Disclaimer: This essay is pure speculation & is also my personal interpretation of said character. There contains spoilers for the anime AND manga below, you have been warned (references to other pieces of media will be coded as a spoiler)! From interviews, Hideaki Anno has encouraged the audience to come to their own interpretations of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, so everyone’s opinion is valuable. With all of that said: let us begin! Kaworu Nagisa is a polarizing character among the Evangelion community, perspectives range from him being the human embodiment of ‘perfect evil’ to others claiming that he is a benevolent representation of ‘unconditional love.’ After my latest viewing of the series & films, my opinion leans more toward the former idea: that Kaworu is a harbinger of death & destruction. But, if you believe that I’m correct with my assertions on Kaworu’s true nature, it will depend on what you define as ‘evil.’ NOTE: The manga is considered in canon, I know that some have disputed that fact, but not only is Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (the creator of the manga, as well as the character designer for Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV), Death & Rebirth, & The End of Evangelion) a former member of GAINAX, but the manga was also (allegedly) green-lit in a coalition between Hideaki Anno & King Records—before Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) aired on TV (link). It was released beforehand, as supplemental material for the series. If you’re familiar with my other essays, I’m going to have each part separated into sections & labeled, so that my ideas don’t converge & get confusing. So, let’s dive in! PART 1: KAWORU’S MOTIVES I believe that Kaworu was aligned with SEELE & manipulated Shinji & Rei into initiating Third Impact, based on the judgement (as an inhuman entity) that humanity is better off as a hive-minded, single consciousness/being one with Adam (the supreme being); as opposed to an irrational, ego-driven ningen (人間). Kaworu manipulated Shinji to make him believe that he sacrificed his life in humanity’s interest―to then, make Shinji nihilistic & create a connection with Rei, so that she could realize that her life is meaningless & turn her against mankind (which she does in The End of Evangelion). *ningen: human. Here are a few examples of how Kaworu’s duplicity comes to light in the series & in the manga: 1. Kaworu looking off into the distance before he then turns to Shinji to say something. In Episode 24: The Last Cometh (最後のシ者), he does this three times. The first one is when he’s sitting on the angel statue, when he first meets Shinji, he speaks of the achievements of human culture, & then turns to Shinji to acknowledge him. The second time is in the 温泉 (onsen) scene, Kaworu notices how attached the mentally crippled Shinji has already grown to him in one day, comments on how man will always feel pain (while furrowing his brows), & then turns to Shinji to say that humans are fragile, while looking at him, says that Shinji is worthy of love, & then utters the phrase: 好きって (sukitte roughly translates to ‘I like you,’ it can be perceived as more affectionate than like). The third time, is when Kaworu has infiltrated NERV, he look at Adam & says that humans must rejoin with Adam, even if it means destroying humanity, then he says that he ‘understands now,’ before Shinji crashes in with Unit 01, & then he turns to him & says that he will die for humanity. Technically, this is true but not in a sense that Shinji & the rest of the humans think of as a ‘noble’ sacrifice. Kaworu’s intent is for all living things to ‘live on’ as one being. My interpretation of the looking forward, not making eye-contact, before facing Shinji is a directorial way to let the audience know what Kaworu’s personal thoughts are versus what he chooses to tell Shinji. *onsen: another word for a public bathing facility. 2. During Stage 57: ‘The Fifth Child’ (フィフス・チルドレン), a kitten attempts to follow Shinji home, Shinji says that he can’t keep the stray, & then Kaworu picks up the kitten & breaks its neck. This conveys a sense that Kaworu would choose death over suffering for the whole of mankind. In initial drafts of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime, Anno was originally going to have Kaworu carrying around a cat with him (link). This can mean one of two things correlating to my theory, first, that Kaworu carries around a cat in his arms because he views humans as creatures that are small & helpless, or two, it can be a representation of his duplicitous nature: cats typically have temperaments that express their best interests in mind, before caring or compassion—whereas dogs will blindly admonish affection on anyone & everyone. With that comparison, it extradites the theory of Kaworu unconditionally loving humans—why isn’t he portrayed with canine symbology, instead of feline imagery, if he truly loves humanity. Kaworu is more of a deceitful character that doubles as an inhuman observer, exactly like Kyūbē from Puella Magi Madoka★Magica. 3. In Stage 66: ‘Without Reaching Your Heart’ (心届かず), after Rei II self-destructs in Unit 00, Kaworu comments on how her heroic sacrifice was foolish. This indicates that Kaworu perceives the virtues of an individual as silly, yet again indicating that he would rather see all creatures as one in a sea of LCL. 4. Stage 67: ‘Twisted Night,’ brings more questions in being with Kaworu’s intent. Shinji has an asthma attack while Kaworu’s is staying with him, in his room, & Kaworu kisses him (mouth-on-mouth) to breathe air into his lungs? Shinji freaks out over the sudden onslaught of sexual intimacy & shoves Kaworu off of him. Kaworu then brings into question whether it’s so bad for human beings to be connected. This confuses Shinji & causes him to avoid Kaworu for the rest of the manga (until the confrontation that leads to Kaworu’s demise, in Stage 72). 5. Another red flag in Episode 24: The Last Cometh (最後のシ者), is that Misato feels weary of Kaworu & throughout the entire series, Misato has been immaculately perceptive of other people. NOTE: Hideaki Anno once said that Kaworu ‘was meant to be a character so lovable that Shinji would develop a complex over him.’ Many people on the internet, who think Kaworu’s intentions were pure, use that line to declare that Kaworu is canonically good. Being ‘lovable’ doesn’t make a person ‘virtuous’ though. A serial killer can be ‘lovable’ to other people. Paradoxically, a person who isn’t ‘lovable’ can also be, in turn, ‘virtuous’ (i.e. no one likes Mark but, on his days off, he volunteers to clean up litter & donates to the local humane society). PART 2: THE FACE SCREAMS LOUDER THAN THE MOUTH Kaworu murmurs beautiful words into our ears, but do his words match his body language. Let’s look at the list of examples to see: 1. Kaworu looks at Shinji with his brows knitted & a wide smile on his face. If you saw this face on a person, in real life, would you find it welcoming or menacing? 2. Kaworu smiles at Shinji with a shadow cloaking his eyes; in traditional cartoons, this is meant to show that a character has ill intent. 3. Kaworu menacingly grins while conversing with SEELE—does it seem that he opposes them, in favor of Shinji, with THAT facial expression. 4. A newly released, official figure of Kaworu has him with black angel wings, standing above a pool of blood. Hm. PART 3: KAWORU’S WISHES FOR A JUNGIAN COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS COMES TRUE IN THE END OF EVANGELION ROUTE *Carl Jung: a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who had a famous study on something he called the ‘collective unconscious,’ that referred to structures of the unconscious mind which are, hypothetically, shared among beings of the same species. In Episode 24: The Last Cometh (最後のシ者), Kaworu removes the last seal on humanity’s fate—by ensuring that Shinji Ikari & Rei Ayanami do exactly what he had intended them to do in The End of Evangelion. They were pawns in his game of chess that would ultimately end in humanity’s destruction. Despite popular interpretations of him, there are zero indicators that Kaworu chose to betray SEELE; instead, there are subtle hints that point to the contrary. 1. Many people think that Kaworu sacrifices his life because he believes in humanity to prevail. While that’s a beautiful idealism, Kaworu’s statement from earlier in that, that humans are incredibly fragile, directly contradicts that statement. Kaworu knew how much guilt & grief his death would bring to Shinji, that was the modus operandi all along. 2. In The End of Evangelion, the entry plugs that are inserted into the Mass Produced EVA Units say KAWORU on them. This indicates that there are possible body doubles of Kaworu, like there is with Rei. Kaworu’s only words to Rei is the statement that they are just alike. My theory is that Kaworu says that to her & specifically makes sure that she watches him die, in order for her to realize how disposable she is. This line of thought is somewhat reciprocated in Episode 25: Air (エア), when Rei questions why she even bothers living—if everyone around her only sees her as a tool. Her insecurities about whether she is viewed as a human being or as a mere utility are amplified in The End of Evangelion, when Gendo Ikari makes it clear that he only sees her as a means to an end. But, would Rei have ever come to this conclusion on her own, if Kaworu hadn’t sparked the thought, or would she had just followed Gendo’s order obediently? PART 5: THE QUESTION OF REBUILD’S VERSION OF KAWORU While, Kaworu’s malevolence seems more clear-cut in the television series & the films, it’s more ambivalent in The Rebuild of Evangelion whether he is supposed to be seen as a hero or a villain. My points in this section won’t be proof of Kaworu’s deceit as much as just a few open-ended questions for discussion, seeing as NONE of us really know what 3.0+1.0 will reveal. 1. Why does Kaworu beg for Shinji not to remove the spears of Cassius & Longinus? 2. What does Kaworu mean when he says, with chagrin written all over his face, that he had been ‘cast down to the thirteenth angel’? Does that mean that Gendo’s revised version of SEELE expected Kaworu to coerce Shinji into not wielding the spears? 3. What did Kaworu mean when he said that he would bring Shinji happiness? Is he speaking of human happiness or referring to a Jungian sense of collective being? PART 6: REFERENCES THAT KAWORU WAS BASED OFF OF & OTHER NOTE-WORTHY COMMENTS There have been a few novels & manga characters that reportedly ‘inspired’ the character of Kaworu Nagisa & those further insights might give fans a clearer picture of what GAINAX might have been going for. 1. Kaworu is based off of Ryou Asuka from Go Nagai’s famous manga, Devilman, & within the continuity of the original story Ryou’s role in the story was for him to disguise himself as Akira’s best friend, only to end up bringing calamity to the world—when it is revealed that he is actually Satan. 2. Interestingly enough, Kaworu has also been compared to Satan from the Mark Twain novel, The Mysterious Stranger. In this piece of literature, Satan appears in a village & proclaims that he is an angel. He claims to be able to foresee the future and informs the group of unfortunate events that will soon befall those they care about. The village boys don't believe Satan's claims until one of his predictions comes true. Satan proceeds to describe further tragedies that will befall their friends. The boys beg Satan to intercede. Satan agrees but operates under the technical definition of mercy. For instance, instead of a lingering death due to illness, Satan simply causes one of Theodor's friends to die immediately. In the village and in other places around the world where Satan transports them magically, the boys witness religious fanaticism, witch trials, burnings, hangings, deaths and mass hysteria. Finally, Satan vanishes with a brief explanation: "[T]here is no God, no universe, no human race, no earthly life, no heaven, no hell. It is all a dream—a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you. And you are but a thought—a vagrant thought, a useless thought, a homeless thought, wandering forlorn among the empty eternities!" 3. It has also been cited that Kaworu’s first name is based off of the character, Kaoru Genji (from The Tale of Genji). Kaoru Genji is notable for being the first anti-hero in fiction, the character has two iconic roles in the story, the first being that the woman Kaoru is in love with, Ukifune, is stolen from him by his friend, Niou. Ukifune—though it is speculated that Niou sexually assaulted her since he wore the disguise of Kaoru when the two consummated their love—ends up preferring Niou over Kaoru because she says that he is a more positive person & less complicated. The second note-worthy portion of Kaoru’s story, that is important in The Tale of Genji, is that Kaoru & his wife are both having affairs on each other; neither of them seem to care that the other is sleeping around. Note: To add insult to injury, Ukifune is a woman that Kaoru falls in love with—while married. 4. Additionally, Patrick Drazen's book—Anime Explosion! The What? Why? & Wow! Of Japanese Animation expresses the view that Kaworu's offer of apparent love for Shinji is a tactic that Kaworu as the last Angel used to disarm Shinji. PART 7: THE JESUS ALLEGORY As a promotion for its Anniversary Special Edition of Evangelion, ADV Films published a humorous bumper sticker which reads "KAWORU DIED FOR YOUR SINS" (カヲルはあなたの罪のために死んだ). I have seen many people interpret Kaworu Nagisa a ‘Christ’ figure throughout the years; in my opinion, he is antithetical to Jesus Christ. 1. Jesus Christ was slowly crucified & humiliated before he was finally killed. ⇉ Kaworu Nagisa’s death is the opposite of that, his death is quick & painless. 2. Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot during the Last Supper. ⇉ In the Neon Genesis Evangelion story, Kaworu betrays Shinji. Before the betrayal, Kaworu even makes physical contact with Shinji—he brushes his hand against him, during the 温泉 (onsen) scene—parallel to that instance, in the Bible, Judas kisses Jesus to sell him out (Kaworu kisses Shinji in the manga version). 3. In the Gospel of Luke 22:3 & the Gospel of John 13:27, it is suggested that Judas was possessed by Satan. ⇉ See (above) the earlier parallels that have been established between Kaworu & literary depictions of Satan. 4. According to Matthew 27:1–10, after learning that Jesus was to be crucified, Judas attempted to return the money he had been paid for his betrayal to the chief priests and committed suicide by hanging. ⇉ Kaworu’s sacrifice was a suicide because he asked Shinji to kill him―like Judas’ attempt to repent, Kaworu attempted to paint himself in a good light before his beheading. 5. The Book of Acts 1:18 quotes Peter as saying that Judas used the money to buy the field himself and, he "[fell] headlong... burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out." ⇉ In the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji is shown strangling Kaworu in a field before the realistic depiction of Unit 01 crushing him. Judas death of falling ‘headlong’ sounds strangely similar to Kaworu’s head literally falling. 6. Judas's betrayal is seen as setting in motion the events that led to Jesus's crucifixion and resurrection, which, according to traditional Christian theology, brought salvation to humanity. The Gnostic Gospel of Judas—rejected by the mainstream Church as heretical—praises Judas for his role in triggering humanity's salvation and exalts Judas as the best of the apostles. ⇉ Remember the ‘crucifixion’ of Unit 01 before Third Impact. Allegorically, it is up to Shinji to lead humanity to salvation. 7. Iscariot is a word derived from an Aramaic word meaning "red color." ⇉ Kaworu has red eyes. 8. Iscariot is also derived from a kind of Greek-Aramaic hybrid: אִסְכַּרְיוּתָא, Iskarioutha, "chokiness" or "constriction." ⇉ Perhaps the scene of Shinji strangling Kaworu, in the manga, is referencing this. 9. The evangelist comments in John 12:5–6 that Judas spoke fine words about giving money to the poor, but the reality was "not that he cared for the poor, but [that] he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it." ⇉ Another possible parallel to Kaworu speaking pretty words, but only seeking a conclusion that would reunite him with Adam. Adam in Neon Genesis Evangelion is a reference to the supreme Cabalistic being, Adam Kadmon (אָדָם קַדְמוֹן). PART 8: CONCLUSION In conclusion, I don’t have any heavy-handed opinions on whether what Kaworu Nagisa decided to do was right or wrong. I believe that causing the apocalypse & merging the souls of all human being is what I would define as evil, sinister at the very least—as well as the betrayal, lies, & deceit—but perhaps Shinji rebooting humanity was for the best. It’s hard to say at this moment. I hope that Hideaki Anno will clarify that aspect of the story in the last installation of Rebuild of Evangelion—it will be 2020 after all (get it—20/20)! (ง ˙˘˙ )ว NOTE: I have seen many people chalking up critiques toward Kaworu Nagisa as ‘homophobic’ or that only ‘cis/white/males’ think Kaworu is evil. That’s not true at all—I’m a female who’s part of the LGBTQI+ community (sorry, I don’t like publicly sharing my sexual orientation on the internet). To give additional context to the Shinji & Kaworu pairing being egregiously non-canonical, Hideaki Anno explicitly stated that Shinji does not feel ‘carnal’ feelings for Kaworu (link). |

Catalano said: Oh no, you again with your conspiracy theories. Well, it's not fair to abide to a single interpretation, everybody's theory can be correct, anime isn't math. I'll read it and I'll give my thoughts which will probably be opposed to yours but it's fun this way. It’s fun to speculate. I anticipate your response, though this one isn’t as much of a conspiracy theory, even the EvaGeeks website believes that Kaworu is bad & they’re composed of some of the most diehard EVA fans. |

ok, I read it, as to my thoughts, You should not mix manga and anime just when it looks good to your theory, in this case you can say that several Kaworu scenes were omitted in the anime because they don't shook its world building/plot so much. But there are cases where the manga contradicts the anime: shinji fighing with asuka against the angels, asuka waking up from her coma and choking shinji, the last chapter and so on. Regarding kaworu, I always thought he is just like rei, he is the first angel, he has the soul of Adam, rei has Lilith, the red eye symbolizes that they are fake humans, it's a common anime trend (don't have a source but I remember something about it). I agree with you that kaworu wanted instrumentality but he's just SEELE's pawn just like rei is gendo's plaything, I mean pawn :)) He doesn't understand humans, just like rei, he was given a role so he went there, befriended shinji and then planned to merge with Adam, but in central dogma he discovered that there wasn't any Adam there but Lilith's body, so that's why he chose to die, his relationship with shinji became true and because he liked/loved him, he chose not to abide to seele or gendo, he let shinji decide for himself what he wants from life: instrumentality or real living. If he didn't care about shinji he would have merged with Lilith's body and nothing would gonna happen, kaworu was a poor soul manipulated by humans in order to achieve their plots, he's not evil. I can't comment on the rebuilds |

I can't comment on the rebuilds ⇉ Your point about separating the anime & manga is fair, though it still is canon; & with the wormhole that The End of Evangelion opened up (different timelines/dimensions), the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga might have been after Third Impact. ⇉ I never saw the way Kaworu treated Shinji as like or love, it came off to me as someone taking advantage of a person who doesn’t feel loved. When Kaworu said, ‘Death is the only real freedom there is,’ it seemed that he was baiting Shinji into initiating Third Impact. What if it was SEELE’s plot all along to use Shinji as a catalyst to initiate Third Impact, breaking his will with Kaworu (it appeared in the film that EVA 01 was needed to complete the ritual)? It never even clarifies what would happen if Kaworu merged with Lilith’s body instead of Rei, perhaps she was the ideal vessel. ⇉ While Rei was a pawn, she also allowed herself to be used because she loved Gendo. Kaworu is the same. He let SEELE use him because he believed that Instrumentality was the best path for humanity. Nothing in the way he acted around Shinji appeared as if he had suddenly become ‘good.’ ⇉ I know you dismissed the red eyes comparison, but what about the other parallels to Judas? |

You miss understand what I said, of course Kaworu wanted instrumentality because he was "created" solely for that, he didn't knew any better, calling him evil and taking advantage of shinji sounds too cruel. Seele plotted to use unit 1 only after they they realised that gendo betrayed them, which is after kaworu dies. You say we don't know what would happen if lilith's body and adam's soul merge, but I can tell you straight that nothing (of importance) would happen (an explosion just like the 2nd impact when the scientists tried to combine adam with a human dna), they are incompatible, kaworu was surprised when he saw the body, gendo was: just as planned. In this video there's a fan made explanation of eva but not a fan theory, they just explain the timeline of events citing official materials Kaworu chose to die in order to let shinji decide for himself, shinji was his "salvation", he learned about humanity and stuff, he's just that bad guy that does a good deed at the end and then dies and we have to feel for him because bla bla bla. Remembers me of Souther form Hokuto no Ken, he killed and destroyed yet he did all that because he loved his master, and then dies, of course he was evil but he was a gentle soul who had a breakdown. Kaworu had an epiphany at the end just like that sinner on the cross who went to heaven after he confessed his sins to jesus and he was forgiven. But no! you have to make kaworu bad, evil mastermind, just as planned I won't bother talking about the judas parallels, so what, even misato has 80% of them in common with dem paralells. |

Regarding Kaoru killing the kitten, I've seen few anime and manga where gay characters looking like him commit some cruel acts because of repressed love for a character. I am not sure if this specific act would fit in that category Eg Dream Hunter Rem had a similar scene or the more known Kaze to KI no Uta. Just mentioning it. Kaoru also arrived at a time when the school class was empty and most students had left or died. This allowed him to be more manipulative towards Shinji who had not any other person to lean for support. Had they sent him earlier, with his psionic powers he could have killed all the other students and future pilots on the spot and he showed signs of wanting to do it but he would lose Shinji's trust. I consider him an evil character and I'd say he is like Gendo, just supporting the opposite side. Difference is that Gendo is worse because he manipulates his own flesh and blood. So I'd give Kaoru also the victim role and excuse too. Gendo on the other hand never nurtured Rei to be like Kaoru. He made her an obedient child but allowed her to have free will to some extent. |

I respect your opinion but I still feel like the character of Kaworu is too ambiguous to say for sure whether he was a product of choice or design. I believe that Kaworu knew what effects his death would have on Shinji & Rei. He refers to humanity as ‘you humans’ before death, to me, that doesn’t seem like he completely empathized with the human race. His last speech seemed like part manipulation, part condescension. |

petran79 said: Regarding Kaoru killing the kitten, I've seen few anime and manga where gay characters looking like him commit some cruel acts because of repressed love for a character. I am of the same mind, it’s not a coincidence that Kaworu ‘happened’ to appear when Shinji was most vulnerable. |

I am pretty sure that Kaworu was simply manipulated by Seele. Kaworu didn't even know that the one in Terminal Dogma was Lilith. Of course other Angels "knew" this, that is the only reason why they all attacked Tokyo-2, and of course Seele also knew this because they were ones who started all this conspiracy. But Kaworu didn't have Angel's instinct, and Seele just lied to him for whatever reason. |

But Kaworu didn't have Angel's instinct, and Seele just lied to him for whatever reason. Kaworu appeared to know that Lilith was in Terminal Dogma, hence he knew exactly what AT Fields were, knew that humanity was fated to rejoin with Adam (he mentioned this in his monologue after he sees Lilith), it makes zero sense that every other Angel would instinctually know that Lilith was in Terminal Dogma (except for Kaworu), & his ‘epiphany’ isn’t upon discovering Lilith, but upon coming to an understanding about human beings (quote from Episode 24, right before Unit 01 barges into Terminal Dogma, ‘I see. I understand the Lilim now.’), my interpretation of that scene is that he comes to an understanding of how to appear sympathetic to Shinji (in order to begin Instrumentality). There is no indication that Kaworu is unaware of the truth, nor is it evident that he wasn’t complying with SEELE of his own volition. |
