This manga may very well be pure harem PEAK for me, and I genuinely don’t understand where ANY form of hate is coming from — well, unless if you don’t like the whole 17 year old girls falling in love with their older childhood friend who became their teacher premise; BUT BESIDES THAT, THIS IS PEAK.
This is a “pure harem” type of story — the mc gets presented a bunch of girls through some plot mechanic, and he eventually falls in love with one of them; this story isn’t indirect about its harem aspect nor does it introduce more and more girls to fall
...
in love with the mc later on in the story — this may seem like a “no duh” for many people, but it’s almost like the harem genre is drifting away from this kind of plotline for better or worse.
Now dissecting the plot, it’s a “standard” harem story where each character gets their respective introduction and exposition, but where this manga really pulls away is on how well each heroine is developed. Besides for one character, and that’s just me being harsh, each character gets a deep explanation for their motives and backstory while maintaining a humorous tone to the story.
There are some moments where some heroines do feel left out (mainly the short/shy girl), but they all provide a nice balance and contrast with one another. While one respective heroine is getting more development through a sub-arc, the other characters still play a massive role through their jokes or interactions. It’s hard to explain, but rarely do they feel forgotten or left out, which is ESSENTIAL for a harem story.
What was especially important was the mc’s involvement in each character’s backstory — there’s legitimate reasons on why the mc is so loved, and it isn’t forced because “we promised, dummy!” There may be some complaints with how archetypal or cliche the personalities of the heroines are, but it’s literally impossible to have a unique personality in a harem; rather, you should focus on how the author executes their personality and makes them larger-than-life (I haven’t used that phrase since my high school essay, wtf.), which the author did incredibly well via flashbacks and a delve into their thoughts/self-image.
I briefly talked about the mc, but when I say he is the HIGHLIGHT of this manga, I’m not kidding. We’re all fed up of the generic harem protagonists that blush at every contact, can’t hold a conversation for crap, etc, etc, you get the point. Those type of protagonists are just flat out annoying to read about. Well, this is literally the PERFECT protagonist. He has morals, humor, … humor, and humor. Okay, it’s a bit hard to explain but he’s basically a do-it-all type of protagonist, but he’s presented in a non-cringey or forced manner. Reminds me of the mcs from “Midnight Heart Tune” or “100…” which is an AMAZING comparison. Though, if I were to compare them, this mc would be on top due to his awareness of their feelings but also trying to keep some boundaries due to his morals.
Yes the plot is good, yes the characters are good, but how is the comedy? Well, I’m glad you asked, my schizophrenic self, the comedy is amazing! When I say that I have not smiled so much for so long while reading harem chapters, it’s an understatement. The jokes are original, and they aren’t cringe in the slightest. Even during “deep” moments, the manga somehow still maintains a light-hearted atmosphere by inserting a few jokes here and there while not ruining the mood. When the manga isn’t trying to be funny or deep, it’s just flat-out cute and wholesome, which is still a large portion of this manga.
The hate for this manga? UNJUSTIFIED! Besides for this manga’s non-inclusive premise of age-gap, every aspect of this manga should be a blueprint on a “how to” guide for a harem manga. Everything is balanced so well while still being engaging, funny, wholesome, and all of the above. Throw away your biases; so what if this manga is similar to this or that harem manga, or some characters may seem unoriginal, enjoy the greatness.
