This isn’t a hate post or anything. I love this anime and it’s a 10 but I’m trying to figure out why? For you what makes Frieren so special and beautiful. For me a big part of it is its background music, it contributes so much to the mood and enhances my experience when watching. What do you think makes it so good?

The atmosphere in this show is top notch. It quickly brings you into the world and holds you close in a soft embrace. It’s a very magical feeling.

Then throw in interesting characters, a fascinating story, a cool magic system, phenomenal animation, lovely music, a great art style, and you got yourself a very special anime.

It’s fantasy that feels real. The tones of regret, grief, appreciation, the moments of goofiness—-they way they’ve done it hits just right no matter the viewers age. They’ve made me feel like I can relate to a millennia old elven mage somehow. Doesn’t make sense but here we are.

What I think what makes this story so great is how it tackles the essence of life, the importance of cherishing the people who are dear to you, cherishing the moments you spend with the people who are dear to you and the heartbreaking reality that every entity has a different passing of time.

I think it tackles such simple and yet profound themes that everyone experiences in life: dealing with loss, cherishing the time you spend with the people you love, etc. Its so real and yet at the same time it’s presented in this beautiful fantasy world that is so far removed from our reality. And yet the themes of life in that world are the same as the human experience here.

Obviously, the fantastic animation and music only enhances the things that make Freiren so great. It truly is one of the most complete anime I’ve watched so far

Let me start off by saying I love Kinos Journey, haibane renmei and mushishi. Those three are the same as freiren in structure with the episodic and philosophical touch to it. I think Freirein is an 8.4 out of 10. I’ve watched 13 eps and have seen nothing special so far and it does not deserve to be rated a 9.15 average out of 10. The characters are a bit bland. People say it deals with profound ideas but I have seen none of that so far. It’s a good fantasy and nice to watch to relax or if your in the mood. It has some very good ost and good animation too. I think the story is too weak for it to enter high eight to nine.

I would say it is the same thing that makes Mushoku Tensei good, despite all the negative opinions about it. The world-building and atmosphere are brilliant; they convey the emotions of the characters really well. The world truly pulls you in, and for those who have seen Mushoku Tensei, you know what I mean.

In Frieren, the way her character is explored—being a being that has lived for centuries—and the use of flashbacks that she remembers when in a similar situation pull you into her genuine desire to know people. It does so, leaving a feeling of melancholy as the event occurs. With all this, in addition to the insanely fluent animation, music, and voice actors, it's not hard to see why Frieren is nothing short of excellent.

It has been perfect in every single aspect so far IMO.

The story and the characters are the best of the series. It is very well written and characters feel human and realistic.

Madhouse has done an incredible job of enhancing the source material with outstanding and consistent animation/art.

Evan Call's soundtrack is wonderful and it fits the scenes perfectly.

It's a fantastic anime due to its unique approach to storytelling and exploration of themes like mortality, friendship, and the passage of time. The series beautifully depicts the life of an immortal being experiencing the world's fleeting nature through the eyes of Frieren, an elf who observes her human companions' aging and mortality. The anime's emotional depth, coupled with its stunning visuals and character development, creates a profound and thought-provoking viewing experience. Moreover the music is amazing

Two aspects that help Frieren stand out are its worldbuilding and storytelling, the same two aspects that make Mushoku Tensei a phenomenal anime as someone said above.

From its worldbuilding, you have a vast continent split into three sections all filled with various culture and people going about their daily lives and an ACTUALLY interesting magic system in high fantasy that not only includes offensive and defensive magic but also the peaceful magic with variations such as magic for turning grapes sweet to sour or magic that helps remove rust from copper statues. Magic for war, magic for peace, and also the music helps in immersing the audience with the world and magic.

From its storytelling, there's the initial premise that takes a different approach to your typical demon king story which is after the ordeal. The dynamic of the characters feels natural and authentic, such as Stark and Fern only just being adults but having a sort of fun and cute chemistry to them while Frieren is notably changing as she learns more about empathy and the appreciation of the people around her. How the storytelling takes its approach as an adventurous slice of life after the demon king's subjugation, it feels nostalgic and tender and helps to flesh our characters out as they continue and see all kinds of life around them in different places. Thematically, it also does a good job incorporating messages in each episode with things like memory, the value of connection, times of peace, the weight of time, so on so forth.

"You fought to the end. You survived. That's why you're here now. I think that's something you should be more proud of."

The only great thing about Frieren is its post-war worldbuilding through the mc's past journey. I found that quite original. Everything else is just okay.

It is a combination of good …
- background / main story
- life message / lessons
- main / background characters
- serious / humorous dialogue
- interactions / action
- background art / effects / animation
- background / main sound
- intro / outro songs & soundtrack
… it covers all the bases well

It is not my favorite anime this season or even what I consider the best / #1 anime, but the people have spoken

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I do have to agree with others that it feels like a flawless production; story, music, sound effects & animation are all very well done. It’s well balanced.

That being said, I think it’s really really good, but I also don’t feel anything special that makes it specifically stand out to me ?? So I agree with you.
I gave it an 8 so far

I thought it was going to be an overrated anime, but I was 100% wrong & I honestly prefer it more than FMA: Brotherhood which is another masterpiece.

I think it’s also the simplicity, I’m into fantasy anime’s, but if there’s to much happening I lose my interest, so having a simple and yet very good anime makes me give it a 10!!

I have a quote from my favorite game critic's Elden Ring review, which is perfectly applicable to Frieren as well in my opinion.

"Elden Ring presents itself in such a simple and bare manner, that it couldn't pretend like it's better than it actually is, even if it wanted to. It doesn't need to, since it is a mastercraft on the level of the deepest fundamentals of the medium."

Almost everything about the show is just so simple. It's almost like it doesn't even try to be engaging. Yet the writing of the characters, dialogues, and scenarios, together with the amount of care it's getting from Madhouse, makes it such a fundamentally great package that it doesn't even really need superficial elements to make it captivating.

I wouldn't get stuck in the mindset of why people think It's a 10. For me, it's perhaps not a 10 by my standards but it is consistent with its quality of storytelling. Every main or support character feels unique and the dialogue is entertaining and immersive.

For once: It doesn't butcher fantasy worlds until they are more a parody / ruin of the high fantasy subgenre like a lot of isekais do.
Although I wouldn't say it "saved" that kind of fantasy in anime as you can read sometimes. There are some more recent works like Somali and the Forest Spirit that are awesome creating their fantasy world, but it's fairly unknown.

Also the anime portrays Frieren's view on short lives in more depth and actually does something with her being an elf, more than giving her pointy ears and that's it. If Tolkien saw the average "cute anime elf", I guess he would cry lol.
Frieren at least puts effort and emotions into her being an elf and having an immensely long lifespan. Although I think the trope of "immortality makes you stoic" getting old itself, unlike Frieren lol.

To me, it’s how the “time” is represented through the story and between the characters. Specially from Frieren’s point of view.

If you think about, It doesn’t spend our time with dumb fights and non-sense dialogs… only the part that matters most is shared.

And of course, the characters and the storyline are great.

The way it utilizes the slice of life genre to its fullest extent without making it feel like a waste of time is what makes it gr8. As someone who hates slice of life anime, this one reminded me that there are always exceptions to the rule.

I don’t think it deserves the score it has. It’s a good anime, but it has little purpose in terms of a real story, average characters and themes that I’ve seen lots before, and nothing overly interesting to keep me hooked. I’d say it’s an 8 but certainly not a 9 or 10 from what I’ve seen.
