I am attracted to anime/manga because of my personality and not the other way around, so nothing about me changed because of it. Well, one of my friends really loves pairing characters, and her enthusiasm for it rubbed off on me to an extent, but I wouldn't call that a change in personality.

I don't really see why anime/manga would affect somebody in some special way that other good stories don't. Maybe you experienced a change in personality because you started hanging out with more people with similar interests and gained social confidence? Whatever the reason, sounds like you're happy, so I'm happy for you.

At the beginning anime made me love Japan and give me this nerdy image of Japan where everything is happy and about anime and kawaii desu. I wanted crazy colored super long hair and twin-tails and purple eyes and I started dreaming about alternative realities and everything was kawaii desu. On online communities I used to call everything super kawaii and all my friends were a part of my kawaii family. Pocky and ramen was the real shit and I'd vote on Hello Kitty for president.

Eventually (fortunately!) I grew out of that phase.

TL;DR
It doesn't affect me. Anymore.

Also, when you call yourself an otaku, do you actually know what it really means? Just curious.

yeah, I know that if you call yourself, or anyone for that matter, an otaku in japan it's a huge insult but as for here in America, the majority of anime fans that I know seem to refer to themselves as otaku so until a different term for it comes along, that's what I use for lack of a better word.

Something very similar has been done before: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=52136

Also, you're not an otaku. The correct pronunciation would be 'you are otaku'. It's a common misconception that it's a status, while in fact it's a psychological disorder in which an individual is an unhealthy fan of something. That's why you say someone is otaku, not an otaku. Having that said, it should now be evident it's not something to be proud of, either.

Hey I'm 17 and I watch anime, I'd say that the percentage of people I know who watch anime and stuff ..are about 2% :(
Well the point of this topic is that I need you to answer some questions to see where I fit...
How often do you watch anime/ read manga ? ( considering the spare time you have)
Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people) ? Or do you just have friends that resemble you? (those who watch anime...)
If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?
If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..?

I would appreciate if you were my age.. to make a better comparison :)

I watch anime for three to four hours a day.
To answer your other questions:
I have friends at school and I hang out with them sometimes. I used to be outside a lot, but lately it's just been so boring.
I see no reason to stop doing something I enjoy.
If I stopped watching anime, I would simply compensate by playing more games.
Also, I am 19.

Well I'm 16, and I just quit anime like a month ago. Anyhoot..

I read manga whenever there's a new release of something I'm reading.
Sometimes I'll find something new and get hooked - these are one-offs however.
Anime? Well, initially I watched them the moment I found them and downloaded them.
Just before quitting, I was getting to a stage where I had to push them off until the weekend, watch them Friday nights, Saturday mornings and Sunday mornings.

Do I have a social life? Yes, quite a healthy one. I chill out with people at least once a fortnight on an outting or something whilst school is on - so I sort of hang out with people quite alot out of school. I'm in the loop of things, go to parties and such.
I'm the only dude I know in real life that has watched this many anime titles and remained somewhat sociable with others. Some I've met who've watched >150 titles, were weeaboos or talked about nothing but anime (BORING + AWKWARD).

I've only suffered of momentary addiction - like when I initially picked up a manga like.. Ichigo 100% for instance. I wish I didn't get these types of things, it really stuffs schedules up..

And me quitting anime - has it done much for me and my social life? No. I kept anime in good balance. Nothing has changed since I've dropped anime; except for the fact I've increased my study time by ALOT.
I don't let stuff like anime affect my time with friends.

Some extra things to note:
-When I was up to date with /a/, my social life seemed to slump
-When I gamed competitively, I went out with friends ALOT less.

I watch anime whenever I can, which can range from 8 hours a day to one episode every 4 days at the moment, it depends who wants to see me and what we arrange.

I have a very active social life with a wide range of people, including people who do politics, film production, sociology, psychology and history as their degrees. A few of my friends like anime but you wouldn't know that unless they told you, like me. We're not nerdy to look at or talk to and we don't go round shouting about how much we love anime. My non-anime friends are fine with me liking it, as I read manga around them sometimes and let them listen to Japanese music if they want to (although they never like it and joke about how weird a manga book's layout is).

If I wasn't addicted to anime then I'd be addicted to something else, because my personality doesn't allow me to like something in moderation or to go without an obsession. Also if I stopped then I as a person wouldn't change at all, because anime doesn't define me (although it used to).

And I'm 19 as well, a first year in university.

Didn't we have enough of this stupid threads about anime and supposed social life? Why does every new teenage user that decides to start a post makes threads like this?

First get over yourself!! Some silly poll answers in an Internet forum ain't gonna solve your personal problems so in reality you are just making a thread for personal attention so you can speak about yourself by the excuse of comparing it to others.
You are just a teenager seeking attention. Not a crime but at least be honest to yourself.

Second anime and manga have NOTHING to do with your or anyone's else social life. If you don't have any friends or you never go anywhere is because ether you aren't good in those things or that's how you chose to be and has nothing to do with pass time activities like anime and manga. If anime disappeared you wouldn't become the soul of the party the next day so stop bullshitting yourself.
Also the number of your friends that watch anime or manga is irrelevant because guess what? YOU DON'T ALWAYS HAVE TO SPEAK ABOUT MANGA/ANIME WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH!!! Do you really have nothing else to find interesting in a person than if they are also anime/manga fans?

How often do you watch anime/read manga?:
Not actually very often D; It's mostly because I'm so picky. Sometimes only 2 episodes per week, when the anime I'm caught up to update *hangs head in shame*.

Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people)? Or do you just have friends that resemble you? (those who watch anime...): Not a very active one ^///^ I have two good friends, one of them watches anime. I do get invited to other things, like parties, but I'm not interested.

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?No never! D:

If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..? I doubt it. I don't think correlation implies causation in terms of interest in anime vs. crappy social life :)

I'm 21, but I used to be 17 once as well.

Back then, I was in school, lived with my parents and was single so obviously I had a lot of free time.
I spent most (read; all) of that free time watching anime and playing video games. Didn’t study much.
I guess I was very lucky though, as all of my friends shared my interests. So indeed I had a social life, even though the people I was socializing with were mostly creepy anime-watchers, like myself.
You could say I was somewhat of an addict. I wasn’t really doing anything else.

I think what saved my life from otakuism was a club (-kind of) for people interested in anime/manga, games and Japan in general. I used to go there once or twice a week, and made a lot of friends.

Today I have a full-time job, my own apartment and a lovely girlfriend (whom I also met at said club).
But far too little free time.
I hardly ever find an opportunity to watch anime anymore (I thought I’d keep it up for years to come!). I don’t go much to that club either, sadly. My friends though, they’re still at it. And nagging at me to watch series and play games more often.

If anything, I’d say my social life went somewhat downhill since I started watching less anime.

Nevertheless, I am happy with my life.
Good luck with yours.

I'm 18, nearly 19. I watch at least an episode of one anime each day, because I don't often have much free time on weekdays.

I'm part of my Uni's Anime & Manga Club, I meet friends I've made at said club outside of club meetings and I go to conventions and shop for anime and manga at my local retail stores. It's not that hard to like anime and manga and have some sort of a social life if you put in that little bit of extra effort.

Getting laid isn't all that hard either.

I watch/read anime/manga almost everyday.

I still have a social life, but recently I've been staying inside just because I'm lazy (plus weather is retarded here).

I don't hang around with a lot of people who watch anime or read manga because for some reason they're crazy otakus who are absolutely obsessed with it lol.

Recently though I've found out my friend's younger brother and his friend watch anime too. I've been talking to them quite a bit about anime now (no I'm not a pedophile...). I have a variety of friends I talk with, but I usually hang out with "thugs". They don't watch anime - maybe as a kid they did.

I'm addicted to anime and I do see the world differently than when I did not watch anime, but I do not wish to stop. I've got way more life changing problems to deal with.

I'm suffering from chronic depression, but I can still get girls if I wanted to. ;)

-haha, I mainly have people that resemble me, somewhat actually even they think I'm weird. I just talk to mostly my one best friend occasionaly everyone else since most of the kids at my school are into Hetalia fans and kpop fans, which I'm not.

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?

-probably not considering a number of other factors in my life.

I'm 22 so kinda out of your age range, but I remember 17 pretty well. Back when I was in high school I knew loads of people into anime/manga of all demographics. Granted, my high school/town has a huge geek/nerd/non-jock prep population. Even still today, my high school is known for its musical theater, marching band, and debate team over any sports. Anyway because of that, I had a lot of friends in hs who were into anime/manga and many of those still remain my closest friends today. In college, its been a lot less, really just me and my girlfriend are into it.

So regarding being obsessed, I'm weird, I'm not always into anime/manga, I do this thing where I cycle through my interests. So I'll like obsess over something and then get bored of it and move on to the next thing. So currently I'm obsessed with manga and I'm reading it whenever I get the chance, which at the moment is pretty often since I have no work to do (being a college senior is great). But before this current wave of obsession, the last time I read a manga was like a year and a half ago. So even though I've been into manga for like 9 years its never been constant. But when I am into it, I'm completely obsessed.

Regardless of my obsession, it doesn't have a huge effect on my social life. After hs, I've met more and more people who aren't into this stuff at all, and I know not to talk about it around them, since they aren't interested. I wouldn't ever stop reading the stuff to 'better' myself because its my interest and I could care less what others think about it.

How often do you watch anime/ read manga ? i would say depending on the day (with work and school) about two hours a day

Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people) ? Or do you just have friends that resemble you? i have a good number of friends that don't watch anime, so i just don't talk about anime around them, unless they ask about it or something along that nature.

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ? I wouldn't say addicted or obsessed, i just like anime and don't like tv. Imo most tv shows are uninteresting, so i don't watch them.

If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..? No i wouldn't. I am terrible at socialsing with people because most people don't like what i like. But I'm

I keep hearing this on MAL, and it's such a vague answer. Go out where? Where to find similar interests? It sounds like if you just leave your home you'll find friends or something.

Most of the people I come to know was by school or by networking (ie knowing someone who know someone else). I never did this vague "going out" thing and just found some people to hang out.

I'll watch anime or read manga whenever I feel like it, which is usually daily. As for my social life, it's decent enough. I talk a lot at school and I hang out with my friends pretty regularly. I don't consider myself addicted to anime/manga, it's just a normal hobby. If I stopped watching anime/manga that still wouldn't make me want to be more social than I already am. Oh yeah, and I'm 16.

How often do you watch anime/ read manga ? I watch anime almost every night, for about 2 or more episodes.

Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people) ? Or do you just have friends that resemble you? (those who watch anime...) I have multiple kinds of people as my friends, but it seems that there are a lot of people in my school who enjoy anime to an extent, so yes quite a bit of my friends have watched anime, but not on a regular basis. (For example, only watching anime once every few months)

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ? No, its something I enjoy and its not like its hurting anybody.

If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..? Probably not, I am not the best at socializing but its good enough to make friends and get my point across.

I don't think liking anime/manga would have so much of a severe effect on you that your entire social life changes. Imo theres a lot of other worse things you could get into in highschool that could affect you detrimentally. Also, its not like I pick my friends on whether they enjoy anime or whatever I'm into or not, I pick them based on how much I feel I can trust them and if theyre just the kind of people I'd enjoy hanging out with or not. It's just kind of an added bonus that they'd enjoy the same things I do (in this case anime).
By the way, I'm 16.

All in all, anime/manga has little to no effect on my social life, except the fact of how the opinion that others have on me does change once they figure out I am into anime. Other than slightly altered outlooks, my life is fine. I do hear rumors and bad things about me but it doesn't stop me from being who I am and I continue living life. The people who have time talking shit about others (the real trolls) are the ones who don't have a life, even if they are athletes or beautiful/talented people.

Yupyup, I like to keep anime and socializing in a healthy balance. Although I wouldn't consider myself a complete introvert, I enjoy my time and hobbies alone most of the time (since none of my friends really share my interests except for sports and [some] music). I don't see any reason to allow anime or any other hobby for that matter to take over a person's life. Moderation is the best way to go.

I watch anime/read manga pretty much 2 to 4 hours a day unless I really get into a series, then it'll escalate pretty quickly. I know tons of people. Most of whom don't know much about anime or manga or don't watch it at all, but generally I talk more to those who do. My best friends and I watch anime all the time, but we generally like to socialize with many people.

Really, anime and manga don't affect my social life much other than that. I do meet new people because of it every now and then, but that's about it.

Me watching anime has actually no effect on my social life; rather, the other way around, my social life has an effect on my watching anime. To elaborate...

I have social anxiety (long story, but pretty much irrelevant to anime/manga), so I'm reluctant to spend much time socializing if I don't need to. To be honest, I don't put much effort into my social life. Thus, I have more free time to myself. Thus, I spend said free time watching anime, and doing other important stuff. My life's probably somewhat comparable to Satou's from "Welcome to the NHK!" after discovering anime, in a way. Well, minus the lolicon and other explicit stuff.

It's just a hobby in the end, nowhere near an addiction, though if I start watching a series, I'm inclined to want to continue it, to see how it ends. Music's probably more of an addiction, but that's where I kind of place my purpose in life, so I'm not exactly inclined to give that up.

How often do you watch anime/ read manga ?
It's pretty variable. I went years without seeing anime and now I'm seeing it several, several hours a week. In a few weeks that might change, too, it really just depends.

Do you have a Social life?
Not much of one. I do what I have to do, and usually, that's all. Occasionally if an old friend is in town I might hang out and play video games or something.

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?
If I could finish the series I'm currently watching or see how they end, I might be fine. Just don't make me stop playing music.

If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..?
No. Anime/manga has no influence on my socializing. My shortcomings in socializing are psychologically complex. If anything, perhaps seeing Neon Genesis Evangelion, Welcome to the NHK, and other anime with unsociable main characters, helps me a bit with my low self-esteem ("I'm not the only one like this"), and thus, helps my socializing.

Watch Zoids CC in the morning before school, get home in the after new after computer club and would watch Toonami and then after that watch an anime DVD from Netflix (way before anyone actually knew about it.) then I would watch Adult Swim(back when it was nothing but anime) Now a days I watch anime rarely, depends on how shitty the new season is. But I read Manga everyday, I read a ton of actively scanlated manga so I read 1 to 3 new chapters a day but each chapter only takes me like 5 minutes to blow through.

Do you have a Social life? Or do you just have friends that resemble you?
At 17 all my friends watched anime, there was about 12 of use and we where always at someones house watching anime every Saturday. Now a days, none of my friends watch anime but I don't really care.

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?:
Why would I want to? doesn't bother anything and I'm not a raging weaboo who makes sure everyone and their grandmother knows I like anime.

If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socializing..?:
Not really I would be pretty much the same.

How often do you watch anime/ read manga ? Atm i have no job LOL and i am studying not many hours so i spend most of my spare time when i am at home watching anime or reading manga around 60 percent excluding cleaning etc.

Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people)
Yeah i have a social life with all different kind of peoples i guess junkies, bitches to nerds i guess.
To be honest i have maybe 2 or 3 friends which watch anime/manga as extensively as i do and even then they don't even like the same anime as I.Which is really sad but i noticed that people who read anime/manga as i have are really weird and i don't get along with them LOL.

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?
No i wouldn't because i would redirect my energies to another unhealthy obsession =.=
If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..?
Anime hardly an affect on my social skills so no i would not be a better at socializing .

How often do you watch anime/ read manga ? ( considering the spare time you have)
I try to get an episode in a day at least. I can get up to about 25 on the weekends if I'm completely free, but I always have some problem set or project to do. Once I graduate I'll be in the Army so that will suck up a lot of my time.

Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people)?
Not too much of a social life, but that's because I want it that way.

Or do you just have friends that resemble you? (those who watch anime...)
No one near me watches anime seriously like I do. A few gundam fans but nothing beyond that.

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop?
Never.

If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..?
No, liking anime has nothing to do with your socializing.

I'm 21 but when I was 17 I didn't watch too much anime (rarely watched any) and I still was reclusive. I can still be social if I want to be but I choose not to.

1-3 hours dayly, varies depending on the day.

Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people) ? Or do you just have friends that resemble you? (those who watch anime...)
I do often socialize(classes, parties, etc), but -real- friends I only got a few and most of them watch anime as well.

If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?
Hell no. I ain't no weaboo that neglects everything for anime, so no worries there.

If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..?
I hardly doubt it. I've always been bad at it, so anime or not I ain't socializing any better.

Thanks very much, so you all agree on the fact that anime and socialising are 2 seperate things ..and most of you have "close" friends who watch animes...

Psh no. Lets see, Black Clothing, Leather Jacket, Combat Boots, Singer in Metal band. Voted to be the most silent person in school (my school talks a lot that and I don't care about other ppl's real life problems and convos). Scared a couple of freshmen, (apparently my friends say I have the talent for a natural 'Death Stare'. That and I friggin' hate people

It's almost more of a hobby for me now than an addiction, so anywhere from 1 to 4 episodes on weekdays, more on weekends. The rest of my free time I spend on the Internet looking for things to amuse me.
Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people) ? Or do you just have friends that resemble you? (those who watch anime...)
I have only one friend who watches anime, and that friend doesn't watch as much as I do. The rest of my friends are semi-nerds, like me, so we relate with things besides anime.
If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?
Sometimes I think I'd want to stop - it feels like I should be doing something more productive with my life, even reading would be "better". But then, I love finding that one rare, epic anime. And I don't think I'll be going back to normal TV programs anytime soon - it doesn't feel like they compare.
If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..?
Naaaaah. I like Interwebs socializing - especially on this site. Before I came here, I felt like I was alone in my love of anime. Nice to find other addicts out there too.

All in all, I think anime's worth it. I could be spending my time more productively, but hey, you're only young once. I'll enjoy my teenager-dom while I can! (BTW, I'm 18.. almost. 3 days. XD )

I am 20 years old.
How often do you watch anime/ read manga ?
I watch like 4+ hours a day. I injured my knee so I ca not do much of anything else, not like much has changed though.
Do you have a Social life (with all kinds of people) ? Or do you just have friends that resemble you? (those who watch anime...)
I have many friends who do not watch anime, but I do not see them too much because of school and some work. I am not a very sociable person and I am content with that.
If you're addicted to anime/manga, would you like to stop ?
I have not reason to stop, there is nothing else that I enjoy.
If you could stop, will you be a "better" person socialising..?
I doubt stopping would help, I have social anxiety.
