Synopsis

Takao Kasuga is an unsociable middle school student who bears a love for books—in particular, Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal. He also has a crush on his class' idol, the sweet Nanako Saeki. In stark contrast to her, Sawa Nakamura is an insolent and unpleasant girl who lacks any concern for school.

One day, Takao forgets to bring his book home with him. He returns to school to retrieve it, but is stopped in his tracks when he finds Nanako's freshly worn gym clothes lying on the floor. A strange desire consumes Takao, and like a wicked pervert, he steals them.

With the guilt of his crime weighing on him, Takao tries his best to live a normal life. Sawa, however, who witnessed Takao's thievery, has other plans in store for him...

Background

Aku no Hana was published in English as The Flowers of Evil by Vertical Inc. from May 8, 2012 to October 14, 2014. The publisher has been rereleasing the series in omnibuses since October 31, 2017. It was published in Italian as I Fiori del Male - Aku no Hana by Panini Comics under the Planet Manga imprint from November 9, 2013 to February 7, 2015, and in Spanish as Las Flores del Mal by Norma Editorial from September 26, 2014 to July 22, 2016. It has been published in French as Les Fleurs Du Mal by ki-oon since January 12, 2017.

This is my first time writing a review for a manga, but I just want to put something out there:

No matter what, you have to endure the absolutely horrendous first few chapters - it will be worth it in the end.

The first time I started reading Aku no Hana, after eight chapters I gave it a score of 1 and decided to drop it completely. I was disgusted by it: the plot was horrible, the main character was unlikable and the art was horrendous. And yet a few months later, I was interested in it again. Why? This is more of a review of the entirety of the Author’s works than this manga but my rating is still for this.

The Author isn’t the best writer they aren’t very good at giving characters clear motives, and conclusions alot of his mangas start off addictive but inevitably end up trailing off into a haze of jumbled angst he also has trouble portraying certain things in a realistic light. Also he loves showing the pubescent nastiness of teenagers which makes me shiver way more than anything shown from junji ito personally.

Well this manga takes the cake - the epitome of making a mountain out of a molehill. The supposed coming-of-age story with depth somehow ended up being an obnoxious case of bipolar teens suffering from Stockholm syndrome.

Every character in Aku no Hana is unlikable and unrelatable. Aside from the fact that it’s difficult to wrap my head around why stealing gym clothes can turn into such a fiasco, but how does a middle school kid get bullied into succumbing to his fellow classmate and eventually developing an attachment to the said abuser is the main problem.
