Recommendations

This is a recommendation for the whole franchises, not just the first title in the series. Both are adaptations of visual novels by the same authors that centers around mystery with the same format of repeated alternative stories of the same event, each arc revealing different details that can help with solving the mystery and uncovering the truth when put together.

As the protagonist moves to a rural town/village, mysterious accidents start to happen and the source of these suppernatural killings needs to be found.

Ousama Game: Kigen / Origin was clearly heavily inspired by Higurashi, and with thankfully very little to do with its rather comical prequel/original. Definitely read it if you liked anything about Higurashi, as it's by far the most similar series to it. Psychotic waifu included. Kigen is set during 1977. Higurashi, 1983. Both are set in rural, isolated villages where supernatural-esque, gruesome murders start occuring. Very atmospheric and immersive.

Creepy stalker-girls strike fear into the hearts of men. DON'T LIE TO GIRLS, OR TALK TO GIRLS THAT ARE SITTING NEAR RUBBISH!!!!! Ibitsu could be compared to many of Higurashi's unhappy, disturbing offerings, but the ever increasing creepiness seen in the opening Higurashi arc as its lead desperately tries to escape from a girl following him with a sharp, not-so-friendly weapon probably best matches up.

Both Yuno and Rena are cute as hell. Yeah... As hell ;-). Both like to use deadly tools. And both have mental disorders.

Both manga series shares a similar feeling in which a young girl is involved in a tale of murders with thriller like sequences in a small town. They present a sense of horror, psychological sense, and a mystery life feeling. Both series' main male protagonist are also involved with the girl in various events. There is drama, violence, gore, and blood being shed.

Paranoia. Creepy mysterious killings. Who's responsible?

The protagonist is a newcome to a rural town/village, and just as he moves in, mysterious accidents start to happen so the group of students need to find the source of these supernatural killings.

Both are highly addictive murder mysteries with intriguing stories that keep you on the edge of your seat.

Secluded willage with the air of something off, the villagers seem to worhsip some obscure deity which leads to the horror parts of these manga.

Both series are set in the semi-supernatural world of a fragment not too far from the other's world. A group of people are forced to fight through a perilous situation. The intro for Hotarubi is a short story called The First and Last Gift, which is separate from the manga.

Both are the first saga (not arc) to start various series separated by parts that are of the horror genre and both are manga adaptations of another source, visual novel for Higurashi and net novel for Re:zero, there's also mystery elements in both of them involving a varied number of cute girls. Talking about the other similar aspect would be a spoiler for Higurashi tbh.

Both are about a dude who experiences a series of time loops where all his friends are killed off in rather gruesome ways. Lots of horrific and goofy deaths. Rather incompetent but still loveable protagonist. Multiple cute waifus.

Girl with mysterious background is involved with strange occurences, including a murder. Both series also have a storytelling structure that might be a bit confusing at first.

+ A repeated situation full of killing and gore + Very psychological and the stress of the situation the characters are in takes a heavy toll on them - Kill is about a large scale battle of humans vs. alien-like creatures while Higurashi is humans killing other humans and curses in a small village

Both have gorey-ish endings.
reportRecommended by HatchetGirl
Both have a male character surrounded by two females, and both have somewhat disturbing endings.

some wacky stuff goes on in a small village, trapping the protagonists. the further it goes, the crazier it gets. both are great sci-fi with gore. good looking male lead that doesn't play on your nerves with being the typical loser MC.

Both are horror/psychological. Demons, curses, blood, and cute girls start killing!

while reading the beginning to this manga, i got a total Higurashi vibe from it. It starts off showing us what's to come kinda, just like each higurashi manga starts. Then there's a student that mysteriously goes "missing" and a student who kinda replaces him. Kinda like Satoshi and Keichi. The manga's still new so i can't tell you much, but you should check it out.

Both are mystery (as well as many other genres) stories involving characters that travel across multiple timelines of similar situations. They involve seemingly normal groups of students, and the main female protagonists are "interesting" to say the least. Both use some comic relief, but are more centered on drama for the most part. They also have some supernatural aspects to the stories (though Higurashi's is to a much lesser extent especially early on). They are very psychological and delve deep into the minds of the main protagonists (Keiichi in Higurashi and Hoshino in HakoMari).

While they differ greatly in storyline they both have hidden much deeper meanings to their plot. Their stories mess with your head and answer some questions to their mysteries while at the same time adding even more mysteries along the way. They share similar themes and the most of the characters in both series have problems and/or psychological issues that they struggle with. They may come across as dark but they carry very meaningful messages hidden throughout their stories.

Their drawing style is similar and they are both horror mangas.
