First thread since Mellow 4 Mod. Whoop. Summer classes started, and I'm bored as hell. Probably don't have time for LoL so I guess I'm back on MAL!

Now with the thread. Not sure how this thread'll go so I'll condense it.

=====================

So I've just been wondering a quickie question. If you had the choice of living happy, but your entire living was a lie, would you choose to do it?

Examples:
  • Hitman (hired assassin) living with his oblivious family.
  • Closet pedophile that adopted a child and no one is aware what could happen.
  • A completely different personality than what you truly are to everyone (including close company).
  • A dream job of deceiving people for your own happiness.

Oh, and to verify, answer the question before you're living it. Of course you're going to be fine with it after you've made the choice to live the lie. I'm talking before.

Soo apparently CommanderJenny left MAL. Lol. Made a spew of threads then suddenly decides to great. Just dandy. Oh, and in other news, I'm bored! Have fun wasting your time reading this text. Blah blah that's it for now. I'm fucking hungry and too poor to solve it.

Me too. If living a lie would fix this, I'm sold, and the details don't matter.

I wonder what the rest of MAL will say. This thread has some potential for entertainment.

No.

I believe religion is a lie, yet it obviously makes some people happy.

Perhaps it would make me happy too, but I will not ignore what I believe to be the truth for the mere sake of happiness.

If im living happily (i.e im feeling happy) why would i care if it was a lie?

Do you mean if i'd be guaranteed good living conditions but had to lie for them?

I might not be following your question correctly, but here goes...

I guess it depends on who I'm affecting. If I genuinely know the people that I might be screwing over by living this lie, say your first example "Hitman (hired assassin) living with his oblivious family" than no I wouldn't want to lie to only have myself be happy.

If I knew I was screwing over people, but had no idea who I was screwing over then yeah I wouldn't mind if it meant I could be happy. Pretty fucked up way to think, but it's honest and I think most people would too. I doubt I'll ever be in a position to do this anyways.

And whatever makes you happy. If you live the lie, lie for the happiness, or the entire thing is a sham, then yes.

I guess I would, I think it would be quite endearing to have a second life. And if the stress wouldn't be to much, and if I indeed would be happy. Why the fuck not?

or.... something like that.

That could be interpreted to be pretty "deep".

The capital letters are just for emphasis. I actually forgot to capitalize the Wasted Time part. =(

Taking his question so literally for comedic effect is rater comedic (durrrr), but I do not think I'd ever sacrifice truth for happiness. Can you say the same?

I don't want to live a lie, at least not in this sense. It's hard to keep a secret about yourself away from others. Its nice not to hide things.

Now if you mean if I would live in a Matrix or choose reality, I think that's a tough one, but I'd choose reality that is harsh rather then living the lie of the Matrix.

I believe lies are necessary. Sometimes we do it subconsciously. Rationalizing about an outcome when it really had nothing to do with your own efforts can be a lie, for example.

Though to accept lies as necessary or living with a lie is easier said than done. But what if you know for sure the person/people don't wish to hear it? It will undeniably destroy your relationships, destroy stability (on more macro relationships than just with people alone) just because your naivety thought it was a good idea to be honest. And where can honesty get you? Alone. Fired. Depressed. For starters. Not to say that honesty is bad, but again, there should be a balance. Nobody likes someone who lies often either.

Election days tell me otherwise, especially the last one.

But I will agree that lies are necessary. One truth that is for certain is that some people just can't handle the truth.

How can you live a lie and be happy?
Usually only those in denial or those who have some sort of altered state of mind are living a lie and, even then, it's only a lie to those looking in from the outside.
To the person who is 'living a lie' that lie is their truth.

Conforming to your own ideals about what is true and what isn't. That's when I think you'll be happy.

I guess that's true. Though I think people didn't think they were lies. Or they just thought the guy was likeable, not whatever policies they said they were going to do. When they discover lies, as they usually do, it's usually game over. But hey, the masses are not quite, that bright.

Happiness isn't worth more than truth to me. I would rather live a miserable life that is real, than a happy life that is fake. If the life is fake the happiness is fake anyway.

I think people love being lied to depending on the effect of the lie. Society wouldn't function the same if everyone were brutally honest. For more info, watch that 1 Kino no Tabi episode.
