanese classics that have been airing for like 20-30 years. It draws in crowds from people of all ages, hence its big popularity.

Given Shippuuden's track record, I'd even consider watching Pokemon over it. But yeah, I think the reason why its in the top 10 is b/c Japanese people probably hope against hope (like the rest of us here) that maybe one one these days, the anime will revert back to its old self....
