THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The episode was over before I even knew it. It was like “What? That’s it?” They did very well Mio in terms of being entranced by her.

The visuals were indeed quite fascinating with Mio, due to them and her appearance it’s like you get sucked into a VN that goes by you as you were a ghost observing such as the following,

Whom caught me by surprise a lot not due to its meaning but of its presentation. Symbols being quite there among them solitude in darkness despite the many lights of students being around her.

Another nice presentation that was visual is in the spoiler
it showed how the times went rather well but also the visuals showed each season apart from showing that solitude enveloped Mio. THIS IS AMAZING! The entrancement level is OVER 9000. You get sucked into right away. This is surely amazing.

Another good example is the swan in the spoiler
the blue peace serenity and the swan being Mio most likely but VN KNOW IT! This is a key part of Mio’s arc and IMO with the BGM it was well done.

That certainly helped a lot when events in this episode happen concerning Mio herself. For example the meaning of her book at the end of the episode.

I was surprised by Kurugaya’s swimsuit thing in the spoiler
at the beginning from the looks of them shot it looks like service but then again her form pleased many I am sure like that. Must have been a pun axed on Kurugaya's hot body appeal thing. It looked like one big joke to me more than service around it despite the indications from the spoiler.

About thee end, the gang playing baseball was super fun to watch and them positions:

http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb480/Yumekichi11/Picture%2040/1354974851295_zps9b77dfc9.jpg
too! :D

About the preview, I will just leave these:
http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb480/Yumekichi11/Picture%2040/1354975013989_zps8aae59bd.jpg

http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb480/Yumekichi11/Picture%2040/1354975025406_zpsbeb28db2.jpg
and I see Rin in cat mode already looking much more MOE than before. To look forward to. Mainly due to Komari being funny, Noumi being too MOE and most of all the gang looking like they have seen a ghost or are test braving themselves into something. Regardless of that, the comedy/MOE is bound to be back!

Well yes it finished airing and yes a little from Kurugaya and posted some in the spoiler but yeah it was more a laughing stock segment than service but you can look at it from different perspective. I got a laugh from it and that's all.

Damn this episode had some good things going for it today! The OST used at 8:31 was the biggest highlight of this episode to me. ^^ Her scenes from the common route were very well adapted too, not precisely, but the changes were well enough for the anime format.

Kurugaya had a couple funny moments too. Love how she always ends up surprising Riki!

Next episode is test of courage. Can't wait. :D

The "puni~ puni~" part at the start was so moe~! Those black "biker" pants the girls wear for baseball is so attractive, lol.

I like the use of "未使用曲3" from the OST, when Riki was talking to Mio starting from 8:31. Finally she has more screentime in the "Common Route".

LOL, Masato always talking about his muscles xD

I sort of like the choice of OST tracks they used in this episode, especially with Mio.

Next episode looks like the "test of courage" part.

Wooot! After last week we get a really good episode again ^_^ and dat preview, looks like next weeks animation will be good too! :D When Kyousuke smiled, it was awesome! :D

Back on this episode, Mio is so cute ^_^ her voice fits so well there's not that much of an impact for changing voice actresses.

When Kurugaya told Kud and Komari to go after Rin, so funny ^_^ her character is developing quite nicely :D

All of those visuals, beautiful! I especially liked the cherry-blossoms (though I just finished Chihaya's route in Rewrite before watching this xD)

10/10, hope it stays this good :D

This is my first time saying this since this anime aired, but...

...I was BITTERLY disappointed with this episode. It's probably because Mio is by far my favourite heroine, and her introduction in the VN made such a great impression on me (surpassing Nagisa, and that's quite a feat), but honestly, I feel that they made all the wrong decisions in this episode.

Firstly, "Approaching Light" played only once. Come on, this piece DEFINES Mio, far more than I would say any of the other themes do for the other heroines. It was so disappointing for me to not hear it play during the 2nd and 3rd meetings with Mio. Also, the anime Mio speaks faster than the VN Mio from what I can hear.

Secondly, the book mystery scene was done terribly. Mio is supposed to be on the verge of tears, and I remember her voice being so close to breaking even as she says it's okay. That part was much much more emotional in the VN and I am sorely disappointed with the anime version. Also, having Kurugaya solve the mystery was utter trash. What the hell?! You were supposed to do it yourself by asssuming good intentions. Kurugaya is just a placeholder if you don't go on the Mio route. Also, why the hell wasn't Approaching Light playing during this scene? I remember in the VN, after so many encounters with Mio and not really knowing whether she hated me or not, for once I saw her smile (there was even a CG), and nothing like that had ever felt so rewarding. Even so early in the VN, her saying "thank you" while still on the verge of tears was very emotional.

Thirdly, Mio's "recruitment" into the team was WAY too rushed and felt NOTHING like it did in the VN. I understand they have to fit everything into one episode, but the mood was completely different...

Overall, I have to say that I set the bar VERY high for Mio's episode, and I was very disappointed. I understand some of JC's decisions, but honestly I felt that the director didn't really care much for Mio. Maybe it's just me, but the Mio events in the anime give off a mere shadow of their VN counterparts. I remember how touched I was by Mio's events, and immediately wanted to do her route first, but I don't see Mio being very popular with anime audiences. I really thought JC did an excellent job with Haruka's intro (the others were solid as well), but it seems like they grabbed some emotional development from Mio and shoved it into Haruka.

...I'm very sad...

(Note: I don't think this episode is terrible from an absolute point of view, but I honestly think that a VN Mio beginning playthrough would actually be more effective).

On a much more positive note, though, next week is test of courage! This should be good for a bit of fun.

im not gonna be too picky about the episode.

props to the VA for overall staying somewhat true to her character, although original Mio sounded MUCH more refined while this one kind of just sounds like nagato.
i liked some of the symbolism shown. albeit even through the MS paint + gradient tool sky.

as sleepingentity has stated "approaching light" should have been used at least twice. or played for a longer duration.

the book finding scene was quite rushed tbh. Mio told riki to stop looking for the book right when he began searching. they were supposed to look for it together for a while first. and that resolution was a buzzkill.

unused track is pissing me off

jc stop with that weird fan service... it's weird. i'm already tired of seeing shiny spandex butts

http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb480/Yumekichi11/Picture%2040/1354974482630_zps28be0030.jpg
rather strange angles like this.

Yeah I agree with you but money corrupts sadly. Still there is effort in not showing it a lot or minimize as they say. One of the best examples is how they made it bad or almost not to notice panties of Rin when she got a boost jump. That was obvious and the studio might be pressured from finances and all but still does not want to do it.

Kick notion before I forget:
Noumi = dog
Rin = cat
Mio = bird?

Well no shit you were disappointed, it's J.C. Staff. With the previous nine episodes you should've known they'd screw everything up. Just watch as they destroy Refrain when they get to it.

But no, it's so much easier to crap on J.C. Staff because it would be INHUMANE to treat Key like that. I don't think the fanservice was all that bad either. Granted, it might be a bit more heavy than the other adaptions, but it's still not that bad. =/ But think of it this way: More fanservice = better sales = higher budget for this series in the future! :D

I wouldn't say they screwed it up. It may not have been as great when comparing it to the source, but from an anime point of view, I thought it was still enjoyable. If you're a hardcore fan of Nishizono from the VN, odds are you're not going to like it, but I wouldn't say that this intro adaption was anything less than decent. And hell, if you really want to re-experience the full glory of what's being adapted, just play the VN. Animation will only make it a little more enjoyable so you really aren't missing a lot.

Calm down, bro. I loved the previous 9 episodes, and this epsiode wasn't bad, it just was bad compared to the VN, which was friggin' great.

I don't care about others. Approaching Light is hands down the best, most fitting heroine theme I have ever heard. Hell, play it in every single scene with Mio. Even if others complain, I would be super happy.

Oh dear once they adapt that, it will be the insanity around but knowing the studio good luck with anything other than your average blanks and asses pretty much and no there will be no more than that. Well IMO of knowing what the studio offers in service from its series.

I agree with Kenshin's saying of the market strategy in terms of sales with service cause they will never change that for sure. Once something makes you money do you change it?

Generations change but this is not the thread for this and yeah studio wise it was a factor of the service and yeah the generation of animes changed. Go back in the 90s and do you see stuff like now in them? Exactly my point it's not.

Man TBH I wish LB was not ecchi or like Clannad but it's sadly the studio so like I don't know about anyone but I STFU on the ecchi and enjoy the shit I want in this series to enjoy like I mention the MOE, the character expressions, the setups, the gags and many more.

To be fair, the VN itself has its fair share of fanservice. I mean, it's not exactly JC's fault that LB has a much more lighthearted humour aspect to it.

This is a good introduction to Mio for the Anime. The only thing I don't like about this episode was how Kurugaya just appeared and solved Mio's case. I think it was a very forced event. It would have been better if only Riki can figure out the solution.

Yeah, VN Mio introduction is better, but anime Mio introduction also fits perfectly. Imagine if you don't know anything about the VN, you will still find Mio interesting and mysterious here. The last heroine + her line about asking her again sometime (why she is always under her parasol). There's a great mystery in her that will make you want to look forward more. The episode was not that boring although not also entertaining like the past episodes (which is OK since the main point of this ep is to introduce, not to entertain)

I'm looking forward to Mio's route at the future eps. I hope JC staff can do it better than Komari's arc. (don't get me wrong, I liked Komari's arc, my fave episode is 6 although it looks rushed).

I don't think JC staff screwed up here. It was an OK episode.
This was also the opinion of my friend who never read the VN.

Edit: also, I think it's ok to hear approaching light just once this episode. We still have her arc to replay that bgm. Anime only viewers will not mind this.

Her introduction was less boring in the anime than in the game. It's my opinion. Throughout the game, I guess Mio was the character I found more boring (though I still like her a lot), but I believe the anime will adapt her route in a way less boring way.

10 episodes and only Komari route has been done. A 2nd season for Refrain is mandatory. I mean, they won't be, in any way, able to do Refrain in 2 episodes.

Also, how well is LB! going to sell in Blurays? It scares me that the sales might be a failure... Any ranking for this Fall animes' Bluray sales? Hope LB! makes it to top 5, at least.

Very much so, yes. I understand that this isn't what would be considered an ideal adaption, but I'm still enjoying the hell out of it. Still has the same fantastic cast, the music we've all come to know and love is there, and the story resemblance is still fairly strong so there can still be a great appeal to the fans of the VN. Just my experience alone with the game has made it to where I value this series more than any other that is currently airing.

It has an outside chance of making the top 5. Its not going to sell as well as any other Key adaption, but its still on pace to be a hit by any other standard. It should make them plenty of money especially with the low budget it has.

Whether or not it makes the top 5 will depend pretty much entirely on how many fans ordered at Gamers brick&mortar stores, which has had all volumes of LB in its top 10 since LB was solicited. It seems to have the exclusive bonuses that all the otaku want.
