But it's important to remember that it was made by Brain's Base, and they make pretty much whatever they want.

They only make "what they want" if someone else fronts the money, and asks them to animate the project. It was also broadcast on noitaminA, and while the slot has aired sequels before it seems to favor new material over continuations, especially in the last year or so. Plus it's generally given sequels to major hits (Nodame, H&C).

Plus, the amount of money they are going to make from Penguindrum and Natsume s3/4 will be huge.

You mean the amount of money the production committee will make. We have no idea whether Brains Base is contracted at a flat fee regardless of sales success, or if they are getting a proportion of the total sales, what that proportion is.

Remember, animation studios generally are not the ones bankrolling anime, and thus not positioned to take the full rewards. That goes to the investors on the production committee (distributors, owners of music rights, etc). What success for a studio's shows will do is increase the studio's perceived value in the market, and lead to more project offers with higher budgets, allowing the studio to pick the most lucrative offers.

Brain's Base has been doing, mmm... better than most, but not top tier, is I guess how I'd put it. In terms of sales, I mean. 2011 has seen Enma-kun (flop), Natsume San (hit), Kamisama Dolls (uncertain; looked like a flop but has turned around since the midpoint, could do "okay-ish"). Last year saw Durarara!! (hit) and Kuragehime (flop).

As for Penguindrum, it peaked in preorder rankings very early on and has since fallen much lower. It's been almost entirely absent from the top 100 on Amazon lately. Now, it being two cour gives it a lot of time yet to turn things back around, but it's far from a guaranteed 10k smash hit right now, if that's what you mean.

*4, 101,172 *,101,172 Kuragehime vol.8

Now can we get our second season? I need it in my life like yesterday.

It sold like 700 copies a disc and, if I remember correctly, ratings were somewhat low for noitaminA. Anime can get sequels on low video sales, but when it's that low it's almost impossible that another season would be worth the cost. So, even if the first season boosted manga sales, there's no guarantee a second season would boost them considerably more. Diminishing returns, and all that.

Hooray for Kaminomi being up there. Hopefully they'll be convinced that they should make the 3rd season of the anime.

It's been on the charts for about a month now. It's obviously going to go lower in rank every week.

WTF @ Kimi ni Todoke. First week sales and it's almost 1 million? Good job I guess.

And BOW to Detective Conan. Yup. Keep shitting. :)

*6, *80,879 *,*80,879 Air Gear vol.33

Good to see Air Gear among the rankings. Now if the anime just started to catch up with the manga all would be good

I'm no longer surprised by Kimi ni Todoke's numbers, but it's still pretty impressive it can sell like that. And I'm happy to see Kuragehime made over 100,000 sales.

And, you know, I've heard about Baby Steps before. Maybe I should check it out one of these days.
