Imawa no Kuni no Alice is the only survival game story where I can actually feel invested into many characters. Lots of times, these "death game" stories involve a large volume of people, many of them who get introduced very quickly and don't have much of a personality. They might die soon, or stay for the ride for a certain amount of time. The fact that Imawa no Kuni no Alice has a pretty large host of characters, having some of them die, and them still having unique and developed personalities with dynamic thoughts and actions is definitely a feat that I have not seen

Story 8/10 It took me a while to write this review after reading the manga because it provoked so many clashing thoughts and emotions, that I had to take some time to think about it and sort it all out before putting anything into words. But here I go: While reading this, I kept thinking this story seemed like a combination of Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Your Name and Saw...meaning, similar narratives are out there. However, this story felt fresh and unique because of the logistics of the game (using cards to easily identify type of game and difficulty) and types of relationships and ... Jul 24, 2023
I'm a sucker for gaming/gambling manga, it's just a style I really enjoy, but they tend to have a few problems. Whether they focus too such on Mahjong, are unable to continue to up the ante, make the main character impossibly good at "games" so there's no risk of loss, or are too focused on the games to inject any plot outside of that.
So when I came to "Alice in Borderland" (as I'll call it) I was hesitant. It seemed to have all the same earmarks of previous works. With the characters appearing in an alternate Tokyo with out people, it ... Mar 15, 2022
Unlike most death games shows, animes, and mangas, I think that what differentiates Alice in Borderland from other death games mediums in an unseen-before way (at least in the animanga world), is that it delivers a clear story, driven entirely by the choices the characters go through with, whether those be right or wrong. Where lies the foreign in that? There exists very little to no bias towards the characters. The audience reading get a clear view of every story being presented in front of them, from the past and the present, which allows them to think freely and make decisions for themselves. Can they

Alice in Borderland is a thrilling Japanese sci-fi series that takes place in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, where the city is devoid of people except for a few survivors. The series follows the story of three friends - Arisu, Chota, and Karube, who suddenly find themselves in a deserted Tokyo where they are forced to play deadly games in order to survive.
The characters are complex and multifaceted, with each having their own unique backstory and motivations. Arisu is the main protagonist, who is intelligent and strategic, but also reckless and impulsive. Chota is the witty and sarcastic sidekick who provides much-needed comic relief in the midst ... This is a series that means much to me. It’s one of those series that changes and challenges you.
This is one of the best psychological manga I’ve read, and a great thriller too. The protagonist has great development and it inspires you. Great villains, great side characters, and just so many things I love. One thing I love the most is the side stories it has. There will be chapters where the MC isn’t the main focus, and all the side stories wrap up with one another into the main story beautifully... This story will suck you in. And it’s a ride worth riding. Apr 30, 2024
I almost cried reading the last chapters, this one hits hard if you're struggling in life.
I loved the "Stop overthinking everything for once and get a feel for it. Cast aside your existential crisis" part. Maybe for some it will sound cheesy, cliché or whatever, but as someone that has gone though some real crazy stuff in life, I can assure you those words are like a wake up call, just what some of us need to hear but refuse to with all of ourselves. Sometimes you just can't help but overthink everything, you were raised like that, life taught you some insane lessons, ... May 8, 2023
First off, this is one of the greatest manga I’ve ever read.
The story is compelling, tragic, action packed, draining, and survival. I have never felt so connected to a story like this. It’s a true masterpiece. “Play or die” genre is my favorite but this story takes it much rather than that. The tragedy is deep, it places you directly in each character seat. It draws you in as if you’re there with them. Nothing is off limits in the borderlands. I didn’t like the art style at first but it grew on me quickly as the story continued ... Nov 24, 2024
Well, I guess it was good enough for me to finish. The art is fine, good, nothing special but better than a lot of other stuff. The story itself, is a bit of a bumpy ride. It starts out very fast, and appears like it's going to be interesting, but then it sort of falls off and wanders for most of the rest of the series. I found that once the end was approaching, I was once again interested to see where the story was going to go. I think the mystery of the whole thing is it's biggest ally and will more than likely

imawa no kuni no alice, or alice in borderland, was NOT what i was expecting. like, literally AT ALL.
story, 9.5: what i thought would be a death game manga where friendship triumphs all challenges! turned out to be.. well, kinda true?? like i dont even really know, the more you read, the more that idea gets twisted, but never disappears. the further in you read, the topics that this series delves into go from "dont you wish you had an escape from your reality?" into "what is the point of life?" and "what is our purpose?" and all sorts of other complex questions. this complexity ... "Alice in Borderland," or as I like to call it, "The Ultimate 'What If Your Life Was Actually a High-Stakes Game?' Simulator," is not just a manga; it's a masterclass in how to blend psychological thrillers with a dash of existential dread, all while making you seriously question your own problem-solving skills.
The premise is simple yet profoundly compelling: What if, one day, you're whisked away to a parallel Tokyo where the only way to survive is by participating in deadly games? It's like someone looked at our mundane lives and thought, "Let's spice things up a bit," by turning the very fabric of existence into ... Oct 4, 2021
This concept is simply thrilling. The cruelty and genius with which the games are constructed just won't let you stop reading. Characters are vivid with interesting psychological portraits, thus make the games way more enjoyable and also dreaded for the reader.
Just like the protagonists, you as well will be haunted by the pressing question: "What's the answer?" And even though Ann offered an answer (while Mira offered another 10), I feel like there are as many answers as there are people in the Borderlands. Nothing is finite. Better live your life to the fullest, so you won't end up in that twisted place! Apr 17, 2021
This review will contain minimal spoilers for interested readers.
Story - 8/10: Death game style manga that for me felt like Gantz, Battle Royale, and Liar Game all mixed together. It takes a few chapters to ramp up but once it gets going, it's a wild ride to the finish. The world building is really done right here and helps to get you invested into the story as well. Art - 8/10: Art grows on you and does a great job at conveying the emotions of the moment. There are some great pages where the artist really flexes their artistic skills and some of the darker panels in ... Mar 25, 2021
The manga version of Alice in Borderlands is way better than the Netflix series.
You can actually go without watching the Netflix adaption due to it having too much filler & focusing too much screentime on scenes that weren't as pivotal in the manga. This manga is a mix of horror and psychology. It's worth the read :) Anyways! This is a great manga especially for readers who have a gamer background! ... Nov 8, 2020
Alice in Borderland is a manga I enjoyed reading. The question of why we live life is a wonderful and difficult theme. The answer the manga comes up with is avoiding the question entirely. As the answer is, it's different for everyone but life is ultimately valuable.
Arisu struggles with a lot of emotional issues and the solution for all of them is a girl. A girl that pathetically only exists as his motivation. The manga makes up for it by other female characters that make an impact, especially in the Side Stories. Arisu is very much a typical Seinen protagonist similar to Battle Royale, ... Jul 17, 2023
Reading through a lot of the critical reviews, I feel like one thing lacking for people to fully enjoy this work, is the understanding that it is a huge homage to "Alice in Wonderland", as the title as well as the character namings suggests. And hence, the work also calls for some understanding of the world of Alice in Wonderland.
As a fan of Liar Game and also all things Alice, I really enjoyed this and the references it brings. Yes, there are some plot holes, there are some events and games that are coincidences that are mere plot devices. But hey, does everything have ... Mar 2, 2024
Goated manga tbh. Maybe it's just that I havent read that many psychological thrillers or those death game show type of works, but this one was really enticing. The stakes being so high and stressful clashes with the simplicity and childness of the games, ahh it's so good. I also love how detailed everyone gets about the strategies and intellectual twists. like in a shonen or live action show, they'd just have an ass pull or give some contrived answer but here it gets so in depth i love ittt.
Theres plenty i don't care for. The philosophy of life is fine but it gets ... Apr 27, 2023
Alice I'm borderlands, well the name itself can give you an idea about the manga without reading the synopsis, basically story has began when our MC transported to a weird world that sounds intresting right ? Yeah it is so you gonna keep reading to reveal that mystery and eventually you not gonna like it probably why ? Not because I didn't moreover I think that all mystery needs something big like gonna blow my mind but unfortunately the end didn't satisfied me .
Our MC here was spineless & depressed person , and yeha perhaps at some point we saw development ... Previous - |
