I'm curious.
I think it's a little creepy but it doesn't scare me.

It's a great example of what the RPG2000 engine is capable of, but otherwise extremely over hyped and relies too much on the fanbase in order to make an understanding of the game. All in all it's a very boring game if you aren't affected by the atmosphere and creep factor.

If I do like one thing about it, it's some of the music.

Thank you. I've been wanting to find this game again ever since I watched a playthrough of it so many years ago, but I couldn't remember the title.

I got really annoyed with the game not having a sprint function. I heard there was a bike effect? Whatever though, couldn't find it.

Game felt incomplete but that's just pointing out the obvious.

The only opinion I have on the game is that the soundtrack is stellar.

Its creepy a bit but feels really repetitive wandering around. Took me few days to beat.

There is a glitch in the game that makes it so you can walk at an unusually fast speed that involves the desk in her room but i forgot exactly what it was.

i shall revive this thread from the dead
i really love this game and everything about it pretty much. i find it to be very comforting, and every experience i have with it always really powerful. i love exploring the world, and the atmosphere it creates is great. all of the music is really fitting to every area and world it's played, and i think it's all composed very well, has this perfect repetition to it. i listen to the ost sometimes, most of it is pretty relaxing and is very nice and ambient. i never feel bored of it, because i'm never trying to beat it, i'm just trying to explore it, and discover and learn more about the world. it means a lot to me personally, and it always has a really strong effect on me whenever i play it

I overall enjoyed it though. I like the vibe and characters and some of the music and I liked the pixel art.

hmm, you get a pass this time... i think it's a better experience if you play it over a longer period of time, but hindsight is 20/20 and all

It's not really a game, it's an experience. If you "play" it like a game you'll probably be disappointed.

yea pretty much this, really helps to view it like that. i stopped playing it pretty quickly when i just viewed it as some weird horror walking simulator. changed how i perceived it, viewed it more as something to experience, and then i'd just sort of bask in the surrealness of the game, and it's atmosphere, and just want to explore the world as in-depth as possible and try to understand it more and learn more about it, learn more about madotsuki too, rather than to play, and it became much more interesting and engrossing. this is a long, and kind of nonsensical rant probably, but i think it mostly comes down to your perception of it all, and how you experience it personally
off topic, but same for irisu syndrome

Not really, Irisu Syndrome is a puzzle game and is a lot more straight forward. Yume Nikki doesn't really have "gameplay" to it, it's about exploring and trying to understand what's going on.

i guess it is more straightforward in that manner, yea, but i was also trying to understand the backstory and stuff too. but it has been a while since i've played irisu syndrome, so i guess that comment should be taken pretty lightly. i just wanted to comment on your profile picture really

Nah the backstory is also pretty straightforward and it's not hard to understand. Metsu spells it out for you. In Yume Nikki... yeah.
And yes, cute profile picture because Irisu is cute, thank you!

Nah, I didn't like yume nikki that much. Actually found it to be pretty annoying and boring most of the time. But I like what it stands for, or for how original it was at the time.
I'd not really recommend anybody to play it in 2019, especially since yume 2kki and .flow are a thing now and are honestly more worthwhile experiences compared to the original game. Maybe 2kki can't really top the nikki when it comes to story, since 2kki has no story, but I'd say that .flow does what yume nikki did, but better, starting from the environment design, to the fact that the game itself is actually scary, as it has a central theme, whereas yume nikki is basically composed mostly of random location with random abuse-related stuff thrown in it.

But yeah, back at yume nikki - great game for its time, didn't age well at all, but still somehow had, and still has, a big impact on modern videogame storytelling. Ultimately tho, the game was considered pretty lazy with its world design even back in the day, to the point where most people stopped as soon as they hit 2 hours. The horror part is also very faint, but at least there are some interesting things to see in the game.
Also, don't play the 2018 remake since it literally kills what made the original game known in the first place.

It is my favourite game of all time. It's one of the few games that really resonates with me on a level I can't fully articulate. I just love everything about it, from the characters, the worlds, the music, the moods it creates, and how it communicates such strong emotions, using basically no dialogue, and nothing but limited graphics and music.

I think it will be really special to me for a long time.

I hate it. The atmosphere is cool and all, but figuring out where to go and what to do is a nightmare. Slow gameplay doesn't help.

Played it on and off several times over the lasr 12(?)-ish years, along with some other indie J-horror games from that period (Ib, Ao Oni, The Witch's House). It is okay, I've played around with both the speed modifier glitch and walk through walls glitch. Beat it maybe once.
