Happy or sad, it has to be executed well. All the better if it's personally impactful. Favourites include Code Geass, FMA 2003, End of Evangelion, Anohana, Gurren Lagann, and plenty others.

I think this goes without saying, but the tone of the ending needs to stay true to the show itself more than anything else. If I just had to choose one though, I prefer mostly sad endings, although I'd rather it not be a complete downer, everybody died for nothing type of end. Ideally it would be 70-90% sad and 30-10% happy/hopeful.

Some anime endings just leave you there hanging some times its neither sad or happy it just end but i have to say i like it either way i like happy endings in romance anime and i kind of like sad endings in actions or fighting anime but all i care about is if its not bad

Well i think fullmetal alchemist is an interesting example of this. Fma 2003 has a very bittersweet ending but its more interesting because you wonder what will happen to the characters. Brotherhood had a happy ending and while satisfying to some, its not that interesting.

I guess in the end if a show is to have a happy or sad ending it needs a reason. It can`t be sad just for the sake of it.

I prefer happy endings because people fuck up sad endings too much.

With the exception of stuff like Clannad: AS which did it correctly, making it sad but soooo damn satisfying.

I like happy endings. Yeah yeah, it's been done over and over and over again, but I'm just a very sensitive person and I'll just mope around for the next few hours if the ending is sad... :(

Even so, if a sad ending was the best possible ending, then I'll accept it. Even if it means crying myself to sleep.
Anime fan since 2005. Well, it was more like a Cardcaptor Sakura fan. Shucks, that was all in the past. I've changed.

Sad endings, because you know it ended. With happy ones, you know that isn't true and the story will go on without you seeing it.

Usually you'd think that sad endings give a plot that is overall better developed and more complex, but in anime, sad endings usually give off the wrong impression of trying to hard to be grandiose, as seen in Death Note.

Therefore, in anime, I usually like happy endings, unless a sad ending makes the plot more realistic; but who, besides elitists, cares about realistic endings and the such anyways? Happy endings forever~

Sad endings usually help to finish a series off well where as the happy ending is merely confirmation of a good series for me.

Mm usually prefer happy endings but some sad endings are more impressionable and can make amazing animes and turn out to be favorites. Like for me that would be something like Guilty Crown.

Not saying that I prefer sad ending over the other, but I think it's a little harder to forget something that ends with a pinch in the heart. It leaves more impact to the readers/viewers, and the greater the impact, the more memorable it becomes. Still, it is depending on the execution if the end result will either be nicely or poorly written.

That said, I think that a good blending of bitter and sweet moments in a finale makes the story a bit more remarkable to me.

That's so hard to say because both can be great but I'd have to go with happy because a sad ending will leave you depressed.

Bittersweet endings, which should be happy but give you that internal pain (ex. angel beats ending)

Depends on the series. In Clannad After Story, for example

If an anime has a sad ending just for the sake of having a sad ending/shock value/there's no other way to end it, then it irritates me. If an anime has a happy ending that doesn't make sense and/or feels very abrupt (I'm looking at you, Soul Eater. Even though it's my favorite the ending just bugged me.) then that will irritate me as well.
Always the hate for ending in Clannad AS sigh

This. Some shows deserve sad endings, others deserve happy ones. And some deserve bittersweet ones (neither truly happy or truly sad).

probably a happy ending. i don't tend to typically watch moody sad anime - when i do though they make the ending bittersweet and that's not my cup of tea.

I'm all for sadness and tragedy but I generally like it when the series ends happily after all the tragedy is done or at least ends with some sort of silver lining in the end like in

Depends on the quality, if its well done then I have nothing to complain about whether happy or sad ending. But I prefer happy endings in romances, but I'd like to see a few sad ones too since they are greatly lacking...

I prefer happy endings, although a sad ending is cool if done right

If a sad ending is done just for shock value, then that is just stupid and ruins the whole anime for me lol

I prefer a good ending like Katanagatari, Cowboy Bebop, Kara no Kyoukai, Gunbuster/Diebuster, Hanasaku Iroha... I don't like bad, forced, stupid endings like Angel Beats, Clannad AS, Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai, Durarara, Ano Hana, Zero no Tsukaima... But doesn't really matter if it's happy or sad. I like to be fully satisfied.

It depends. Of course, growing attached to the characters, we want them to have an happy ending. However, in some situations, it would just seem out of context to have an happy ending. Sometimes, they are just too cheesy and this is annoying me (like Angel Beats for example, the anime was fine, but the ending only made it bad).

They are forced good endings, but same for sad endings I guess. There is the cliche "bad ending not to do an happy ending" that sometimes come out of the blue.

I think it depend of the anime overall.

I think it depends on the anime. I usually prefer happy endings but the sad or ambiguous ones are those that I can't forget that easily and make me consider some stuff. But either way the ending should be done well with no plot holes or rush.

I like sad endings because it make romance shippers rage, hopefully Nagi No Asukara and Golden Time have sad endings. Lol

Seriously, I would have a happy ending.
