Hayao Miyazaki, currently 67 years old, told reporters at the Venice International Film Festival that it will be at least another 3 years until his next project. He plans to get a younger generation of animators to help him.

Miyazaki also gave his support to the use of animation without the use of computers, stating that he will continue to use his pencil for as long as he can.

By the time his next project comes out, he will be over 70 years old.

fun to see someone who still does it old school style, since some people have taken it to far where it barley resembles anime anymore.

Well it's good to see he isn't done with anime yet, but at his age, I think this will likely be his last one. With three years, I'm sure it will be spectacular. Looking forward to it!!!

[wishful thinking]Makoto Shinkai, maybe?[/wishful thinking]

Well this should make for an interesting movie. At least now I have something to look forward to in three years.

I take icon requests.

I agree. The older anime series drawn by hand seem to have a different air about them than the newer ones. Maybe I'm just old school, but I miss them dearly.

At least Miyazaki is still considering making more anime and not just retiring.

I know what you mean, although I haven't watched any of the old anime series I'm using my knowledge from Disney movies. The new ones can't compare to the old ones, there's just some sort of charm that they're lacking.

Pencil > CGI, any day. I hope that people continue to make anime without the use of computers.

I'm back.

People like this only retire when they die. =p

Hopefully the 3 years of vacancy will be used as times for inspiration and fresh ideas and his next Piece will also be surprising and brilliant.

As reminder, his last Piece opened the Venice Festival and was immediatly considered the Master Piece of the Festival. The two commentators I heard said that it their travel was worth because of his movie. =)

Nice to see him take a stand against the computerization of animation. His word must carry a lot of weight, hopefully he'll make some people think twice before inserting CGI everywhere.

I am a little sad to hear that it'll be another 3 years (or more!) until his next project, but then again, I've yet to see many of his existing pieces, so I should not complain.

I agree that pencil > CGI but its just the fact that computers are so much cheaper to animate with, and take less time. But maybe someday people will realize that quality is better than quality. Follow Miyazaki's example.

I'm so happy he's still making movies though. Also, I'm happy he hasn't changed from using his pencil. His movies always are beautiful animation, and then when you think about all the work that goes into them it's just even more impressive.

I honestly don't care if pencil or computer is better (ie if it retains a 2d feel to it) it's the actual show that matters. I can see some stuff that would make good use of CGI though like the sci-fi and mecha genre or something but overall studios should keep the CGI to a min.
Well, how many today use the old style? At least at some percentage anyways?

Although 3 years is a long time to wait, I want Miyazaki to take his time. I know it'll be a masterpiece because of the past work he has done.

Well, three years isn't too long of a wait. I'm sure it will be worth the wait anyway. I'm glad that Miyazaki is still for the traditional arts. I know I definitely prefer it to the more CG generated stuff >.>

unfortunately its cost effective to use computers so eventually animators will all resort to that method fo animating. in a business where time is money, only those who see the esthetics and beauty of hand drawn anime can still stick to their guns bu tonly if they have the capital to support such work. in addition, Miyazaki commands the respect of his peers so he can afford to be stubborn. someday hand drawn anime/animation will be a thing of the past.....sad indeed.

I don't think Shinkai will have anything to do with Miyazaki and Ghibli at all. From what I've seen the person closest to person to 'the next Miyazaki' is Mamoru Hosoda (he was originally slated to direct Howl's anyway (but gave it up to work on Tokikake (oh the irony))).

i understand peoples attachment to hand drawn over rendered but from my point of view cg simply means that the top end anime is not as good but the more average ones see a increase in quality (fewer stills and obvious repeat frames in cg) but who am i to judge sence i'm a no talent hack when it comes to art

Look up to the top of the screen, and choose "People" from the drop down menu beside the Search button. Type in "Hayao Miyzaki" into the search text box and press the appropriate button.

Ta-dah.
