A story full of "love" and "dreams," Tonikaku Kawaii follows Nasa. On the day of his high school entrance exams, Nasa encounters a beautiful girl and for him, it feels like destiny is finally calling out to him and telling that he will have a girlfriend, but...
Let me preface this by stating that this is my first review on MAL. I've done other reviews as u_menace on reddit so some of you may recognize me. Anyway, here's my sales pitch for this manga, as it deserves a hell of a good one! Please note that this review contains very minor spoilers (mostly pertaining to story design) but I've tried to keep it as spoiler free as possible!
Like vanilla romances?
Feel irritated by pointless drama?
Want to see what happens post-confession?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then this series is for you! Tonikaku Kawaii is a love
story that focuses on the relationship and romance that develops between both the male and female protagonists. They initially begin in a relationship, which quickly becomes a marriage and grows from there. This manga has a very positive vibe to it. It has some drama, but the drama is used in a way to enhance the story. Speaking of which lets break down the elements.
Story - 8
While the story's premise is simple, its executed in a very enjoyable manner, taking advantage of the simple but charming artwork, and the lovely dynamic that builds between Nasa (male protag) and Tsukasa (female protag). Add onto it tons of snappy dialogue and hilarious little surprises and you have a gem of a story. The story is mostly episodic in nature, which is a given considering the fact that the main couple is already together so if you're looking for something with a really really gripping story, this might not be your thing, but I'd still give a read for a feel good story from week to week!
Art - 9
The overall artwork takes on a simplistic nature, it's not particularly detailed, but no details are left out. You see what I did there?! What I mean by this is, all of the important things are drawn clearly and visibly, but not in an overly detailed manner. Each scene has just enough details for you to grasp what's going on. The focus is on the 'cute' designs of the characters, as opposed to manga that try to emphasize intricate beauty.
Character - 10
When I see 'Character' I think of 'Character traits/Character Development' and this is one department that I think this story truly excels in. The characters have a wonderful dynamic between them and slowly establish trust while growing as individuals. You might be used to your typically dense main male protag who doesn't know whats happening at all, well Nasa is 'dense' in a completely different sense, but he doesnt stay this way for long! In fact, this manga managed to capture the concept of 'denseness' and convert it into a charming attribute for the main character. Seriously, have a read and you'll see what I mean!
Enjoyment - 10
This is a subjective criteria, but whenever I read this manga it always puts a smile on my face. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I'm just grinning ear to ear, but this story brings me a little dose of happiness every week. If that's not what defines enjoyment, I dont know what does! In my 25 years of living, I'm privileged to be able to read such a simple but charming romance story.
Overall - 9
I'd say the weakest aspect of Tonikaku Kawaii is the limited number of plotlines to explore. Outside of the mysterious past of our story's bride, not much else is really worth exploring. But if that's the biggest weakness this story has, I'd gladly take it, especially when its countered by the fact that the focus of this story is on the development of love between a couple with hilariously conflicting, but synergistic personalities.
This is an underrated romance that deserves more attention. Forget the thrill of the chase, this is all about the thrill of discovering new things to love about the person whose brought new meaning to your life.
This is probably one of the cutest romcom manga out there.
No drama BS, no stupid cliches, no massively dense character, no school romance, no NTR (so far) just about vanilla romance from day 1 with tons of sweet, cute, comedic, and heartwarming scenes. This is just the perfect manga for all romcom fans like me. Each chapter is just like a complete healing from stressful, lonely everyday life.
One thing i'm worrying is that the story might be going into fantasy-fictional direction in the future so i hope the writers won't ruin the slice of life elements in it.
If you are a fan of Hata Kenjiro's works, then you will probably like this. A short summary if you don't want to keep reading this review would be; it's everything I wanted Hayate to become.
The jokes that are usually present in all of Hata-sensei's works are present here. I'm enjoying this new work from him a lot since it flows much better than the later parts of Hayate and is way more coherent while maintaining the classic comedy style that we come to expect from Hata-sensei.
The mood that is set is relaxed and fluffy at times, while being comedic at others and it makes
for a pleasant romcom to read. I'm excited to read as chapters are released and I hope that you will give Tonikaku Kawaii a try too.
Vanilla romances, heartwarming, comforable moments... these are what I can found from this manga. Being written by the same author as Hayate the combat butler but directed in a different way, I can surely see how he transfer his talent from the previous work to this new installment. The character designs are similar but way more smoothier and loverlier than before, while lovely story stirs up the enjoyment of each chapter. My soul is healed after every chapter I read. Highly reccommend to people who like slice of life like K On, Yuru camp, Hyouka, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! but also
want serious relationships and comedy like Toradora.
