Other than food, shelter, clothes or even money, what do you treat as "necessities?"

For me, one would be music. Music soothes the soul and makes me feel various emotions. Sometimes, I can't even concentrate without listening to music. It calms my state of mind, yet it can also pump my system in times of need.

When it comes down to it, none of these things are necessities. You're thrown out into an unknown country with nothin but $400. Do you buy food or an iPod? The answer is clear every single time.

The cheapest phone I can find (minute phone). 2 Slushy from a Quick Trip (smallest cup), 2 hot dog, and stay at a motel for 2 nights until someone comes to pick me up from this unknown country.

Thats how you bargain.

I doubt any of you guys even know how to dial an international number lol. And you can't just presume phones are capable of calling any country, or that they have accessible gps info for the other party.

And dankickyou... iPods are not phones...

In any case, anyone who thinks the internet is a necessity, or music, are..... sheltered?

I don't have any intentions of being rude or questioning if you should be calling people sheltered, but iPod Touches are capable of having phone capabilities via apps.

So what exactly are you trying to say here? Sheltered seems like kind of a sly word to use because it's not exactly a negative thing per se. But I kind of feel like you wanted it to mean that on the down low whilst still being able to remove any intention of negative connotations if you really had to. Obviously you felt it was important enough to point out that people who love things like music more than anything else are 'sheltered'.

So might I ask what the right answers to the question of necessities would be that would deem one 'not sheltered'? Food, water, and clothing? Most of us here aren't living in third world countries and we don't have to apologize for that so we don't need to list such obvious things (cause really, of course in a logical sense they would be necessities). Or perhaps you were just gonna go with 'love' is the only 'non-sheltered' answer. If so, how adorable! :)

Maybe the people who 'need' music are actually artists who live eat sleep and breathe it and live a fullfilled life? Maybe in their own sense they have accomplished more than you have katsucats? And experienced more than you have. So if then how is it that they are 'sheltered' for loving music so much that they feel like they 'need' it? For one thing, music often leads to social gatherings and meeting new people who also love music.

The fact that you put quotes around 'need' proves my point. No matter what country you're from, internet and music are not necessities, and neither is love. I don't need to take anything back. There's a difference between a need and a want, and it's sad that most people can't tell the difference.

You make a logical point that many people stand by but what I'm saying is perhaps the definition of necessity can evolve over time or be changed in certain contexts. We're talking about needing things in a modern context within our own personal environments where we already most likely have our next meals and a place to sleep available to us. Of course it would be different if we were starving... but we're not.

For example in my own instance, maybe I don't need to play sports. But if I didn't need it how come when I lost that ability it's negatively effected me mentally ever since? And I could easily argue that mental stability is something a person needs. When we lose something that we love it hurts. So perhaps we do need it, or else we'll be in pain or emotional instability. Such can be said for people who love music, and books, and other materialistic things (or not, perhaps they love a person and need that person). Once you lose it sure you might survive but it doesn't mean the loss of it can't hurt you and effect your mentality for the rest of your life.

after reading some old replies i think Katsucats may think that education especially higher education is just a want and not a need am i right? since we can all go back to being hunter and gatherers

so i can see why other people think that needs are evolving too, in the near future the internet may become one of the basic needs too since it provides knowledge (news/education) and the internet may become one of the human rights too namely the right to information lol

when people say basic need, they refer to what they'd take to go live in a cave through a storm. they need food, water, and shelter from the elements....nobody's going to bring a mathematics textbook with them.
