Let me preface this by stating that this is my first review on MAL. I've done other reviews as u_menace on reddit so some of you may recognize me. Anyway, here's my sales pitch for this manga, as it deserves a hell of a good one! Please note that this review contains very minor spoilers (mostly pertaining to story design) but I've tried to keep it as spoiler free as possible!
Like vanilla romances?
Feel irritated by pointless drama?
Want to see what happens post-confession?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then this series is for you! Tonikaku Kawaii is a love
story that focuses on the relationship and romance that develops between both the male and female protagonists. They initially begin in a relationship, which quickly becomes a marriage and grows from there. This manga has a very positive vibe to it. It has some drama, but the drama is used in a way to enhance the story. Speaking of which lets break down the elements.
Story - 8
While the story's premise is simple, its executed in a very enjoyable manner, taking advantage of the simple but charming artwork, and the lovely dynamic that builds between Nasa (male protag) and Tsukasa (female protag). Add onto it tons of snappy dialogue and hilarious little surprises and you have a gem of a story. The story is mostly episodic in nature, which is a given considering the fact that the main couple is already together so if you're looking for something with a really really gripping story, this might not be your thing, but I'd still give a read for a feel good story from week to week!
Art - 9
The overall artwork takes on a simplistic nature, it's not particularly detailed, but no details are left out. You see what I did there?! What I mean by this is, all of the important things are drawn clearly and visibly, but not in an overly detailed manner. Each scene has just enough details for you to grasp what's going on. The focus is on the 'cute' designs of the characters, as opposed to manga that try to emphasize intricate beauty.
Character - 10
When I see 'Character' I think of 'Character traits/Character Development' and this is one department that I think this story truly excels in. The characters have a wonderful dynamic between them and slowly establish trust while growing as individuals. You might be used to your typically dense main male protag who doesn't know whats happening at all, well Nasa is 'dense' in a completely different sense, but he doesnt stay this way for long! In fact, this manga managed to capture the concept of 'denseness' and convert it into a charming attribute for the main character. Seriously, have a read and you'll see what I mean!
Enjoyment - 10
This is a subjective criteria, but whenever I read this manga it always puts a smile on my face. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I'm just grinning ear to ear, but this story brings me a little dose of happiness every week. If that's not what defines enjoyment, I dont know what does! In my 25 years of living, I'm privileged to be able to read such a simple but charming romance story.
Overall - 9
I'd say the weakest aspect of Tonikaku Kawaii is the limited number of plotlines to explore. Outside of the mysterious past of our story's bride, not much else is really worth exploring. But if that's the biggest weakness this story has, I'd gladly take it, especially when its countered by the fact that the focus of this story is on the development of love between a couple with hilariously conflicting, but synergistic personalities.
This is an underrated romance that deserves more attention. Forget the thrill of the chase, this is all about the thrill of discovering new things to love about the person whose brought new meaning to your life.
This is probably one of the cutest romcom manga out there.
No drama BS, no stupid cliches, no massively dense character, no school romance, no NTR (so far) just about vanilla romance from day 1 with tons of sweet, cute, comedic, and heartwarming scenes. This is just the perfect manga for all romcom fans like me. Each chapter is just like a complete healing from stressful, lonely everyday life.
One thing i'm worrying is that the story might be going into fantasy-fictional direction in the future so i hope the writers won't ruin the slice of life elements in it.
If you are a fan of Hata Kenjiro's works, then you will probably like this. A short summary if you don't want to keep reading this review would be; it's everything I wanted Hayate to become.
The jokes that are usually present in all of Hata-sensei's works are present here. I'm enjoying this new work from him a lot since it flows much better than the later parts of Hayate and is way more coherent while maintaining the classic comedy style that we come to expect from Hata-sensei.
The mood that is set is relaxed and fluffy at times, while being comedic at others and it makes
for a pleasant romcom to read. I'm excited to read as chapters are released and I hope that you will give Tonikaku Kawaii a try too.
Vanilla romances, heartwarming, comforable moments... these are what I can found from this manga. Being written by the same author as Hayate the combat butler but directed in a different way, I can surely see how he transfer his talent from the previous work to this new installment. The character designs are similar but way more smoothier and loverlier than before, while lovely story stirs up the enjoyment of each chapter. My soul is healed after every chapter I read. Highly reccommend to people who like slice of life like K On, Yuru camp, Hyouka, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! but also
want serious relationships and comedy like Toradora.
I know i know, it's too early to rate this and 10 might just too good. BUT from creator of Hayate no Gotoku i know a thing or two about his style (sadly watched only anime but soon will read manga so no bigie). And you know what? It's comedy romance and shounen goddammit and I completely agree, comedy F*$k YEAH it's original, well thought threw, doesn't get on my nerves and finally it's modern, on a side note many mangakas are like office workers, grey and copy}paste things and throw a bunch of cliche moments until you vomit blood.
Here i see
a truly pure comedy with ORIGINALITY. Next we have romance and boy he has plenty of it mixing it up with shounen (started to hate shounen recently but damn my opinion changed 180*). We have here a true ROMCOM a masterpiece you don't have to put crappy run down cliche moments here in order to make it look like manga, this author even manages to sarcastically smirk on other mangakas.
Story is la fantastich (Yeah my french and german suck) anyhow, be ready for some dramatic moments when this puffy romcom turns on you and smacks you with FEELS TRAIN. <---- Pure speculation, forgive me senpai.
Why not 10, well characters are a bit bland but nevertheless they are great next we have background and attention to details, AMAZING to draw the details and background one has to have a truly artistic talent. Now that i think about it if characters are not so detailed as other things, because it is easier to empathize with them (true story the more complex character drawing the less we see them as ourselves i.e. harder to empathize with them). And last but not least panels and dialogue bubbles (monologue;inner thought;authors remarks) PLACEMENT is great easy to read easy to understand!
Every goddam chapter i learn something new about them, MC is incredible and never ceases to amaze me his wife is a mystery yet little by little we start to uncover her personality, supporting characters some are goofy some are dense but they really spice up this manga they are not seen as nuisance or something to place in order to have a mob, no they have their own mystery and life going on for them. Basically what i'm saying is that the great author thought through about character creation....unlike some a holes who copy;paste;cash machine;dried up;abrupt ending.
Enjoying the moment from chapter 1 till chapter 41 AND EVEN WITHOUT THE DRAMA COMMON give this author a cookie. Usually in order for manga not to get boring you need to input challenges, drama, tragedy and etc. no I'm not saying there won't be any i'm stating that author made so good that it wasn't needed.
All in all i'm saying it's like watching rick and morty (or think about any other analogue) i watch how characters life unfolds without needing them to be hurt. I don't need it to be Santa Barbara (never watched it but remember that family tv was occupied by matriarchal council and had seen a few glimpses of this cringy drama while my cartoons were regarded as trash compared to SB) in order to engulf myself and not get bored. And finally it's EASY to enjoy (believe me not an easy statement)
Yes 10 for now, I may return and change it in the future but for now 10 no less. Would i advice someone to read YEZZZ PLEAZEE! Drama seekers run away this wall of pure ROMCOM will not satisfy your sadistic urges (maybe a little but in the future).
To some, 66 chapters might be way too early to give it a 10/10 rating but I'm rating it as myself at the current chapters.
Story and Character development is on point comforting and light-hearted. Literally cute is the best description of this manga. Every interaction between the 2 protag draws me in and finding myself cheering for them. Hoping the nothing will come between them in the later chapters.
The female protag is shrouded with a familiar Japanese mythology vibe. Those who are familiar with Kaguya or Tsukuyomi will no doubt draw the same opinion. However, as we all know Kaguya was never married
but in this game, Tsukasa did. We may not know what twist the mangaka may have in store for us but here's me hoping it'll not be dramatic or NTR.
I hope the mangaka realizes that most readers who are attracted to this manga are here to find a no drama, no NTR, light-hearted slice of life story to indulge in. Dramas and NTRs are dime a dozen.
As of now, 66 chapters in, if you are looking for a fun, cheerful romcom manga. Then I can assure you that you're in for a good time.
In my opinion, the best combination of words describing this work is "comforting." The story boasts an incredible charm, and adopts a storyline of romance not much seen in popular history, for the beginning of conversation we are not talking about "children" (although the main character's wife is 16 years old...) but rather a young adult, which by itself already Makes the story more acceptable. Of Course the plot is not perfect, after all it is not every day that a beautiful girl appears in front of you, saves you from imminent death and propose marriage, all in the course of a few hours, but
as we are talking about manga does not have the reason to stick to reality , and that is precisely why I believe that the story works so well, because we know that something like this would not happen to us but still if we see our protagonist in this situation, it is impossible not to let a smile drop. Believe me I spent a whole afternoon of Saturday following this work, and when I arrived in the last chapter Published, I felt empty, was so invested in the plot that I had forgotten that "lived in the real world". The characters are all amazing and with a great dynamic. Our protagonist is literally a genius who possesses answers to everything, he is optimistic and always puts the welfare of others above himself. In against departure We know very little of his wife. Although to what it all indicates there will be a big turnaround soon (my theories are that she is immortal... but we will not touch this subject now). To summarize, this is a series of romance that I will remember for a long time. The step is excellent and the scenes of romance are at the point. I look forward to seeing what the author will bring us next.
