A new chapter of the Ginga Tetsudou 999 (Galaxy Express 999) manga was published for the first time in 11 years on the Leiji Matsumoto Mugen Souzou Kidou 80th Anniversary Chronicle (80th Anniversary Chronicle Railroad of Leiji Matsumoto's Infinite Creation) on Wednesday, a book to celebrate mangaka Leiji Matsumoto's 80th birthday anniversary.

Matsumoto began the Ginga Tetsudou 999 sci-fi manga series in Shounen Gahosha's Shounen King magazine, which ran for 18 volumes between 1977 and 1981. Fifteen years after the manga's final chapter, the story continued in Big Gold magazine in 1996, and ended in 2004 with seven volumes.

The series has been adapted to numerous anime adaptations. The first TV anime series, comprised of 113 episodes, was produced by Toei Animation and aired from September 1978 to April 1981. Its sequel, Sayonara Ginga Tetsudou 999: Andromeda Shuuchakueki (Adieu Galaxy Express 999) was screened in 1981 and won the Animage's Anime Grand Prix Award that year. In 1998, a featurette film was released, adapting the 1996 manga. The most recent anime adaptation of the series was shown in several Japanese planetariums in 2014.
