All of the versions I've seen out so far are 4:3, I assume some decent networks will be airing it in 16:9 in the next few weeks, but I'd appreciate if anybody can point out 16:9 releases when they appear.

I was wondering exactly the same thing. What's the point of airing in 4:3 nowadays? sigh...

Just wait a week or so and you'll get the WS releases. It's how it works, was like that with Clannad, IIRC.

Yes, thus why I said broadcast crop. It's happened with numerous series over the years. xxxHolic, Clannad, Hidamari Sketch etc. The first (few) broadcasts are 4:3 crops then there's usually a proper 16:9 broadcast later (though in some cases, just have to wait for DVDs).

It's going to be a long wait then. There's no way I'm watching it cropped.

Yeah. Resolution doesn't add anything to show's quality. If it's good, it will be good in any resolution, and if it's crap - it will be crap even on a blu-ray release.

They're not talking about resolution, it's the aspect ratio. The 4:3 broadcast is missing about 30% of the frame because the sides have been cut off = you're not getting the whole frame = you're not seeing the entire show.

I think I need to wait those 3 weeks as well. Fuck.

Not really, a lot of stuff has been 16:9 for longer than that.

And as kuroshiroi said, it's not the AR that is the concern; I have hundreds of 4:3 series. The fact it's cropped from the original production is the issue. I seriously doubt Kyoani made it in 4:3, so it's almost certainly a crop. I want to see the show as it was made, not as some stupid TV networks want to broadcast it for whatever idiotic reasons they choose to do 4:3 crops.

This is madness.

dtshyk said there is a slight chance that MBS will air it in the proper ratio starting from April 9th. Don't get your hopes too high though.

Then wait just like you did with Clannad. I watched After Story with 4:3. I'll just rewatch it when it's all ready.

For now I'll watch the cropped one since I'll be picking what series to watch as it's released. I'm only limited up to 2-4 series depending on the genre.

Considering nearly all, if not all, monitors of any decent size and resolution these days are in 16:9, it's amazingly stupid that it is broadcasted in this SQUARE that's completely distracting and crappy in quality.

If it doesn't bother you then raise your standards, it's 2009.

"On TBS, in order to adjust size, most 16:9 anime is cropped on the left and right. But on BS-i, they are broadcasted in their original form." - Wikipedia

Luckily, K-ON! airs on both! So hopefully we'll be able to see it soon, although I have no idea what date it plays. Maybe that's why not many subbers have picked this up yet, waiting for 16:9? Just guessing here.

Kinda funny retarded how [Aasasubs - Raster Project] K-ON! - 01 [1280x720 - H264].mp4 is just a 4:3 format stretched to 1280x720 >_<

Edit: According to ANN, it airs on BS-i starting 2009-04-25

I usually HATE to watch anime in bad quality. But I don't give a shit about this show so I'll probably watch it in 4:3 till I get bored and hold it for a couple of months, and then finish it in HD. :P

And my! BS-i airs it on the 25th! Hopefully someone will sub those as soon as they come out.

I've been watching Clannad After Story solely on 16:9 releases however I ended up getting things spoiled... so decided its probably best just to suck it up and watch the 4:3 version xD

LOL - I found that pretty funny, how did they think they'd get away with that.

Hmm, I was a tad annoyed when I saw K-ON! was in the non Widescreen format, but after seeing the resolutions of non-WS & WS side by side for Clannad, I'm pretty annoyed they're cutting bits off for whatever reason =\

Besides, Coalguys said this, so I'll watch from 4:3 & the 16:9, since I have no willpower:

You aren't the only one. If anything I hate how many networks, in the United States anyway, so quickly abandoned 4:3 when penetration of 16:9 widescreen television in the United States is still fairly low. It's annoying having everything cut off on every channel.

I was so glad when I finally got a new tv.

You think those two things are unrelated? /conspiracy :)

The main reason me and everybody else loves 16:9 is because it's closer to our fov so we can fit more TV in our vision = more K-ON! to see.

I echo this along with kevo's image link a few posts above in case there really is some confusion on what the thread's topic means.

The word 'resolution' is incorrectly (or at least misleadingly) used to refer to aspect ratio. I and most others here certainly don't mind a little bit of blurriness or compression artifacts in our anime*, but we care very much about part of the viewable area of the screen being missing. ^^;

*Those who do care are the ones downloading the 1080p releases (should someone release them; generally 720p is pretty much the typical high standard).

1920x1200... check. What is your point exactly? Were you blind to the blurring, tearing and general washed out picture as a whole? What does that have to do with resolution?
