jisho is good, but sometimes it can't help when you're trying to find the meaning of Japanese expressions
in such cases, weblio does a good job at explaining the meaning

Hi, I'm new here. The following is just for your information. If you already know this, please just ignore me. It is about free computer translation services possibly better than Google.
(I posted this article to a different forum but is was not the topic for the forum to deal with, so I searched for a club about Japanese language to re-post it and found this club.)

Google can handle to translate between many European language but as for Japanese, its grammar and idiom analyzer seems a kind of alpha version and don't work well. There are some computer software makers specified to handle translating Japanese form/to English and some portal sites provide free computer translation service for more than ten years. They are specialized translators to deal with Japanese and English so that you usually get better (if not perfect) result than Google. As far as I know, there are at least two useful translators.

(1) http://www.excite.co.jp/world/
(2) http://translation.infoseek.ne.jp/

It is just my imagination but the first one has a more accurate grammar analyzer for Japanese and the second has a larger number of Japanese idiom database. Since Japanese writing system doesn't put white space between words, it may be very difficult for you to comprehend the grammatical structure of a Japanese text. The first translator may give you somewhat unnatural word-for-word translation but its grammar analyzer is more accurate than the others. I'm sure it would be good for you when you feel difficulty to analyze the grammatical structure when you try to read Japanese. On the hand, the second translator is good at finding Japanese idioms in a text.
So, I guess it would be a good idea for you to put the same Japanese text you are trying to understand into both two and compare the results. I hope these computer translators can help you to study Japanese.

By the way, you can use these service as dictionary, too.
