As the vast majority of you reading this post —Ghibli fans, I do strongly hope—, will be in tune with this hot affair: the upcoming release of the last feature film of the Studio Ghibli animation genius Hayao Miyazaki next July 14th (Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru Ka?, How Do You Live?). Right, being realistic, this fact is sth which happens once in a blue moon, but there's another hint to underline about that, which makes it more unique itself: up to less than a month to the release of the movie in Japanese theaters we do know nothing about it, we have seen scarcely nothing about it.
Hayao Miyazaki is already 82 years old, what is not a walk in the park concretly. Althought he's attempted to retire from cinema production in numerous times, he unavoidably gets involved in other production after other. The key: his next work —and, it's a pity to acknowledge, we're dealing with his last big work—, is an absolute mistery. We do know barely about its plot, characters and narrative. It has been through six years of development. In spite of the fact that we can behold the film poster from the distribuitor Toho (who's aimed to release the movie in Japanese theaters), it's has been announced there won't be any trailer, press statement or promotional pics.
Exclusively it has been stated that the feature film would be "a movie of fantasy with a youthful perspective", and thus (from the title as well) we can suspect that the film itself it's an adaptation or, at least an allusion, to the youthful novel from Genzaburo Yoshino written in 1937. The manga adaptation of this novel, that saw the light in 2018, made its great debut in Japan selling more than 2 million of copies. However, what's due to the silence that surrounds the release of the Miyazaki's last masterpice? Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli producer tells in an interview with Bungei Shuju: "An American movie which is released simultaneously this summer with How do you live? launched three trailers. When you watch them, you notice everything is gonna happen in the film. I want to do the opposite exactly". Therefore, Studio Ghibli aims to keep apart from the industry, as it has been doing from decades back, and surprise its public with the magic of cinema.
Now, I want you to wonder what can we expect of this film. What way do you think the plot will take? May we suppose this is an adaptation of a novel? Why this intrigant secrecy around this movie? Have you already taken the decision whether you will watch it when releasing on threathers or at home? I open a discussion about Hayao Miyazaki's last masterpiece!
