I just finished watching Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari tonight starring Tenchi's half brother Kenshi and absolutely loved it.

I was looking into watching some of Tenchi Muyo afterwards as I remembered seeing some of it in the past. Trouble is there is so much of it here on MAL that I have no idea of the order they are supposed to be watched in.

A little help on what order they should be watched in would be awesome.

Cheers guys.

By order of release date:
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki
Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special
Tenchi Universe
Tenchi in Tokyo
Tenchi Muyo! GXP

The first two are ova's Original video animation if you want you could just start at Tenchi Universe and you'll be fine.

Cheers mate, its hard to go back and touch on an old classic, especially one that doesn't have one that is simply called "Tenchi Muyo!" to start with lol.

I'll probably watch the OVA's unless of course the main points from them are covered at the start of Universe?

I have not seen this show, but just to be safe if you want to know everything about the series just start with the ova's but then again you do not have to everything from Tenchi Universe and down is enough in my opinion.

@Riptos

In regards to Tenchi, there are two different continuities, one is the OVA-verse and the other is from the TV series (Universe and Tokyo + movies. There is also the spinoff series for the character of Sasami where she is a magical girl. I would start off with OVA's 1 & 2, but in regards to the 3rd set, watch at your own discretion, not many people are fond of the 3rd OVA series (just as not many people are fond of the Tenchi in Tokyo series for the other continuity). The Tenchi GXP series follows the OVA continuity. For the Universe continuity, you start out with Tenchi Universe, then watch Tenchi Muyo! in Love (the first movie) followed by the other two movies and the Tokyo TV series. Each of the two continuities have aspects that are different from the other and you'll understand what I mean when you eventually watch it.

I have seen all the shows and movies. The one thing people have to remember is that there are at least three separate canons that don't really have anything to do with each other except for characters.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki There is a total of 20.5 episodes. The first 6 episodes are consider the first ova series, the 7th episode is considered a special of the first OVA series. OVA 2 series consists of episodes 8-13 and a 7 minute short following episode 13, this is considered 13a. OVA 3 series consists of episodes 14-19. OVA 3 Special Episode which I believe concludes the whole OVA series. All these OVAs were released over a 14 year period. So I could be wrong about that episode concluding the whole OVA series. If you go and buy this series I suggest reading the fine print to see how many episodes are actually in set. You don't want to buy what you think is the whole entire series and only got several episodes.
Galaxy Police Mihoshi Space Adventure. This is considered a spin off from the OVA,but the character Kiyone Makibi is not part of the Ryo-Ohki canon.
Tenchi Muyo! GXP .This series involves Tenchi's friend who somehow ends in the Galaxy police and some of the characters from the OVA series.
Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari a.k.a. Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar. This series takes place 15 years after GXP and involves Tenchi's little brother who got sucked into a alternate dimension. This story is very similar to the Familiar of Zero series.

Tenchi Universe. This series and films is loosely bases on the first 6 episodes of the first OVA.
Tenchi the Movie: Tenchi Muyo in Love .
Tenchi Forever! The Movie a.k.a Tenchi Muyo in Love 2 - Distant Memories The third movie made but it is still a sequel only to the first movie.

Tenchi The Movie 2 - The Daughter of Darkness. This film is not considered canon to any of the other films, ova or series.I would suggest watching it after the Tenchi Muyo Universe series and movies.

Tenchi in Tokyo . This series has no movie sequels or spin offs. This series is okay. Its not as good as Ryo-Ohki or Universe series. So if you wanted to you could watch this first and then watch the other series.

OVA 4 just wrapped up about a month ago and I was looking for the chronology of the original Tenchi series, so this is what I believe it is.

Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki (OVA 1) - 6 episodes + 1 bonus episode (7 episodes)

Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki (OVA 2) - 6 episodes + 1/2 bonus episode (6.5 episodes)

Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki (OVA 3) - 6 episodes + 1 bonus episode (7 episodes)

Tenchi Muyo GXP - episodes 1 through 15

Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki (OVA 4) - episodes 1 through 3

Tenchi Muyo GXP - episodes 16 through 26

Tenchi Muyo Ryo Ohki (OVA 4) - episode 4

Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar - 13 episodes

I'm streaming the Tenchi Muyo shows on Funimation..... I started with what they're calling "Tenchi Muyo OVA Series".... It's dated 1992..... I finished the 6th episode but when I started the 7th, the story was screwed up.... Should I watch the 1st 6 episodes of "Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki" before going back to finish the OVA Series? Sorry but I'm using Funimation's titles and dates..... They may be wrong.... I WISH FUNIMATION WOULD JUST PUT ALL THESE IN ORDER!!!!!!! So frustrated...... Thanks.....

I don't know what they call them on Funimation's list order, but the OVA continuity order goes:

OVA 1 series: https://myanimelist.net/anime/539/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki

OVA 1 special episode: https://myanimelist.net/anime/1146/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki__Omatsuri_Zenjitsu_no_Yoru

OVA 2 series: https://myanimelist.net/anime/540/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_2nd_Season

OVA 2 special episode: https://myanimelist.net/anime/10351/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_2nd_Season_Picture_Drama

OVA 3 series: https://myanimelist.net/anime/541/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_3rd_Season

OVA 3 special episode: https://myanimelist.net/anime/1147/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_3rd_Season__Tenchi_Seirou_naredo_Namitakashi

A note on the 3rd OVA series - GXP aired before OVA series 3 did, but OVA series 3 takes place before GXP chronologically. Going into OVA3, it seems expected that you would've watched GXP first anyway to be familiar with some of the characters (there's also some time travel screwery at the end of the 3rd OVA series that will be confusing if you're not familiar with the characters from GXP). I'm just listing them in chronological sequence with links to the MAL pages so you can get a better handle on which series is which.

GXP: https://myanimelist.net/anime/1133/Tenchi_Muyou_GXP
(A spin off focusing on one of Tenchi's friends who got recruited into the galaxy police by accident)

OVA 4 series: https://myanimelist.net/anime/31861/Tenchi_Muyou_Ryououki_4th_Season

See my previous post on where I think the episodes of the 4th OVA series fall chronologically.

War on Geminar: https://myanimelist.net/anime/5781/Isekai_no_Seikishi_Monogatari

I watched Universe first, then Ryo Ohki, but I would go with the original series, Ryo Ohki first, then Universe, then would watch Tenchi in Tokyo and GXP, which are more based on Ryo Ohki. Then maybe War on Geminar and finally Ai Tenchi Muyo. I also would wait and watch Pretty Sammy later too.

Ryo Ohki came first, then Universe, and since GXP and Tenchi in Tokyo are based on Ryo Ohki more than Universe, Ryo Ohki should be watched first. The last Tenchi series that I know of is Ai Tenchi Muyo, the most current version.
Also, the founder of the now defunct Tenchi Forum claimed that when he first watched Tenchi Muyo, that it changed his life. I wonder if anybody else's life was changed by watching Ryoko & Ayeka fight over Tenchi?
