Hm, felt kinda early for deep backstory like this. I'm trying not to pass judgement too quickly on such a highly regarded series, but these first 3 episodes have been pretty slow, and heavy with the themes. I hope I don't feel like I'm being preached at in every episode xP

This anime is very emotional <3

The show does seem pretty interesting though, and the fact that it's so ridiculously highly rated gives me hope.

Sometimes the most powerful are the unexpected ones, and they have been through so much.

They took their time to work on Ed and Al's backstory, as well as Winry's backstory with her parents' death. Good job so far.

I really enjoyed this episode. A big ass flashback of the Elric brothers' childhood, the loss of their mom and their attempt at human transmutation. It's kind of hard to not compare the two anime since this is the first time I'm watching 'em together. This series was definitely slower, I do remember that.

But that doesn't mean it's at a snail's pace. I get a good understanding of their bond with their mom, Trisha and get a nice introduction of Roy displaying his bad assery without saying or doing much

i can't believe they burned their house, guess they wanted to throw away their past.

Was there any need though to burn down their house? It almost looks like they did it in order to not be able change their minds later

Good episode! Not much action but it did a great job to bring more depth to the bond between the brothers and their mother as well as Ed's issues with his father. I also liked the progression from failing the transmutation, getting new hope from Roy, then having the painful operation and the training afterwards to work towards their new goal. Too bad something similar is largely missing in the first episodes of BH. Would've been nice...

One thing I don't agree with is that Winry's backstory about her parents death was that much better here. I saw many people in the BH thread complain about it stating that it was well done here but we only see them in one scene and the next scene they are already dead. Does not make me feel for them or Winry too much since it's too little to get emotional over it IMO.

Thought a lot of things were interesting e.g. the process of human transmutation and some sad substories and the state alchemists all in all an episode worthy of a 7 out of 10 if i'm gonna be completely honest.

Pretty epic flashback episode and it's quite interesting how much they are hyping up the one and only hohenheim.

way more focused than fmab, much prefer this type of pace

tried the dub for this one, ed's voice is way better but i prefer the sub for literally everyone else, might switch back

2022 rewatch
this entire episode was pretty much more backstory in the elric brothers as well as winry. damn this is just way too good. and that soundtrack is perfect as well. i always found it interesting that one of the songs there is sung in russian. i love it though, it fits perfectly even though amestris is more so based in germany. anyways amazing backstory episode!

Chapter 3 is better in all aspects than Chapters 1 and 2. The scene with the burning of the house perfectly concludes the tragic prologue of the brothers' lives.
