I'd like my mom to be more interested in anime, so I need some recs of series she could try. The only anime she ever liked was Cowboy Bebop. She really loved the movie Avatar(with the blue people XD), so maybe something similar to that?

With the things you rec please no nudity, and only mild violence(like no gore). And it must have an english dub, so doesn't like reading when she'd watching something.

Cowboy Bebop and Avatar?

Well, have you tried watching FMA with her? Outlaw Star would also be a good choice

You'll have to point out to your mom that Avatar is an American work, not an anime. But if I were you I'd see if she would watch Monster or Aria. If Funimation did the dubs, then pass it up.

these are all great series that fit your criteria. I don't know about whether not they have english dubs, but they are all extremely good and can be enjoyed by a more mature audience.

clannad and clannad after-story
Eve no Jikan
Honey and Clover
Samurai Champloo

Chi's Sweet Home & New Address. Cute cats, 3 minute episodes, feel good humour. Good all rounder for a family. I'm not aware of a dub but then there's not a lot of dialogue anyway.

Your best bet would be Studio Ghibli films though. Spirited Away, Naussica, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle etc. Very accessible movies, fantasy orientated and the English dubs are of largely high quality with some well known English and American actors on board.

Oh she knows, but I was just stating that she's okay with the otherworldy fantasy type of stuff.

Thanks everybody for the recs. :)

In order to avoid giving her the shock treatment, I'd say stick with some more mellow shows at first. Although since she likes Bebop, have her try Champloo.

So Ghibli films, Mushishi, Aria, Natsume Yuujinchou... I'm not sure all of these have dubs, but I know for sure Mushishi and ghibli do.

At any rate good luck

Clannad (1st and 2nd season)
Aria ( all the seasons)
Shugo Chara (again all the seasons)

All the anime that i wrote above are with nice art , no killing in them & nice story
There will allways be someone better than you, but that doesn't mean that you will defenetly lose to him!

Sister Princess (1st season has a dub)

Fanservice is low and cuteness is high (she'll be in cute overload from this anime as it tastes like diabetes)

I have listed some series and movies I think your mother might like. For the most part, they are a bit more mature in tone and not particularly “silly.” Many are series and movies I have rented from Netflix so I know they have dubs. I can no longer access my Anime Takeout list to double check dubs there.

Those not marked as dubbed are series I feel she may want to look at some point. Some of them may be dubbed but I can’t say for sure.

Perhaps the two of you should look up their synopses and reviews together.

* indicates one I think to be a sure winner.

You've got to be kidding. Like she wants to watch that with her mother . . . . .

I think most moms enjoy something intellectual and amazing. To start off someone who has never watched too much anime before, you should show them something breath taking and popular.
I would recommend Death Note. It has mystery in death, which connects to adult shows such as CSI, Law and Order, and Forensic Files (which my mom loves). Also, so much confusion in the anime of how he does all sorts of things will keep a mother on the edge of her seat.

You can also start her out with a fun, family anime movie (dubbed would be best). A movie I think a mom would find cute and enjoyable is Spirted Away. A movie I think a mom would find intriguing and fun is Summer Wars.

Or this.

Finally managing to reply... of course, lisnoire covered everything I wanted to mention, but I think moms would appreciate Seirei no Moribito more than most other anime, if they decide to watch a series. I do not know about dubs, but I think even with subs it is worth watching.

Other choices I would make would be Only Yesterday, Tokyo Godfathers (especially for Christmas), Summer Wars and Whisper of the Heart.

also inb4 like mother like daughter, doki doki haha musume lesson etc

My mom enjoyed shin chan. I don't know if that's a good suggestion because shin chan is such a funny bastard but she liked it. :P

Also, Magic Knight Rayearth. I don't know if it has english dub but I didn't know my mom got hooked on the story more than I did when I was a child.

If I were you, I would show her Eve no Jikan, but sadly I'm not sure whether it's got dubs or not.

I want to strongly rec Ghibli films, especially Princess Mononoke. Duno abt you guys, i got similar conservationist/environmentalist vibes from both avatar and Princess Mononoke.

Or she might like Ghost in the Shell. Maybe start with the movies first.

Just a question but why do you go watch anime with your mom? It's something I would not really do. Maybe it is because I am a guy.

My mom knows anime but she doesn't watch it. Sometimes she watches Pokemon along. Watching along is fine. But I will never go watch a whole season of Clannad, Aria with her for example. And deathnote? wtf?

Also it will limited what you can watch. You cannot watch any ecchi animes. So like recommended Studio Ghibli is a good choice. School days obviously NOT!!!!

And someone suggested English dubs?? well that makes sence I guess. But I can't stand them at all.

...in other words- i recommend studio ghibli works- especially the movies like grave of the fireflies and spirited away- i'd even go out of my way to say totoro-

I would DEFINITELY show her Howl's Moving Castle. This is a great choice, since my mom, who hates anime, liked it!
Then after that, show her Haibane Renmei.
That should get her interested.

How about Ouran High School, that's what I show to people new to anime. Also, Ghost Hunt, though it has mild horror, is very interesting for all ages. I'd also actually recommend Escaflowne and Rurouni Kenshin. Outside of your parameters, possibly: Moon wo Sagashite and Glass Mask (and Kagen no Tsuki manga, if you ever get to manga).
