There's a brief bit of Gabriel DropOut that deals with this theme. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind has a definite environmentalist theme to it, which involves some animals. It is a fantasy setting, but the themes shine through nevertheless. |

| Kemono no Souja Erin. Although the animals involved are fantasy creatures. But while they're more fantastical than real creatures, they are not as magical as their peers in other fantasy literature so it kinda works like what you are asking. |

| Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna https://myanimelist.net/anime/812/Chikyuu_Shoujo_Arjuna?q=ARJUNA It's not really about animals. This anime is about preserving the environment where we live in. There are some real life scenes here and there (i don't remember if it's just in the ending though, it's been a while already), but everything is mixed with fantasy. I'm not gonna lie, there are some parts that are boring, but it's not a bad anime at all and the last 4 episodes are really good IMO. |
