Time to somehow wrap everything up in one episode.

Ren disappeared from Sumireko's sight. Before returning to her original world, Oto visited Uname-sensei's house to make a request. On the day she took the train, she returned to Kisaragi Station, where the Cat General appeared. Although Ren tried to intervene, Oto remembered a truth she had forgotten for ten years during her conversation with the Cat General. As she made her way to the platform, Oto hesitantly spoke to "the strange monster called Ren Adashino."

Damn did they speedrun this ending lmaooo. Though in the end I'm glad Sumireko finished her book or new work or whatever it is. And it's clear that Oto is happy, and while it's a sort of happy ending, the story isn't over yet. The conclusion isn't very clear-cut, but it fits the mysterious nature of this work. I feel like from what I had remembered reading of the manga, it was the better experience, so I would recommend you reading the manga anyday. Will miss my weekly dose of Sumireko and that OP and ED. They fucking slap.

I had high hopes for this, seeing as it was like Dark Gathering, but it couldn't be more different than it. This is neither bad nor good.

Not even the ecchi, which was the main selling point was that good. Unless you count that banger of an OP that has ecchi all over it, then yes lmao.

Ren goes speechless in Kisaragi Station; Sumireko has completed her novel but wants Ren to read before he goes, and Oto is residing together with Uname-sensei for the time being. However, it's clear that both girls are deeply worried about him, and the old man seeks him to clear things up, especially in regard to the Cat General, and him bringing her home to where she came from. Having the Cat General doesn't make things easy for Ren since she's the progenitor of the Curiosities, and getting both him and his sister out is the only way to stop the mysterious happenings from happening further.

The train ride back for both siblings, Oto goes first, begrudgingly knowing that she wasn't his real brother to begin with as Ren fades into the background. Instead, the REAL Ren is the Old Man of Time and Space, as Oto left behind a video recording of herself enjoying life together with Sumireko, left with Uname-sensei. And said woman finding her way to the old bookstore as she hands her novel to the bookstore clerk, only to get the feedback that the undecided ending is ironically tied to Ren and his fate of being the hero that never got to read the heroine's novel.

Forget Dark Gathering, this show doesn't come close to the levels of the former.

this show was not good guys...
i wanted to like it but god damn, they couldn't commit to anything nor deliver on any part

please tell me why Oto NEEDED to go back. Oh right, there was no reason. she literally has friends here, goes to school, has a place to live (could easily stay at the teacher's or ogawa's but they always let her go sleep in the subway for some reason) but no, lets throw it all away to go back to... starving during a war and being dead? huh?

and then eyes comes back anyway so who cares

ogawa is just such a waste, the show loves being like "wow these oppai sure are dekai sugoi huh?!?!?" but then literally nothing happens and we never even get a cowprint bikini or anything, and then you remember Ogawa's tits were the only reason you put up with this garbage anyway, but they couldn't even give you that

the ghosts and events weren't cool, Ogawa's personality is lame, and its just forgettable (tits aside)

solid 4/10, thank god this wont get an S2

The OP is great tho, started following the artist because of it.

Well… that was certainly an ending lol, such a shame it feels so rushed. Most of this final episode had a pretty good pace but the last 5 minutes or so felt like I hopped on the train with Oto and we were flying, and not only that, it wasn’t satisfying either. Oto had her heartfelt goodbye and leaves, with Adashino fading away after all, but later Sumireko somehow finds that ghost bookstore again and lets Honhime read her book (I did like this part) and after that Asahino just comes back because he tied himself to the world with regrets, and Oto is just gone despite that she had a happy life here and who knows where the hell she was just sent back to, I know the after credits scene lets us know she’s alright but it still doesn’t feel right, I will say tho I did like Adashino’s reaction to Sumireko shutting down his dream of bathing with her right after he came back lol, that scene was so rushed but there was at least something good there.

And that was it, unfortunately lol, man it really hurts because overall I really liked this show despite the censorship I heard about early on and this rushed ending. It wasn’t quite the Dark Gathering-ish spooky mystery anime I wanted it to be but it was still fun and had its share of spooky moments, not to mention the beautiful babe Sumireko who was definitely one of the best parts of the show, it’s just a shame more wasn’t done with her massive mammaries, but I’m guessing the manga rectifies that so it is definitely one I plan to check out in the future not only for that, but also because of this ending.

Two things they absolutely didn’t miss with tho was the OP and ED, both bangers with some very cool visuals, both were favorites of mine this season. And I guess now I look forward to either checking out the manga or whatever mystery anime with a touch of horror comes next, or preferably a full blown horror anime because I need one lol.

Man I’m gonna miss these characters so much. I loved this show, but this finale was a little odd?

I still don’t really understand what happened with Occhan and why she had to go back if she has an established friend group and is happy in this world? And then what’s the point of Ren disappearing and telling the Cat emperor he won’t be solving anymore cases if he comes right back thanks to Sumireko lol? Also no Erika in the finale 😭

And are we ever gonna find out why Occhan dresses like that as an elementary school student lmaoo. Yea the tummy crop top is clearly plot relevant

Even though it was messy, still enjoyed this episode on the whole. Occhan’s farewell video to Sumireko broke me, she looked up to her like an older sister, why tf did they split them up. I knew ren was something more than human, but I didn’t expect him to be a curiosity himself and given form by Occhan.. but then did Rin’s brother have sight too or how did he get this special eyes?

It was nice seeing the bookstore and the book lady again, nice way to tie in that flashback episode and of course bring Ren back. “I need you Adashino Kun” “I won’t bathe with you” 😭 yea that’s the banter we’ve come to love and expect from these two. Crazy finale but if you think about it, really was a microcosm of the show. Wacky, emotional and just fun. I’ll be reading the manga for sure.

Hopefully Occhan does come back some day since they talked about her walking in and buying Sumireko’s book some day 🙏🏾

So Ren was a curiosity but I wonder if so was Oto as in the beginning they showed a girl that looked like her starving to death presumably in year 1945 as that's what the ticket she received showed. Speaking of Oto, I wonder where she's going, assuming she is also a curiosity I'm guessing to some type of afterlife but Ren alluded to the fact that Oto may someday return to buy Sumireko's book. Cat girl was briefly shown in the bookstore and she knows Ren is back.

While I somewhat enjoyed this show and the weird but sometimes funny/silly moments, like Sumireko pleading for Ren to come back but refusing to bathe with him (ha), the ending left me with questions. Maybe one day I'll read the manga but I'll give this a 7/10 since it was somewhat unique and had some fanservice.

Apparently a lot of people based their expectations on something called Dark Gathering, of which I know nothing. Personally a liked this, liked the main characters, the music, good little stories, a bit surreal, not 100% serious. It was GOOD and worth 7/10.

Damn Oto really left. Is she ever coming back? Glad Ren's back though but Sumireko still won't take a bath with him lmao. Sumireko finally got to give her book to hon hime too.

Pretty decent stuff and I mostly liked the cases but what had me most invested in this was the characters, mainly Sumireko. Like I can watch her just do stuff for another 100 episodes and not get bored. Neko girl, Shizuki and the others are nice too. Hopefully a new season someday.

Expecting something like Dark Gathering before watching this makes sense but the first few episodes or even just the first episode was a clear indication that this was gonna be nothing like that as this was missing the horror theme of the former. So you had plenty of time to drop this but you didn't and watched it to the end and still comparing it to Dark Gathering after watching 12 episodes is just dumb. Might as well compare it to any anime of the same genre and say this was nothing like that.

The censorship and bizarre changes just left an extremely sour taste in my mouth as a fan of the source material. It got so bad I just stopped participating in discussion for this series past the first few episodes. Zero reason not to just be faithful.
Regardless of the typical kneejerk, snobbish "it wasn't anything special" sentiments for the source material manga whenever these kinds of complaints are aired, this was just an utterly demeaning and disrespectful adaptation all around save for the OP and ED songs. I guess that's the norm for ecchi series these days unless you're way over the top.

That was a rather anticlimactic ending. It looks like they went out of their way to not adapt the Cat's Family arc, but still managed to include some scenes with the Cat General anyway. The opening scene was their way of adapting Ch. 54, pages 10 and 11
The brief conversation between the old man and Sumireko was in chapter 42 while Oto's goodbye video was a reinterpretation of a scene from chapter 41. That last scene where Sumireko confessed that she needed Ren felt like they were adapting the last part of Chapter 55, its too bad we didn't get that kiss scene as an indication of progress between the two of them.

This anime should have ended after the Shrine Princess arc which was two episodes ago and I wish they didn't have to cherry pic random scenes from the manga to stretch things out with an anime original ending. Perhaps its best to read the manga from the beginning because it does has its dark moments as a supernatural thriller series.

Ren and Oto or just Oto? My understanding was that Oto - the Oto we see throughout the series, is the only Oto there ever was. The same one featured in the flashback at the beginning of this episode. A former human who died at the tail end of WWII from starvation/malnutrition and became a wandering ghost or spirit. Her older brother Ren then also died shortly after cremating her body and presumably passed on to the afterlife or whatever realm awaits the dead. That is not the Ren we see throughout the series. Our Ren was never a human. Just a spirit who Oto inadvertently gave form to when she cried out his name, calling for her brother in the darkness.

He is a random spirit who was maybe just some spiritual essence or energy with no definitive form before that became fashioned in her brother's likeness and took his name because of what she envisioned in the darkness. I assume because she was lonely and afraid wandering on the path to the afterlife realm (we don't know how much time passed between their deaths, but it would make sense that he wasn't with her and she'd be afraid since she died first and he could have died days or weeks later or time in that transitory realm could be anything imaginable anyway). Then she takes on a false memory that he actually was her brother all along, "for the past 10 years", as she says (assume that's how long they've been on modern Earth). Our Ren is a pure Curiosity. The "real" Ren might have already been living happily and securely in the afterlife for many decades now (if time is even a thing there and functions the same way), wondering where the hell she is. As far as we know he never wandered and just went straight there.

My interpretation is just going based off of what was depicted in the anime series, so I'm not sure if you're referring to something that was different in the web manga source. I can't account for that, but just impression after watching the anime.

@WatchTillTandava I was referring to chapter 54, pages 10-11 because that's were the flashback scene in the anime came from. You're right that the Ren from the past is different from the Ren we know right now and it was hinted that Ren we know is a Curiosity himself while Oto was a wandering spirit. I forgot to mention that in my original post.

Awwwww the ending was really bittersweet imo I wish we got to learn more about Oto’s hometown and more about the cat girl but hey at least it’s hinted that Oto was the one who left the book (since in her past life she was buried with the glutton book) and that Adashino is alive and back working with Sumireko bro deserves to be happy considering for most of the entire show bro has been suffering since Sumireko got ahold of that book that turns her younger. Bittersweet ending with a side of tears is what came over me during this episode🥹🥲

When Oto started crying bc she has never once thanked Sumireko for saving the day during the times they were together working on a cases and stuff, that part legit had me in tears Oto one of the most sweetest kindest anime characters I’ve ever seen in recent times and it hurt my heart so much seeing her in pain crying bc she’s never gonna see Sumireko ever again☹️☹️

Also I’d like to add that it’s actually really sad to me that Oto won’t ever see Nodoka ever again those 2 were meant for each other man this ending is just so sad to me bc Oto deserves all the happiness in the world bc she’s one of the nicest anime character in animanga I’ll miss her and her cutesy adorable voice☹️🥺☹️😢💜

Overall 8/10
Personal Score 9/10 ILL MISS YOU OTO!!!😩

It really is like they followed up with the story of "Grave of the Fireflies". Well at least Oto can return to where her real brother is supposed to be, where they should've been together in.

Really interesting manga-based anime overall, so time to read the manga now.

P.S.
Regarding Suzu, it would've been crazy if Suzu was voiced by Uname-sensei's voice actress, Horie Yui, instead. Horie Yui voiced Hanekawa in the Monogatari series animes and Hanekawa has also a form of bakeneko. On the other hand, Suzu was voiced by Saitou Chiwa, the voice actress of Senjougahara (Araragi's main 😆)

I have mixed feelings about this anime. It starts well, peaks in the middle, but falls off significantly in some episodes. It feels like they tried to be a sort of "Dark Gathering" by censoring fanservice, but still provided little information or didn't focus much on the main plot.

In this last episode, it seemed like they tried to condense what couldn't be explained in the previous one. Additionally, it appears to be an original ending. They left many questions about the cat girl and the spacetime man unanswered.

It's not a bad anime, but it could have been better. That said, I didn't like the ending because Ren won't be able to bathe with Sumireko.

I'm confused about oto. she died, cremated by her brother, while dying calling her brother name to something that made it the current ren?

after that oto was transported to the current world, instead of afterlife.

what's the train final destination? is it afterlife or her previous world? she already dead there right? will she come back alive again if she go back to the previous world?

Decent ending. Not fantastic.

lol that 180 turn from serious pre credit ending to Sumireko's "I need you...I'm not taking a bath with you, though" and Ren's shock and disappointment xD

I am kind of confused as to how this Ren was created. Was it that Oto-chan was looking for him after she died but he had yet to die so they couldn't meet up in the afterlife but then why was something new created not her brother hear her cries?

I quite enjoyed this show but I feel it could be better than it is. Might check out the manga some to see how much it differs.
