I believe Inukashi is a boy, based on my own observations from the various works of No.6 (anime, manga & novels) but I've been wondering this for a while now and wanted to know what others thought.

What do you think?

A male clearly, if you can read the subtext. It was hinted at throughout the show.

Drawn like a girl in anime, but in manga\novel it may be different. Also, in anime there is a scene when it's hinted that it may be a boy. But it's still ambiguous.
I believe the author means to leave the matter to reader's choice.

I haven't read the manga yet but I saw somewhere Inukashi was referred as a he..but from the information throughout the anime alone, I think Inukashi is male.
There are subtle hints throughout and on ep 9 Rikiga says ''There's no difference if it's a boy or a girl when they're that young'' and Shion asks ''Wait..are you..?'' when touching Inukashi's shoulders. For me that was the ep I realised he was male XD Up to that point I was under the impression Inukashi was just a tomboy..it was then I also realised he uses -ore- referring to himself, a pronoun used by males.

Even in the anime adaption I'm pretty sure it was hinted towards a male.
Fooled me at the start when we got to know him though.

Dogkeeper read as very non-binary to me. Possibly a trans boy? In japanese, they never really use ANY gendered pronouns for dogkeeper. The English subtitles uses he/him, but only very very sparingly.

I agree.
But I think Inuhashi might be a tomboy too.

in the light novel inukashi is a boy. at least the english translation uses male pronouns, i just checked!

i read the light novel after i watched the anime though and i remember being confused. in my opinion the anime did such a good job at implying that inukashi could be a girl, but hides her gender on purpose because life as a girl would be more dangerous.

it may be my headcanon only, but some thoughts about it:
dogkeepers panic in the rapey scene gets another dimension if dogkeeper is in fact a girl. imagine not only being afraid of being touched/raped but also not wanting to reveal your secret gender. dogkeeper lives such a cautious life and trusts nobody with such an intimate topic, not even shion and nezumi are ever supposed to find out ;__;
also, if you try to hide your gender to be safe, live most of your life among dogs instead of humans, maybe perceive yourself as more of a dog than a human, you probably ruled out ever being a mother. but when „she“ has to take care of the baby, dogkeeper does show a lot of warm new sides - maybe motherly instincts kicking in? the way inukashi is taking care of the dogs in general has a very motherly vibe to it as well.
dogkeeper’s character would definitely make sense this way and it would make quite the bittersweet tragic story, very fitting for the tone of no.6 in my opinion!

i have to add that the no.6 anime did a great job in giving us no clear answer!
it doesn‘t matter to anybody in the no.6 world so we have to live with „not knowing for sure“ as well as accept dogkeeper’s life for what it is.
gotta love and respect no.6 for these kinds of details!

Ok so I’m pretty sure Inukashi was assigned female at birth but they are either non-binary or male.
